2007 Outlook
The tall rookie only had 20 catches for 309 yards and two scores last year but 14 receptions for 233 yards came after week 13 when Jay Cutler was given the starting nod. Consider that Javon Walker only had 18 for 230 yards when Cutler started. Rod Smith only managed 14 for 130 yards. The Broncos had only acquired slot receiver Brandon Stokley in the offseason and Rod Smith returns one year older and slower. Marshall has a chance to build on a solid showing at the end of last year. His numbers won’t likely carry enough to warrant being a fantasy starter, but he’s definitely one to keep an eye on to see how quickly he develops and increases his playing time. In a keeper league, Marshall’s stock rises higher.
One note with Marshall. He was accused on charges of false imprisonment and domestic violence for allegedly stopping a taxi cab from bringing his girlfriend to the airport by blocking it with his car and then punching the windows. The charge was later dropped.
08-15-07 Update: Marshall moves up because Rod Smith is looking very unlikely to be much of a contributor this year.
Recent Priority News
06/29/08
The Rocky Mountain News reports Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall (hand) was cleared to fully participate in team activities this week. Marshall resumed full weightlifting and conditioning work. He has started to freely catch passes with both hands and has not encountered any problems.
Huddle Up: There is no question that Marshall is on the mend and ready to return to action as a Top 10 wideout in Denver. The only problem the reciever may face is if he is suspended due to some off the field problems he had in recent months. Keep an eye on his status leading up to the start of the NFL season. If Marshall avoids a suspension then fantasy owners should target him as a solid No. 1 receiver in an up and coming Denver offense.
06/25/08
The Denver Post reports Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall could be suspended by the NFL under its Personal Conduct Policy because of multiple arrests and alleged incidents. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is looking into Marshall's arrest in March.
Huddle Up: This would not be good for the Broncos if Marshall is suspended due to violations of NFL policies. Outside of Brandon Marshall the Broncos have a lackluster group of receivers that include Darrell Jackson, Brandon Stokley, Keary Colbert and Samie Parker. Marshall is clearly the go-to receiver of the bunch and a preseason low-end No. 1 or No. 2 fantasy receiver with tremendous upside in this offense. Fantasy owners should keep his value where it is for now but if he is suspended and misses time during the season then downgrade him slightly on your draft sheet. Regardless he would still be a worthy acquistion for fantasy owners during the second half of the season when the playoffs are on the line.
06/24/08
The Denver Post reports Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall (arm) lifted weights and ran Monday, June 23.
Huddle Up: An encouraging sign for the Broncos who badly need to have Brandon Marshall ready to hit the field when the season opens. Marshall, who badly injured some nerves in his arm in a domestic accident at his home in the offseason, is the Broncos No. 1 receiver and the main go-to guy for Jay Cutler in the Bronco offense. Fantasy owners should look for Marshall to more than likely start slowly but he should live up to his nickname "the Beast" and post solid numbers down the stretch in 2008. Grab him as a No. 2 receiver regardless of fantasy league format.
06/13/08
Denver wideout Brandon Marshall's status has been improving after suffering nerve damage to his arm in an offseason injury. Marshall has been practicing in organized team activities but has been limited to catching mostly with one arm at the present time. "I'm there mentally and physically right now," Marshall said. Marshall also said his right arm has gotten stronger after suffering nerve damage to it in March. He added, "I feel pretty good. I still have nerve damage, but I'm still going to catch a hundred balls."
Huddle Up: If there are no setbacks along the way then fantasy owners should expect a tremendous season out of "the Beast" as Marshall is known to some. He is a quality No. 1 wideout on an improving offense that should continually get better as quarterback Jay Cutler continues to grow in his knowledge of the pro game. Marshall would likely be a highly targeted wideout taken after the elite group of receivers that includes Terrell Owens, Randy Moss and Rggie Wayne but will slip down draft lists due to his offseason injury. The Denver receiver will be a prime sleeper in 2008 but has the potential to post elite receiver numbers if he fully recovers as expected. Take a chance on his as your No. 2 receiver and reap the benefits.
03/26/08
In a bizarre set of events WR Brandon Marshall suffered a serious arm injury that required surgery and could force the talented Denver wideout to miss up to four months. The injury occured after Marshall was horseplaying with family members and reportedly slipped on a fast food bag causing Marshall to fall and put his arm through an entertainment center. Broncos head trainer Steve Antonopulos stated that Marshall "sustained right forearm lacerations to one artery, one vein, one nerve, two tendons and three muscles." "All have been repaired, and his right forearm and elbow will be immobilized for six weeks," Antonopulos said. "Rehabilitation will begin in six weeks. Full recovery is expected to take three to four months."
Huddle Up: Marshall had a breakout season in Denver last year and is the clear cut No. 1 receiver on the team heading into 2008. Expect Marshall to be fully recovered from this injury prior to the beginning of the NFL preseason. Fantasy owners should view Marshall as a bonafide No. 1 fantasy receiver on a growing Denver offense.
12/10/07
Denver wideout Brandon Marshall turned in a strong performance Sunday by hauling in 10 receptions for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Denver victory.
Huddle Up: Marshall has really come to the forefrunt this year and has filled in nicely for the injured star Javon Walker in the Bronco offense. Brandon Marshall should continue to see numerous opportunities in the Denver offense and faces a nice schedule to end the year with Houston, San Diego and Minnsota. Fantasy owners should keep Marshall in their lineups as a No. 2 reciever for the rest of the year.
