Other BTA Positions: Quarterback | Running Back | Wide Receiver | Tight End
Better Than Average (BTA) was developed to show how players truly rank between themselves by looking at every game from 2009 and for each defense and determining three things:
"8" - Which players scored in the top 8 game performances for fantasy points allowed by a defense. Basically, which players had an above average performance (top 8 in a 16 game season) that a defense gave up.
"4" - Which players scored in the top 4 in game performances for fantasy points allowed by a defense.
"1" - Who had the most fantasy points scored in a game against each defense last season. There could only by 32 such events since each defense can only allow one "best game".
BTA - Simply adding up the 1, 4 and 8 values to arrive at a numerical expression of how effective a wide receiver truly was last year compared to all other wideouts. The ease or strength of schedule doesn't matter. Only what a player did against all other players in that position against that defense.

It is a challenge enough for any wideout to turn in the best performance against any defense given that it will typically face at least three per week. To do it more than once is a major feat and to no surprise, Andre Johnson managed to do it a league high three games where he outperformed all other wideouts that would end up facing that defense for the season. While Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald would be expected in the elite grouping, Miles Austin and Brandon Marshall showed up as well. Even Roddy White who seemingly had an off year rated a top seven performance in overall BTA which indicates a softer schedule for 2010 should be even more fruitful along with a more experienced Matt Ryan.
There could be a major shake up in this listing this year. Moss may not benefit from Welker and Jackson gets a new quarterback as does Fitzgerald. Austin may share with the rookie Dez Bryant and Marshall heads to Miami where they like to run. Even Vincent Jackson starts out with a suspension so this group could really change next year.
