Prediction: ARI 10, CAR 20

The Cardinals end their seven game losing streak thanks to the inept Broncos and now take their 1-5 road record to Carolina where they have their own seven game losing streak and are only 1-6 at home. Someone has to win this game. No one has to care.

Pregame Notes: The Cardinals not only ended their seven game losing streak, for once they looked like a balanced, capable team. The defense was outstanding and the offense was able to cover up the effects of starting a rookie quarterback for his first time. The final two games won't likely bode well but this week is the last chance to look like a competitive team again.

QUARTERBACK: HC Ken Whisenhunt said John Skelton will remain his starting quarterback and Derek Anderson still has not been cleared from his concussion. But Skelton's first game only had him complete 15 of 37 passes for 146 yards though he had no turnovers and was not sacked by the Broncos. The Cards also caught the Broncos at the best possible time which was fortunate. Skelton now gets start #2 against the worst team in the league so you have to admire his sense of timing.

Most teams rush against the Panthers but they can be thrown on. There is no way that Skelton is worth a fantasy start though regardless of the opponent.

RUNNING BACKS: Beanie Wells left the game last week because of the stomach flu but he's been a non factor really all year. Tim Hightower may be a fullback miscast as a starting running back but he is clearly the best that they have. Hightower comes off his best game of the season with 148 rushing yards and two scores on the Broncos.

The Cardinals go to Carolina where the Panthers have one of the worst rushing defenses and yet a decent secondary so expect Hightower to have at least a decent game here that could end up big again.

WIDE RECEIVERS: While Skelton managed to connect with Larry Fitzgerald for six catches and 72 yards last week, don't expect a repeat in Carolina where the cornerbacks are about the only good part of the defense. The Panthers have only allowed two touchdowns to opposing wideouts in Carolina all year and none had more than 79 yards. With a rookie quarterback on the road for the first time, figure this to be a down week for the Cardinals and Fitzgerald in particular.

TIGHT ENDS: No fantasy value.

Panthers Report | Statistics | Roster
CAROLINA vs ARI Rush Catch Pass
QB Jimmy Clausen - - 140
RB Mike Goodson 40,1 10 -
RB Jonathan Stewart 120,1 10 -
WR Brandon LaFell - 30 -
WR Steve Smith - 40 -
WR David Gettis - 30 -
PK John Kasay 2 FG 2 XP -

Pregame Notes: This is the final realistic shot at a win this year. With two road games coming up to PIT and ATL, this game is as good as it is going to get this year. And not only are the Cardinals a weak team anyway, but they are using an untested rookie quarterback and the Panthers are getting some return from their rushing game lately. This will be one of the rare times that a team is happy to be 2-12.

QUARTERBACK: The Panthers are sticking with Jimmy Clausen if only because there is no one else to turn to and Clausen is as good as it gets. And that is not good with only one touchdown pass in nine games and never over 200 passing yards. Even Steve Smith has complained but there is no one else so the passing game in Carolina will close out as almost certainly the worst in the NFL.

The Cardinals secondary is nothing special on the road but neither is Clausen. No reason to expect a Christmas miracle.

RUNNING BACKS: Jonathan Stewart has been much improved for three weeks now and hasn't gained less than 90 rush yards. He comes off a season high 133 yards on just 18 carries against the Panthers. Mike Goodson has also seen more use and has scored in each of those three games. Goodson has carved himself a role in the backfield and next year will see this same duo since DeAngelo Williams is almost certainly gone.

The Cardinals have one of the worst rushing defenses in the league and this is exactly where all the offense is going to happen like last week. Look for Stewart to be a nice start this week and even Goodson should provide some fantasy value as well.

WIDE RECEIVERS: No reason to over think it. With Clausen around this unit has no real value and rarely has any individual wideouts end up with more than about 40 or 50 yards. Of course none ever score. Steve Smith has not had a touchdown since week two and has been over 50 yards just once in the last six weeks.

TIGHT ENDS: No fantasy value.
