2007 Outlook
The 31-year old wide receiver now enters his 10th NFL season and his age appears to be starting to catch up to him. After never missing a game in his first seven seasons, he was out for one week in 2005 and missed two games last year while playing hurt in others. Ward injured his knee in week 13 which included a broken bone which required arthroscopic surgery. He ended the year with the exact same yardage as in 2005 - 975 yards. Notable too is that his touchdown totals plummeted from 11 to only six last year which in part reflected the struggles of Ben Roethlisberger but also the play of Nate Washington and the rookie Santonio Holmes.
Ward has never been that big on yardage and his career high came in 2002 when he had 1329 yards on 112 catches but he's been closer to the 1000 yard mark for each of the last four years. His role as the touchdown guy is what propped up his fantasy value and now with other weapons for Roethlisberger, Ward does not need to provide such a high percentage of all catches for the Steelers to win a game. As a possession receiver and devastating blocker downfield, it doesn't really matter if Ward has lost a step or not - that is not so much his role anyway. But the erosion of his touchdowns is troubling in fantasy terms and the improvement that Washington and Holmes have made to the wideout crew should keep Ward to moderate numbers in most games. He's almost a guaranteed lock to catch four passes for 50 yards every week and he'll do a bit better in many others, but he only had two 100 yard games last year. He's a safe draft pick but not one that will be a difference maker for your fantasy team.
Recent Priority News
01/08/08
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward is scheduled to have knee surgery since the season is now over. It is unclear as to the extent of the surgery and how much time he would miss if any during the offseason programs.
Huddle Up: At this point Ward should be considered no more than a
No. 2 receiver for fantasy teams in 2008 since he has been battling injuries all year and Santonio Holmes has emerged as the top target on the Pittsburgh offense. Look for updates on his status as the offseason progresses.
12/03/07
The Pittsburgh Steelers didn't play their best game of the season Sunday night against Cincinnati but they did play well enough to win thanks to WR Hines Ward. Ward, drafted in 1998 out of Georgia, hauled in 11 passes for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns which was the difference in the game. Ward caught touchdown passes of 2 yards and 8 yards in the contest.
Huddle Up: Ward continues to be a strong starting option for fantasy teams as a No. 2 receiver this season. Pittsburgh will face the juggernaut New England Patriots in Week 14 so be sure to start Ward as the Steelers will likely be playing from behind and throwing alot to catch up.
10/05/07
An additional MRI performed on Ward's troublesome
knee has revealed some fluid on the knee. He has
been ruled out for Sunday's game against Seattle.
Huddle Up: Backup Nate Washington will get his second start of
the season.
10/03/07
After missing last week's game, the knee injury Ward is dealing with may continue to keep him out of action. The team's official stance is that he's day-to-day. "He had a good day of rehab," HC Mike Tomlin said Tuesday. "I spoke with him and he feels good. We will take it day to day and see where he is. We'll do what's smart in that area, but that decision will be determined later in the week."
Huddle Up: All Ward owners will need to keep an eye on the late week practice reports and injury updates. If he's unable to get on the practice field by Friday there's a good chance he'll sit out the Seattle game this weekend.
09/29/07
The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without the services of starting WR Hines Ward when the Pittsburgh Steelers battle the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Ward is listed as out for the game nursing a sprained right knee.
Huddle Up: Replacing Ward in the Pittsburgh lineup will be Cedric Wilson and Nate Washington. Fantasy owners should look for increased production out of WR Santonio Holmes this week as he will likely be the go to receiver for Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers.
09/25/07
Ward has been listed as doubtful for this weekend's
game against Arizona due to a sprained knee suffered
in Week 3 against San Francisco.
Huddle Up: If Ward can't go, look for Santonio Holmes to get a lot
more balls thrown his way.
