2007 Outlook
When Stallworth left New Orleans last year to pursue being the #1 wideout in Philadelphia, he had reasons to be optimistic trading Aaron Brooks for Donovan McNabb. Ends up – same old, same old. Stallworth turned in 725 yards and five scores on just 38 catches and only started 11 games thanks to injuries. About the same as he had in New Orleans every year. He has yet to start more than 13 games in a season though he played the full year for his final two seasons in New Orleans. Now he goes to the Patriots who already have Randy Moss and a slew of other receivers. He has the chance to fight for the #2 spot but his history says he’s much better suited to playing a slot role in a multiple receiver set. He has the speed, he just does not have the durability or ability to make tougher catches over the middle. Chances are excellent that he will be drafted this summer well ahead of what his true value will end up being.
Recent Priority News
08/10/08
The Associated Press reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards (foot) received an undisclosed amount of stitches on the back of his foot after he was spiked by teammate Donte' Stallworth during a race in practice Saturday, Aug. 9. Edwards was only wearing socks while running against Stallworth, whose cleat caused a gash to open up after he stepped on Edwards' right heel. Edwards was released from the Cleveland Clinic Sunday, Aug. 10, after spending the night for precautionary measures. Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said the injury is not considered serious but did not say when Edwards would return to practice.
Huddle Up: This is not considered a serious injury so fantasy owners should not be downgrading Edwards on their fantasy draft boards. He still remains a top 5 receiver choice in an emerging offense that should only get better in Cleveland this year. With the addition of Donte Stallworth opposite of Edwards he should get more opportunities especially if Stallworth can prove to be as deadly as the Browns envision.
08/03/08
The Repository reports the Cleveland Browns wide receiving corps is up in the air until WR Donte' Stallworth (hamstring) gets his timing down with QB Derek Anderson. Stallworth missed time due to a hamstring injury and is working his way back.
Huddle Up: This should be just a hiccup on the way to a fairly productive season. While Stallworth will likely be the third receiver on the team (Winslow will be second to Edwards) he should still put up numbers worthy of a mid round starter due to the heavy passing game employed by Cleveland. The hamstring is tying him up however, so timing will be an issue early on, but should resolve itself well.
07/23/08
The Associated Press reports Cleveland Browns WR Donte' Stallworth (hamstring) was held out of the team's first workout Wednesday, July 23, with a hamstring injury.
Huddle Up: Same problem but different team for the oft injured Stallworth who seems to always battle bad hammy problems. With the Browns banking on Stallworth to be the No. 2 receiver in Cleveland, expect the team to take precautions with him during training camp and preseason. If the talented Stallworth can solve the hammy situation that has hampered him over the years he could post some huge numbers in an offense that will likely see No. 1 receiver Braylon Edwards double covered alot this year.
07/14/08
The Boston Globe reports Cleveland Browns WR Donte' Stallworth is excited about how he will be used within the team's offense this season, particularly as a downfield threat. 'I'm really excited about this offense; personally, I'll do more things than I've done in the past,' said Stallworth. 'I'll run some downfield routes, kind of like what I was doing in Philly. Just the prospect of adding that back to my game is something interesting.'
Huddle Up: Stallworth is a prime sleeper candidate for the Browns this year and should develop into a nice complement for No. 1 wide receiver Braylon Edwards. If Stallworth can stay healthy and remain on the field he could make fantasy owners a very good No. 3 wideout with the potential to be even better. He has always underachieved and been held back due to injuries but this could be the breakout season for the 6th year receiver who has always been brimming with talent.
09/22/07
New England receiver Donte Stallworth was limited in practice on Friday and is listed as questionable with a knee injury for Sunday.
Huddle Up: With WR Randy Moss returning to his dominating form he will likely draw more attention than usual from opposing defenses. This will in turn force Brady to look at other recievers more often such as Stallworth and Welker who could benefit from Moss being double covered. Fantasy owners should temper their expectations for Stallworth at least for this week due to this lingering knee injury.
08/25/07
WR Donte Stallworth returned to the field Friday night after being out with a hamstring injury. Stallworth responded by catching 3 passes for 45 yards from Tom Brady. The longest reception was a 37-yard toss down the sideline that Stallworth went up and caught over top of the defender.
Huddle Up: Stallworth has been developing a nice raport with quarterback Tom Brady during the offseason. If he can stay healthy he could post some big numbers opposite of Randy Moss in this high octane offense.
