Prediction: NYG 24, WAS 17

The Giants can claim a wildcard with a win here and a loss by the Packers who host the Bears this week. This is a replay of just four weeks ago when the Giants won 31-7 in New York.

Pregame Notes: The Giants are having a tough time here at the end of the regular season losing close games on gaffes and getting blown out by the Packers all the while Eli Manning is throwing interceptions like candy from a parade float. The Giants are no road warriors with a 4-3 mark away from home. But even with recent struggles, the Giants crushed the Skins only four games ago. They lose this, they lose a head coach for sure.

QUARTERBACK: The scary part to this game is that Eli Manning has only failed to score in one of the last 11 games and that was against the Redskins when he threw for only 161 yards and no scores and one interception. Apparently that week set something off because he has thrown seven interceptions in just the last three games. Now the previous meeting with the Skins is when the rushing game went nuts which mitigates some but still he has been struggling in recent weeks when passing.

Now it appears that Hakeem Nicks is out this week and that greatly reduces the passing options though the Redskins secondary is very injury-ravaged and may be without CB DeAngelo Hall as well.

RUNNING BACKS: Ahmad Bradshaw has been out of practice resting his ankle but is expected to play this week. Bradshaw gashed the Redskins in week 13 when he ran for 97 yards and two scores on 27 carries and Brandon Jacobs had 103 yards and two scores on only eight runs. With the injuries to the receivers, the Giants are going to want to rely on the run as much as they can and it was greatly successful last time.

Expect lesser stats since this is a road game, but Bradshaw and even Jacobs are decent risks this week. Even if they only did half what they had a month ago it would be a good game.

WIDE RECEIVERS: Hakeem Nicks is dealing with a broken big toe on his left foot and HC Tom Coughlin said he did not expect Nicks to play this week. Mario Manningham has been practicing on a limited basis with hip and heel problems but should play. Neither Nicks nor Steve Smith played in that first meeting with the Skins so the results are not necessarily beyond hope. Derek Hagen gained 65 yards on seven catches in that game while Manningham was limited to just 36 yards on two catches. But DeAngelo Hall may be out and that is a big benefit to the passing effort.

TIGHT ENDS: Kevin Boss had no catches last week but he had been on a nice streak up until then. In the second half of the season, Boss has scored five times with decent yardage almost every week. One of his worst games was against the Redskins but that was because he was blocking for the monster game by the running backs. Boss should have at least decent yardage here and a chance for a score.

Redskins Report | Statistics | Roster
WASHINGTON vs NYG Rush Catch Pass
QB Rex Grossman - - 200,1
RB Ryan Torain 80,1 20 -
TE Chris Cooley - 50,1 -
WR Santana Moss - 50 -
WR Anthony Armstrong - 60 -
PK Graham Gano 2 FG 2 XP -

Pregame Notes: Mike Shanahan's first season as the head coach in Washington has been a mixed bag at best and a losing season. The team that started so strongly when no one knew what to expect now has been predictable and lost seven of their last nine games. This is a home game but the Skins are only 2-5 when at home. And so far about all the team has done on offense is determine who does not belong. This is much the same offense as last year.

QUARTERBACK: Rex Grossman was the new hot guy when he posted 30 points on the Cowboys and passed for 322 yards and four touchdowns like so many other teams have done. But last week in Jacksonville against a weaker secondary, Grossman was back to normal by throwing for only 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Grossman is back at home but will face his toughest matchup yet with the Giants secondary.

RUNNING BACKS: Back in the first meeting it was James Davis and Keiland Williams combing for 69 rush yards on 14 carries in a game that the Giants dominated. Ryan Torain has been largely effective - at least more so than any other Redskins back this year and he does have six touchdowns and three efforts over 100 rushing yards.

The Giants have a very good rushing defense but Torain should get enough work for at least a decent showing this week with a shot at one rushing score. The Giants are always weaker away from home anyway.

WIDE RECEIVERS: Santana Moss had his worst showing of the year when he only produced 24 yards on two catches in New York but Anthony Armstrong ended with his best game when he caught six passes for 97 yards and one touchdown. That was Armstrong's only score in the last 12 games and Moss bounced back to score three times in the three games since that matchup. Grossman has turned in one great game against the weak Dallas secondary and then had a bad game against the Jaguars who should have been bad. Have to assume that a desperate Giants secondary can step up.

TIGHT ENDS: Chris Cooley has been on a scoring drought with only one touchdown since week four but he posted a solid six catches for 61 yards in the previous Giants game and has been a bigger factor in recent games. I like Cooley to score here - if not Fred Davis - since the Skins want to work on involving the tight ends more.
