2010 Sizing Up the Quarterbacks

Other Positions:  Quarterbacks  |  Running Backs  |  Wide Receivers

In all positions, size does matter to at least some degree. Obviously talent is critical but without the size to play in the NFL - does it really matter how fast a player is or how well he can pass the ball? The intent of these positional reviews is to arm yourself with the conventional wisdom about fantasy positions and typically what is successful. There are always exceptions to every rule, but it is nice to know the rule in the first place. There is a surprising amount of consistency in the measureables of star players.

# Team 2009 Top Ten Ht. Wt. Age Exp.
1 GB Aaron Rodgers 6'2" 220 27 6
2 NO Drew Brees 6'0" 209 31 10
3 HOU Matt Schaub 6'5" 240 29 7
4 IND Peyton Manning 6'5" 230 34 13
5 MIN Brett Favre 6'2" 222 41 20
6 DAL Tony Romo 6'2" 226 30 8
7 NE Tom Brady 6'4" 225 33 11
8 PIT Ben Roethlisberger 6'5" 241 28 7
9 SD Philip Rivers 6'5" 228 29 7
10 NYG Eli Manning 6'4" 225 29 7
    Average Top 10 6'3" 227 31 9.6

Height - The average height of the best quarterbacks has actually declined and is led by the shortest of them all - Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. While Manning has long been considered the perfect size at 6'5", the reality is that is mostly about talent and the system.

Weight - Quarterbacks still weigh between 220 and 230 pounds with few exceptions - like Brees once again who is the lightweight in the group at only 209 pounds.

Age - Quarterbacks with around seven years of experience seem to be the most common top player. Old man Favre spiked the average age up from only seven years in 2009. No quarterback with less than six years of experience made the top list (though Rodgers had many years of doing nothing).

Drafted Team Name Ht. Wt. Age
1.01 STL Sam Bradford 6'4" 236 23
1.25 DEN Tim Tebow 6'3" 236 23
2.16 CAR Jimmy Clausen 6'3" 222 22
3.21 CLE Colt McCoy 6'3" 216 24
4.24 PHI Mike Kafka 6'3" 225 23
5.24 ARI John Skelton 6'6" 243 22
5.37 SD Jonathan Crompton 6'4" 222 23
6.07 TEN Rusty Smith 6'2" 224 23
6.12 CHI Dan LeFevour 6'3" 230 23
6.35 CAR Tony Pike 6'6" 223 24
7.02 BUF Levi Brown 6'4" 229 23
7.32 NO Sean Canfield 6'4" 223 24
7.43 NE Zac Robinson 6'1" 214 23

Rookies: This season seems unlikely to produce a starter for this year other than Sam Bradford in St. Louis. There's an outside chance that Tebow, Clausen or McCoy could get work but it would likely require injuries to starters to make it happen.
