HOT TOPIC

The Chris Henry count us up to four in seven months.

The second-year wide receiver was arrested again Wednesday, June 14, after turning himself into police in Covington, Ky. He was charged with three counts of unlawful transaction with a minor for allegedly providing alcohol to three underage women at a hotel on Covington's riverfront.

Henry, 22, of Florence, was arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Friday in Kenton District Court. Kenton District Judge Douglas Grothaus ordered Henry, who has a drunken driving charge pending in Clermont County, to not drink any alcohol as a condition of his bond. Henry was also ordered to have no contact with minors.

Prosecutor Ken Easterling said the case is still active and additional charges against Henry, and the others present at the hotel, are possible. Henry remains free on a $2,500 cash bond. A pretrial hearing is set for June 29 in Kenton District Court.

The Bengals had their standard comment about Henry's latest alleged legal transgression.

"We don't comment on something when it's just in the stages of charges," Bengals public relations director Jack Brennan said.

In December, Henry was charged with marijuana possession in Covington. He pleaded guilty to the charge and, as part of a plea agreement, avoided jail time by entering a drug rehabilitation program.

In January, while in Orlando, Henry was arrested by Orange County police and charged with three gun-related offenses, two of which were dropped. He still faces an August court date in Orlando for illegal possession of a concealed weapon.

Then, on June 3, an Ohio High Patrol officer stopped Henry for speeding on Interstate 275 in Union Township, Clermont County. The trooper smelled alcohol about Henry and his automobile, and after Henry was said to have failed field sobriety tests, he was arrested and taken to the Milford Police Department. There he voluntarily submitted to a breath test and measured a 0.092; 0.08 is the legal limit in Ohio. He faces another court date in Clermont County later this month.

Asked Thursday about the latest alleged Henry transgression to go public, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said, "He'll recover from this."

Henry, who sprained his knee in the wildcard playoff loss to Pittsburgh, still has not been cleared medically to practice. An NFL team cannot release an injured player. Trainer Paul Sparling said Henry was still 2-3 weeks away from being cleared.

PLAYER NOTES

--Odell Thurman was not present Thursday (June 15) and has been excused from the entire minicamp for "personal reasons," coach Marvin Lewis said.

Defensive tackle Sam Adams worked with trainers on the sideline during practice and rode a stationary exercise bike much of the time.

Keiwan Ratliff worked as a starting cornerback with the first team opposite Tory James in Deltha O'Neal's spot. O'Neal practiced for part of the day but sat out part of the afternoon work. Coach Marvin Lewis said O'Neal needed more individual work on the side.

--At one point during the morning practice, Lewis yelled at first-round pick Johnathan Joseph, a cornerback. "Keep your eyes out of the backfield, Johnathan," Lewis barked.

Joseph conceded that he is being "coached hard," but he welcomes the tough love.

"I think I've made tremendous strides, things like staying in my backpedal longer, coming out of my break, coming out of my break, learning the keys to determine whether it's a pass or run," Joseph said.

--The Bengals will have three more practices Friday and Saturday, and they will have two more weeks of conditioning work before officially breaking. They will open training camp with a night practice July 29 at Georgetown College near Lexington, Ky.

--The Bengals took batting practice at Great American Ball Park Wednesday morning before the Reds-Brewers game. The Reds don't take BP before a day game that follows a night game, and so the Reds invited Lewis and his players to take the slot. Linebacker David Pollack hit five balls out of the park, and wide receiver Chad Johnson hit one. Lewis fouled off a pitch into the batting cage. The players also spent about 45 minutes touring the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, located midway on Cincinnati's central riverfront between Paul Brown Stadium and the baseball park.

"I really appreciate the Reds allowing us to do that, the (owners) Castellinis and Jerry (Narron), the manager, just tremendous," Lewis said. "It was great. The guys enjoyed it. Had a good time. We had an opportunity to tour the Freedom Center on our way there. We spent almost 45 minutes over there. A chance for the guys to learn something about something some of them didn't know enough about. So it was great."
