2007 Outlook
Though he openly quarreled with the coaching staff last year and only had one catch all year, Porter is back in the good graces of the team and on board with the new coaches and offensive scheme. After two seasons of flirting with 1000 yards and seven scores on average, Porter disappeared in 2006 along with most of the Raiders’ sense of dignity. Forget last year, Porter is the most experienced and talented wideout on the team and likely the only one with a lock on a starting job. At 29 years of age and seven years in the NFL, now is the time for Porter to step up if his career is to ever be more than unrealized promise. Porter has never been the #1 wideout before and this will be new to him, along with the playbook and his quarterback who may switch from Josh McCown to the rookie JaMarcus Russell at some point in the season. That’s risk to be sure, but as deeply as Porter can be had in most leagues, he has much more upside this year.
Recent Priority News
09/27/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jerry Porter (hamstring) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 26. He is listed as probable for the team's Week 4 game and is expected to play, but head coach Jack Del Rio said he will be a game-time decision.
Huddle Up: Porter had a full week of practice but the Jags continue to be very cautious with his return to action. There's a better than 50-50 chance he'll get on the field for the first time this season on Sunday, but we won't know until right before kickoff.
09/25/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jerry Porter (hamstring) practiced in full Thursday, Sept. 25, and he looks to be OK.
Huddle Up: It looks like Porter will finally make an appearance in Week 4 when the Jags battle the Houston Texans. If the veteran receiver is still residing on your waiver wire and you are looking for some receiver depth then he could be a nice addition. The main thing to remember here is that he is not very durable and could go down again at any time.
09/23/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jerry Porter (hamstring) is making progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury. While he may be able to return to action during Week 4, he is likely going to still be limited during practice.
Huddle Up: The team needs he and/or Dennis Northcutt to get healthy and step up. The news keeps being pushed out that they are 'making progress' but it isn't translating to help on the field.
09/19/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jerry Porter (hamstring) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 19. He is listed as questionable for Week 3 and is not expected to play in the game.
Huddle Up: The Jaguars have been without Porter for their first two games and nothing appears ready to change this week. He has been a disappointment so far for the Jags and fantasy owners this year. Porter should still be considered as no better than a No. 4 receiver even when he returns with all the offensive line problems which will keep QB Garrard from getting him the ball consistently.
09/12/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jerry Porter (hamstring) participated in practice Friday, Sept. 12. He is listed as questionable for Week 2 and may be held out of the game.
Huddle Up: With Reggie Williams and Matt Jones currently seeing action in the starting lineup for Jacksonville, there appears to be no rush in working Porter back into action before he is ready. If you are a fantasy owner of Porter it would be adviseable to let him play for a week before starting him since he will likely be rusty missing most of the preseason.
09/10/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jerry Porter (hamstring) likely will resume practicing this week.
Huddle Up: Doesn't mean he'll play for sure, but at least there is a chance. He's evidently close to coming back.
