2007 Outlook
The first round draft pick by the Falcons has never managed more than 508 yards in any of his three seasons but 2007 proved to be a breakout of sorts for the third year wideout. Jenkins led the team in touchdown catches with eight – five more than he had in his first two seasons combined. He scored once in six of the last ten games. Despite being such a valuable target in the endzone, Jenkins only once had more than 53 yards in any game and that was in the season opener. .
The new offense being installed by Petrino and crew certainly cannot hurt Jenkins’ numbers but with Vick under center, his upside is almost non-existent. Joe Horn will be on the field this year which could drain a little action away but at least Roddy White is considered much less consistent and allows Jenkins the chance to be the favored endzone target. At 6-4, Jenkins is tall enough to be a solid possession receiver and is already a weapon near the goal line. As always, it mostly depends on Vick.
08-15-07 Update: Jenkins falls in the rankings because he has been moved to the slot recently and Roddy White looks the most likely to fill the spot across from Joe Horn. The new coaching staff has thrown out the old depth charts and Jenkins has lost out in the process.
07-18-07 Update: Jenkins gets a healthy bump in the rankings with what appears to be the absence of Vick who was indicted in the dog fighting case. If Vick does not play, and that seems likely for a least a time, then the passing game overall gets upgraded even with Harrington and Jenkins has the biggest boost.
Recent Priority News
08/25/08
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Atlanta Falcons WR Michael Jenkins has taken over the starting job from WR Laurent Robinson.
Huddle Up: Not huge news considering the passing game will likely struggle with a rookie quarterback, but in deep drafts this is significant as anyone who could get points becomes valuable.
11/04/05
Michael Jenkins is still bothered by his sprained ankle and while there is no more swelling, he cannot cut without "feeling significant pain". He is listed as questionable and has been held out of practice.
Huddle Up: Jenkins looks like he won't be playing this week and the rookie Roddy White is expected to get his first career start this week. White is a speedster and could help stretch the field but as always - all that matters is if Vick and successfully get the pass to him against the above average secondary of the Dolphins.
10/29/04
The first round rookie receiver has done little this season, but the plan is to integrate him more into the offense now. "It is maybe more of a decision on our part to put him in there, find spots, and . . . force feed him in a little bit, kind of like we've done with [rookie] DeAngelo Hall," HC Jim Mora said. "We're working him more and more in our offense. And you'll see him play more this week, as a matter of fact."
Huddle Up: Jenkins was the fifth wideout taken in the NFL draft last April with the 1.29 pick by the Falcons. So far this season he has only had one pass thrown to him (that he didn't catch) and one run that was called back because of a penalty. While the Falcons need to improve passing, it's less likely because of the receiving end of each pass. Don't expect much from Jenkins this season but it will be good to see what the rookie can do with some playing time.
