2007 Outlook
Smith comes off a down year but still had 1166 yards and eight touchdowns in 2006. That paled to the 1563 yards and 12 touchdowns he turned in for 2005.He missed the first two weeks with a hamstring strain but roared back to life with 112 yards in week three against TB. Over the first eight games that he played, Smith totaled 870 yards on 57 receptions but along with the rest of the team, Smith took a nosedive as the wheels fell off the offensive wagon. For the next five weeks – right through fantasy playoffs – Smith never had more than 67 yards and even failed to make a single catch in week 16 when owners needed him most.
Smith was openly critical of the offensive play calling (as were others) and the Panthers have a new OC in Jeff Davidson from Cleveland (but mostly New England). The new playbook calls for a return of the slant pass which Smith has been deadly within the past and Smith is already excited about 2007. He’s healthy and he’s happy. Now he just needs to be as productive as he already has proven he is capable of being. The Panthers have a much lighter schedule this year and Smith should be the direct beneficiary.
08-24-07 Update: Smith falls from the top spot to the #2 mostly because no clear-cut #2 has emerged from Drew Carter, Keary Colbert or Dwayne Jarrett. He will still get a ton of passes and could easily remain the #1 wideout, but the lack of a credible #2 so far means Chad Johnson is a better risk.
Recent Priority News
12/24/07
Carolina receiver Steve Smith returned to his All-Pro form in Week 16 as the Panthers played one of their best games of the season only to fall 20-13 to the Dallas Cowboys. Smith had 9 receptions for 137 yards and 1 touchdown in the contest to lead all recievers. Smith's touchdown came in the second quarter on a 11-yard strike from rookie quarterback Matt Moore.
Huddle Up: Smith has been a huge disappointment for fantasy owners that spent a high draft pick on him this season. His struggles have been directly related to the subpar play of the Carolina quarterbacks all season long. Look for Smith to struggle again in Week 17 against a strong Tampa Bay secondary led by Ronde Barber.
11/20/07
The Charlotte Observer reports that Smith's shin has
healed sufficiently enough that he can play this
weekend against New Orleans.
Huddle Up: If Smith truly is 100 percent, he should light up the
pathetic New Orleans secondary.
11/16/07
Smith missed a third straight practice due to a shin
contusion, and is now a game time decision for
Sunday's game against Green Bay.
Huddle Up: Look for another WR option if possible, because it
appears Smith will be sitting out.
11/15/07
Carolina's star receiver Steve Smith missed practice again on Thursday due to a shin injury sustained in Week 10 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Huddle Up: It is unclear at this point how serious the injury to Smith is but one thing is certain, fantasy owners should downgrade all offensive players for the Panthers if Smith is not in the lineup. If Smith returns to the practice field on Friday then he will most likely play against the Packers on Sunday.
10/15/07
Steve Smith shined on the field for the Carolina Panthers in Week 6 despite being without QB Jake Delhomme throwing him the ball. Backup QB David Carr also sat out the game with a stiff back and newly acquired Vinny Testaverde stepped in and promptly found Carolina's star receiver late in the game on a 65-yard pass play for a touchdown. Smith caught 10 passes for 136 yards and 1 touchdown in the contest to lead all receivers. "When I threw the ball, I saw the defender stop and all I could think was, 'I just overthrew Steve for a touchdown,' " Testaverde said. "But he caught it and ran, and I was looking at his feet to make sure he didn't go out of bounds."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners that have Steve Smith know how valuable he is to their fantasy teams. Smith continues to be an elite No. 1 receiver regardless of matchup and with Testaverde controling the Carolina offense expect nice numbers out of him for the near future.
10/06/07
The Carolina Panthers got another scare Friday when starting wideout Steve Smith sustained a leg injury during the teams practice session. "It was one play, and he was limited," Fox said. "But we think he's fine."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners will need to monitor Smith's status up to gametime but it appears at the present that he will be good to go when Carolina takes on New Orleans Sunday.
WR Drew Carter would take over for Smith in the event he was ever out of the game.
