2007 Outlook

Rather than let 2007 be his swan song, Horn has opted to leave the team with the most passing yards (4503) and end his career going to the team with the least passing yards (2371). If nothing else, there is room for improvement in Atlanta. The Falcons have never had a 1000 yard wide out since Vick started to play and in the last three years under Mora, no wideout has managed more than 611 receiving yards. Now Horn shows up at the age of 35 (36 in January) and there's little chance that the tide is turning just because Horn showed up.

The main role Horn is expected to fill is to mentor the wideouts in what an actual NFL-quality receiver is supposed to be like. No one on the roster currently knows. Horn will get playing time and may even start in this catch-starved offense but he hasn't played a full season since 2004 when he gutted out a groin injury all season long. He has the name but he's on the wrong team to end his career with a bang.

07-18-20 Update: Horn gets a minor bump up with the legal woes of Vick which calls into question who the starting quarterback will be this year in Atlanta. Horn is on the downside of his career and likely won't be a big contributor regardless who the quarterback is, but with the specter of Vick possibly missing time, it does help the wideouts here.

Recent Priority News

07/01/08
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports the Atlanta Falcons are not actively shopping WR Joe Horn for a possible trade, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff. Horn's agent has been cleared to talk with other teams, but currently there are no takers.
Huddle Up: As they say usually where there is smoke there is fire and Joe Horn's name has come up quite a few times recently. Even if the veteran wideout does remain with the Falcons fantasy teams will likely only be able to get point production out of Horn if there is an injury to projected starters Laurent Robinson or Roddy White. Also keep in mind that rookie Harry Douglas has looked good in mini-camp and could challenge for playing time in Atlanta this season also.

ESPNews reports Atlanta Falcons WR Joe Horn is receiving interest from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Huddle Up: Horn would be a nice acquisition for Dallas which is in need of a solid No. 2 wideout to play opposite Terrell Owens in the Cowboy offense. The Cowboys would likely make a deal soon for Horn who will need time to learn the offense but the veteran receiver would give the Cowboys a legitimate threat to make big plays now instead of in a few years when their younger receivers like Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin and Sam Hurd will come into their own. Watch the Huddle news wire for further developments.

05/13/08
According to media sources, WR Joe Horn has expressed an interest in being traded from the Atlanta Falcons. The 36-year old Horn still wants to contribute and start for an NFL team but has apparently lost his starting spot with the Falcons to WR Laurent Robinson. "I want to win a Super Bowl and I want to win a Super Bowl here in Atlanta, but I don't think I can help this team win a Super Bowl sitting on the bench, waiting for third down," Horn said.
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should expect Horn to move on to another team sometime during training camp. However, don't expect much out of the veteran wide receiver as his best fantasy days are well behind him regardless of the team that he lands on.

03/07/07
Joe Horn is reported by ESPN to be ready to sign with the Atlanta Falcons at undisclosed terms.
Huddle Up: This means Horn will have two games against his old team each season though at 35-years of age, Horn is already one of the oldest receivers in the NFL. Horn has been hampered by injuries the last couple of seasons but has been a far better possession receiver than Michael Vick has been able to use as a Falcon. If Horn can remain healthy, it will be on Vick to show that he can connect with more than just tight end Alge Crumpler.

03/01/07
The New Orleans Saints have released Joe Horn after he refused to take a paycut. "Joe really wanted to see where his value is around the league for his services," general manager Mickey Loomis said. "With as much as Joe has meant to the Saints and to New Orleans, we don't want to impede his desire to do so, and we have kept the door open for him to return to our team."
Huddle Up: Horn could end up back with the Saints very easily. The 35-year old receiver is one of the oldest in the NFL and has been hampered by injuries in recent seasons. Horn usually played with pain but the last two years sidelined him often with hamstring or groin injuries. Horn is very popular in New Orleans but a 35 year-old wideout with recent injury woes may not be quite as attractive to other NFL teams has Horn believes.

01/10/07
WR Joe Horn is still suffering from a groin injury that kept him sidelined for the last four regular season games for the New Orleans Saints. Horn had 37 catches for 679 yards and 4 touchdowns on the season but is listed as questionable for the game against Philadelphia. "You win or you go home, and I don't want to have to sit on the sideline and witness that," Horn said. "I want to play in that football game and give everything I have. I want to be able to play, to help this organization and this city win a football game."
Huddle Up: This could likely be the last game for Horn in a Saints uniform if New Orleans loses to the Eagles Sunday. Regardless, it would not be a surprise to see Horn leave for retirement or free agency with the emergence of Marques Colston and Devery Henderson in the New Orleans receiving corps for 2007.
