2007 Outlook
The 6’6" ex-Arkansas quarterback came to the Jaguars in the first round of the 2005 NFL draft as the physical freak of the year (AKA Vernon Davis –’06, Calvin Johnson-’07). Jones is very fast and taller than any defensive back in the league. But so far – he cannot remain healthy. Jones had a better year in 2006 when he ended with 41 catches for 643 yards and four touchdowns. But all four scores and both 100 yard games came with David Garrard at quarterback. Now Byron Leftwich is back and the offense is changing again.
Jones suffered from a groin injury last year that forced him to miss a couple of games early in the year and he missed the final five games of 2005. HC Jack Del Rio has already publicly questioned if Jones can ever remain healthy because even when he does play, he often has a nagging injury. He already missed time in minicamp because of a quad injury. When he is healthy, he is the most productive. It just never seems to make it anything near 16 pain-free games. The new offense should benefit Jones though since it will be using deeper, more vertical routes which will absolutely play into his strengths of speed and leaping ability.
His risk means anything beyond a #3 fantasy wideout in a deep league is optimistic and you better have a replacement ready. But he enters his third season in what should be a better offense. As your primary back-up wideout, Jones is a great pick just in case he can turn the tide and remain healthy.
08-15-07 Update: Jones has been missing practice due to injury but is expected back soon. He still appears likely to be the #1 but the coaching staff is looking at all wideouts and Jones has been missing valuable time.
Recent Priority News
11/13/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones still has not heard from the NFL about the appeal of his three-game suspension. The NFL likely will not rule on the appeal this week, so Jones likely will play in Week 11.
Huddle Up: Suspensions are usually handed down on Tuesday or Wednesday, so all indications are the Jags will have their go-to receiver available for this week's tilt against the Titans—much to the chagrin of Joey Porter.
11/11/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones (leg) should be able to participate in practice this week. The injury does not appear to be serious.
Huddle Up: All the while, he's still waiting to hear if and when a suspension will come down for his preseason drug arrest. It's a little ridiculous that we're heading toward Week 11 and no decision has been made. But if you have Jones, we'll let you know when something breaks so you can make the proper roster decision for your team.
11/09/08
The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones (thigh) left the team's Week 10 game with a thigh injury. He finished with five receptions for 62 yards.
Huddle Up: Jones has been the most consistent of the Jaguar receivers this season but it appears he could miss some action in the coming weeks due to either his thigh injury or potential disciplinary action from the league for his off the field problems. Fantasy owners should watch his status closely leading up to the teams Week 11 game.
11/05/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones still has not heard from the NFL offices regarding the appeal of his suspension. He likely will play in the team's Week 10 game if he does not hear anything by late Wednesday, Nov. 5, or early Thursday, Nov. 6.
Huddle Up: Disciplinary action from the league could come at any time for Matt Jones who has been a nice option for the Jaguars passing game this season. Fantasy owners should consider him a No. 3 fantasy wideout as long as he remains in action on a consistent basis. Jacksonville has had a problem with the passing game for the last few seasons and 2008 appears to be no different as the Jags top receiver could miss some significant time if he is suspended.
11/04/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones is expected to get word about the appeal of his three-game suspension Wednesday, Nov. 5.
Huddle Up: This is fairly big news for fantasy owners, as Jones is a semi decent fantasy receiver overall. It is likely he'll get at least a game off, but it could be more. Be prepared to make the necessary adjustments, and look for guys like Dennis Northcutt and possibly Jerry Porter to pick up some of the slack, for what that is worth in Jacksonville.
10/31/08
The Florida Times-Union reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones is expected to play Week 9. Jones has yet to hear from the NFL regarding his appeal over a possible three-game suspension.
Huddle Up: Suspensions are usually handed down earlier in the week, before each club implements the game plan for Sunday, so it's reasonably safe to assume Jones will be available this weekend. That three-game suspension, however, still looms.
