2007 Outlook
It’s been three long seasons since the 49ers had a wideout of any note but the addition of Darrell Jackson should final give the fans someone to get excited about. Jackson was very consistent in Seattle with around 1100 yards and eight scores in years that he was not injured but his durability has been a big issue the last two years and undoubtedly was a part of the reason why Seattle allowed him to leave. Jackson missed ten games in 2005 and three games last year due to a variety of injury issues but even despite having only 13 games in 2006, he scored a career best ten touchdowns and had a 15.2 yard average per catch until he suffered a turf toe condition. His toe was still a problem earlier this spring but should be cleared up for training camp – or at least until he suffers something else.
Jackson is only 28 years old and has several good seasons left in him if he can hold up. He’s one of the lowest risk fantasy wideouts this year in the sense that it is guaranteed that he will be the starter and receive the majority of wideout catches. He brings not only terrific possession ability, but his 47 career touchdowns is far more than all other SF wideouts combined. He will be a factor in the endzone though tight end Vernon Davis will as well. The 49ers defense should be improved this year and rushing game is already stellar. That will place Jackson primarily into a possession, “keep the chains moving" role that should produce consistent numbers each week, even if they rarely ever turn into a truly big game. Alex Smith enters his third season and will improve – and to large extent because he actually has a top-flight wideout finally and not a set of receivers that make the average 49er fan thumb through the game program to see who they are.
Recent Priority News
09/02/08
Denver Broncos WR Darrell Jackson (ankle) is practicing through some discomfort. He said he will be ready for Week 1 and will probably start.
Huddle Up: Jackson will look to get the starting nod in Denver opposite rookie Eddie Royal in Week 1. With No. 1 receiver Brandon Marshall out of action for the first game on suspension, fantasy owners may want to consider other options in light of the fact that Jackson will likely not be 100% due to the ankle injury. Jackson and Royal should be considered No. 3 receivers at best for fantasy teams at the present time.
07/31/08
The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos WR Darrell Jackson is competing with WR Keary Colbert and WR Samie Parker for one of the team's starting wide receiver spots.
Huddle Up: Jackson, Colbert and Parker are all disappointments who are battling to save their careers. This will not only be one of the most spirited position competitions in all the league, the winner will be someone worth serious consideration for your fantasy roster. With the uncertainty surrounding No. 1 wideout Brandon Marshall, whoever wins this fight has a good chance at being a substantial contributor this season.
04/17/08
Darrell Jackson signed a one-year contract worth $1.5 million with the Denver Broncos and becomes one of a burgeoning crew of new receivers. The Broncos have now signed Jackson, Keary Colbert and Samie Parker to replace Javon Walker.
Huddle Up: With any luck, the three new recievers can combine for as much potential as Walker brought to the team. Unfortunately, it won't be hard for them to exceed Walker's numbers from 2007.
03/18/08
Shortly after signing WR Bryant Johnson from the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers have released veteran WR Darrell Jackson. "I always had a great deal of respect for Darrell," coach Mike Nolan said. "I appreciated his dedication and work ethic during his season with the 49ers. He always had a positive attitude every day he came to work. While we are going in a different direction, I know he can still produce and be an asset to an NFL team this year."
Huddle Up: The 49ers appear to be shaking up their lackluster receiving corp from last season and will currently have Bryant Johnson, Arnaz Battle and Issac Bruce as their top options heading into the preseason. Expect more additions as the 49ers work desperately to find receivers that can stretch the field and take the pressure off of star running back Frank Gore.
09/11/07
With only four receptions for 36 yards, Darrell Jackson
disappointed a lot of fantasy owners. He dropped a
sure TD pass late in the game and was otherwise a
non-factor.
Huddle Up: While Jackson averaged 90 yards and a score against
next week's opponent, St. Louis, while with Seattle last
season, think long and hard before trusting him. If
you're torn between D.J. and another viable receiver,
lean toward the other guy.
04/28/07
ESPN has reported that Seattle wideout Darrell Jackson has been traded to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 4th round pick this weekend, believed to be the 124th pick overall. Jackson must first pass a physical on Saturday for the trade to be finalized.
Huddle Up: Great move by the 49ers who were relying on Arnaz Battle and Ashley Lelie prior to this trade. Jackson has been a solid possession receiver for Seattle but has been dogged by various injuries over the years.
