2007 Outlook
This is simply the most interesting situation of all NFL wide receivers. And the most productive... maybe. The 30-year old Moss had not turned in more than 1005 yards in any of the last three seasons though he did have 13 touchdowns in 2004 during his final year in Minnesota. His time in Oakland produced two injury shortened years and perhaps one of the biggest "malcontent" performances of recent memory. Moss only had 42 catches for 553 yards and three scores last year in the offensive black hole known as the Oakland Raiders of 2006. There are now two parts of the equation to consider what Moss may do this year with Tom Brady throwing him passes.
First - has Moss' skills diminished as reported by sour grape ex-coaches? Hard to say since Moss has been unable to remain healthy all season since 2003. When healthy in 2004, Moss was still very productive with scores in all but two games when he was healthy. His first season In Oakland, his initial four games posted 117 yards per game on average with five catches in each and two scores. But then he was injured and plodded the rest of the year as mostly a decoy. In 2006, the well-documented fall-out with the new coaching staff left Moss little used if for no other reason than the quarterbacks could not even pass the ball before getting crushed. That season should be no measuring stick either. Moss is only 30 years old and has been wildly productive when healthy (which isn't always) and when on a team with a good offense (which wasn't last year).
Secondly, Moss now plays for the Patriots and their passing game that never focuses much on one receiver by design. Then again, there have been few receivers there that rank highly. For the last five seasons, the Patriots have had a different lead receiver in every year. But under Brady, there have been individual performances in the past with fantasy value. Troy Brown turned in 1199 and 890 yards in his first two seasons with Brady. Branch then had 803 in 2003 and then 998 yards in 2005. Those first two seasons with Brady had Troy Brown catching 101 and 97 passes. But also relevant, the Patriots have Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker to add to the same mix that played last season. There are only so many balls to distribute in New England and Brown's big years were when there were almost no other decent receivers. This will be a fascinating year for Moss and one that could define his career. Play back to form and head into the playoffs or tail off as he has and get injured once again. Regardless, Moss brings a very nice target in the endzone this year even if his receptions and yards wane.
07-27-07 Update: Moss tumbles a couple of spots because he hasn't been able to practice with Brady due to a hamstring issue. The Pats still contend that Moss will be ready for the start of the season but there is just more risk with Moss not practicing with his new team and new quarterback while nursing yet another hamstring strain. Big upside here but equally troubling risk.
Recent Priority News
09/24/07
The New England Patriots secured the services of Randy Moss from Oakland for a fourth round draft pick. Moss has in turn returned to his Pro-Bowl form and developed a nice rapport with veteran QB Tom Brady. Moss turned in another stellar performance against the Bills on Sunday as he caught 5 passes for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Patriots past the Bills 38-7. "He's a mismatch every time he's out there," Brady said. "My job's easy. I've just got to throw it up there."
Huddle Up: Moss should continue to put up big numbers week in and week out with Brady throwing him the ball. Fantasy owners that have Moss have been smiling so far and there is no indication to think he will not produce like this all season long.
09/17/07
Randy Moss, who has been missing in action for the last couple of seasons while he was in Oakland, has been found in New England. The veteran all-pro receiver caught 8 passes for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns during the Patriots 38-14 drubbing of the Chargers.
Huddle Up: Well after two weeks of the NFL season Moss appears rejuvenated in the New England offense. It is apparent that Moss and Brady have a good chemistry together and will score lots of fantasy points for their owners this season. There was no need for the Patriots to spy on the defense for San Diego as they had their way all night long with the Chargers secondary.
09/10/07
WR Randy Moss was on his game Sunday as the New England Patriots pasted the New York Jets 38-14. Moss, who was acquired in the offseason from the Oakland Raiders, hauled in 9 catches for 183 yards and 1 touchdown on the afternoon. "He was a great player before he got to the Patriots," Brady said. "Obviously, he's still a great player."
Huddle Up: Moss is clearly on the same page with Tom Brady despite missing most of the preseason. Fantasy owners should consider Moss a must-start in this offense every week and should not even think about his last two seasons in Oakland. This seems to be a new Randy Moss and he could post huge numbers this season.
09/06/07
WR Randy Moss was added to the Patriots injury report today under the category of "limited participation in practice".
Huddle Up: This is more than likely just the team taking extra precautions with Moss due to the fact he has missed some time in the preseason with his hamstring injury. Fantasy owners need to monitor this situation closely up until gametime to see if he is downgraded any further. Fantasy owners look for WR Donte Stallworth to get more targets in the offense this weekend due to the limited reps of Moss.
09/03/07
Randy Moss, who has missed a big portion of the preseason and training camp with a hamstring injury is still not back to where he needs to be to start the season. "I guess nobody is telling you anything, so I'll just hold it a question mark too. My thing is that I want to play. Will I play? I don't know. We'll just leave it at that."
Huddle Up: With Moss' status up in the air at this point Fantasy owners will need to check back closer to gametime to see if the news from New England is more favorable. Even if Moss does play don't look for big numbers from him this week since he has missed quite a bit of time in working with Tom Brady and the New England offense.
08/23/07
Randy Moss continues to nurse a hamstring strain and will not play this weekend. He is still expected to be ready in time for the season opener against the Jets in New York.
Huddle Up: Teaming up with Tom Brady and the powerful offense of the Patriots seems a great way to re-ignite Moss' career but so far that balky hamstring has prevented anyone from seeing much of Moss in a Patriot's uniform. That will either mean he is going too low in fantasy drafts since no one can know how good he can be in New England or know if his two years in Oakland were jsut signaling the end of his productive career. That all makes Moss a high-upside pick with more than a little risk of flopping - particularly if his injury woes extend into the regular season.
