2007 Outlook
Two years in and the speedy Williamson has not shown much more than the ability to drop passes and disappear in games. His career high is only 37 catches for 455 yards and he went all of 2006 without a single touchdown. Bringing in the west coast style offense with HC Brad Childress did him no favors either – if he has a strength it is in straight line speed down the sidelines – not shorter timing routes over the middle. His average yardage per catch fell from 15.5 as a rookie down to just 12.3 last year. Williamson will likely remain the starter in Minnesota because of the investment they have in him and the lack of other credible receivers to challenge him but the offense is not suited to his style and will feature the inexperienced Tavaris Jackson at quarterback. That’s enough to let someone else draft him.
Recent Priority News
08/29/08
The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Troy Williamson caught four passes for 84 receiving yards with a touchdown Thursday, Aug. 28.
Huddle Up: What the AP didn't say is that they threw 72 passes to Williamson so he could make the four catches. We jest, but don't let these stats deceive you: despite David Garrard playing three series in this game, all of Williamson's catches came from the backup quarterbacks. He's still buried on the depth chart, and the most he'll bring to the fantasy table is the potential for a few deep balls—followed by several seconds of profuse swearing after he drops the ball despite no one being within 10 yards of him. But maybe that's worth something in your league's scoring system.
07/01/08
The Pioneer Press reports word out of Jacksonville indicates that Jacksonville Jaguars WR Troy Williamson enjoyed the best minicamp workouts of any player on the team.
Huddle Up: Williamson is projected to be the starting receiver opposite veteran Jerry Porter in the Jaguars offense this season but will be pushed in training camp by Matt Jones, Dennis Northcutt and John Brussard. If Williamson continues to star for the Jags in training camp he could be a nice No. 3 or No. 4 fantasy sleeper at the wideout position this year.
06/09/08
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Troy Williamson caught almost everything thrown his way during the team's two-day minicamp over the weekend. Williamson had a problem dropping passes last season with the Vikings but has made good progress during the offseason.
Huddle Up: Williamson will be looking to land a starting receiver position in training camp and joins Jerry Porter, Matt Jones, Dennis Northcutt and Reggie Williams on the Jaguars roster. Fantasy owners should wait and see how things are shaping up when training camps officially open in July before taking a chance on any Jacksonville receivers this season.
11/03/07
Troy Williamson will miss the game against San Diego fur to the death of his grandmother. He has also been dealing with his brother who has been in and out of a coma after a car accident in September.
Huddle Up: Williamson carried minimal fantasy value anyway, but it's yet another problem for the Vikes who already may be without Bobby Wade.
11/24/06
Viking WR Troy Williamson's role is expected to lessen
the rest of the season. Williamson has dropped a
league-high 10 passes, and has only caught three
passes for 39 yards in his last three games.
Huddle Up: Not that anyone was relying on Williamson anyway, but
Marcus Robinson and Bethel Johnson will get more
playing time in Williamson's absence.
10/27/06
The Minnesota receiving corps will be crippled Monday night. Troy Williamson
has been downgraded to questionable due to a concussion, and Marcus
Robinson has already been ruled out due to a back injury. And if that's not
bad enough, Travis Taylor suffered a concussion against Seattle as well.
Huddle Up: At least Taylor is expected to play. Look for a lot of controlled passing to
Jermaine Wiggins and a healthy, healthy dose of Chester Taylor against the
Patriots.
