2007 Outlook
Following the traditional route, Williams had his breakout season in his third year when 2006 saw him catch 82 passes for 1310 yards and seven touchdowns. He has never had less than those seven scores in a season but he almost doubled his career best yardage in his first year in the Martz offense in Detroit. He ended with six games over 100 yards and four of those exceeded 130 yards. The drafting of Calvin Johnson should not dig into Williams’ numbers (but will for Furrey) since by mid-season, defenses were content on blanketing Williams and letting Furrey end up with 98 catches on the year. Secondaries will not have that luxury once, or if, Johnson can meet his expectations.
Williams is now entering his prime years as an NFL wideout and plays in an excellent offense for generating big passing numbers. While Johnson gathers the attention, don’t forget that Williams’ ranked #3 in the NFL last year with 1310 yards while escorting much of the secondary around the field every week. It’s too early, of course, to overrate Johnson but what worked well with Holt and Bruce now turns into Williams, Johnson and Furrey.
Recent Priority News
08/03/08
The Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions WR Roy Williams was unhappy about something during practice for the second consecutive day. Williams said he was frustrated and would not answer any questions from the press.
Huddle Up: This is a bad sign. With all the trade talk involving Williams in the offseason, the last thing the team wants to see is Williams having issues on the field. If this isn't corrected quickly it will grow into a distraction, whatever it is, as this is the way it goes in Detroit. A distraction is the last thing the Lions need, and fantasy owners expecting another nice season from Williams don't need it either.
12/19/07
The Detroit Lions placed Roy Williams on injured reserve, ending his 2007 season with 63 receptions for 836 yards and five touchdowns.
Huddle Up: Williams enjoyed a few very nice games but wasn't nearly the dominant receiver this season with other options like Calvin Johnson and Shaun McDonald added to the offense. Williams will recuperate in the offseason and is expected to be 100% for all mini-camps.
12/03/07
HC Rod Marinelli confirmed Monday that Roy Williams sprained his PCL in the Lions' loss Sunday. Marinelli says he could miss "several weeks." With only four weeks left in the regular season, speculation is that Williams is likely to miss the rest of it.
Huddle Up: This slides all Detroit receivers up the fantasy food chain, especially Mike Furrey, who has been the most consistent Lions wideout all season. Shaun McDonald, another solid fantasy performer at times this season, will also benefit. The continually disappointing Calvin Johnson not so much.
12/02/07
Detroit WR Roy Williams sustained an injury to his right knee injury in Sunday's 42-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He left the game in the second quarter and did not return but did have five catches for 85 yards on the day.
Huddle Up: The injury will be evaluated further on Monday however it was a good sign that the Lions indicated that Williams was probable to return to the game in the second quarter but since the game was out of hand they held him out. Fantasy owners should monitor the news on Williams to determine if he will play in Week 14.
10/12/06
Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams (back) missed practice Wednesday, October 11th, for personal reasons and is expected to practice today, commenting to local media that he expects to play Sunday. Williams continues to be listed as probable on the Lions injury report.
Huddle Up: A bit of good news after a week of bad in Motown. Though it appears Williams will play Sunday, the dinged playmaker isn't a great fantasy option this week, facing an effective Buffalo Bills defense that features strong cover corners and will also take advantage of the Lions weakened offensive line to force Kitna to hurry his throws.
10/11/06
Contrary to previous reports, it now appears that Lions WR Roy Williams (shoulder, back) is not likely to play in the team's home game against Buffalo in Week 6. According to a report in the Detroit News, Williams hasn't ruled out playing, but the team claims that he is doubtful. Williams injured his shoulder and back early in the Lions' Week 5 loss to the Vikings.
Huddle Up: Anything can happen here, but Williams' fantasy owners should prepare for the worst. Lions backup WR Az-Zahir Hakeem should be a reliable fill-in in Williams' stead, and he proved as much against the Vikings with eight catches and 92 yards after Williams went out on the Lions' first drive.
