2007 Outlook
The 33-year old wideout enters his 11th season with the Giants and his production is quickly falling off the map. Starting in 2002, Toomer has declined in yardage every year and only played eight games in 2006 thanks to a partially torn ACL in his left knee. He underwent surgery and expects to play this year but his yards per catch is down to a career low 11.3 yards and was only 11.4 yards in 2005. Toomer has lost a step or two and is slowly heading for the pasture. His final full season in 2005 still only produced 60 catches for 684 yards. The Giants will not push Toomer in training camp so he comes with a little risk since it will be tougher to gauge how well he has rehabbed his 32 year-old knee. Also complicating matters is that the rookie Steve Smith has been very impressive so far and could merit some playing time at the expense of Toomer if he does not come roaring back healthy.
Recent Priority News
11/08/06
New York Giants WR Amani Toomer will miss the rest of the season with a partially torn ACL in his left knee. Toomer felt pain in his knee during the Giants' 14-10 defeat of Houston on Sunday, but he finished the game and didn't know the extent of his injury until he had an MRI exam on Monday. The Giants' all-time leading receiver will undergo surgery to repair the tear.
Huddle Up: The loss of Toomer to fantasy owners shouldn't mean too much - he's recorded only eight catches and 72 yards total with zero TDs in the past four games. Toomer's injury means more looks for No. 1 WR Plaxico Burress and TE Jeremy Shockey, and fantasy owners in deeper leagues should monitor the production of backup WR Tim Carter, who will inherit more playing time in Toomer's absence.
01/02/05
Toomer has been downgraded to doubtful this week with his hamstring injury and he is expected to be replaced by David Tyree for the Cowboys game.
11/16/04
Toomer bruised his ribs against the Cardinals last week during the fourth quarter but continued to play. He will likely be questionable or even doubtful to play against the Falcons on Sunday.
11/05/04
Toomer played against the Vikings last week with a strained hamstring but has practiced all week and appears to be back to 100% health for the Chicago game on Sunday.
10/31/04
Toomer has made it through pre-game warmups and the hamstring appears to be good enough for him to start today for the Giants.
10/29/04
Toomer again was held out of practice on Thursday with a bad hamstring and may not play against the Vikings on Sunday. Toomer has not missed a game since his rookie season in 1996. HC Tom Coughlin said that Toomer was "day-to-day" and that he was improving but so far that's only been some stationary bike work and stretching.
Huddle Up: With Tim Carter and now possibly Toomer sidelined, the rookie Jamaar Taylor will fill in if Toomer cannot play. Taylor had two catches last week in his first game of the season.
