Prediction: KC 16, IND 24

Players to Watch: Curtis Painter

This game certainly comes off a lot differently than was initially thought - no Jamaal Charles or Peyton Manning? It means the 1-3 Chiefs come off their home win over the Vikings and travel to play in Indianapolis where the Colts are 0-4 and fresh off a short week getting punked in Tampa Bay last Monday. The Colts mantra going into the game has to be "If not now, when?" because the schedule is not going to serve up anything this easy for the rest of the year.

The Colts won 19-9 when the Chiefs visited in 2010.

Chiefs Report | Statistics | Roster
KANSAS CITY at SD Rush Catch Pass
QB Matt Cassel - - 190,1
RB Dexter McCluster 40 20 -
RB Thomas Jones 30 - -
TE Leonard Pope - 20 -
WR Steve Breaston - 60 -
WR Dwayne Bowe - 70,1 -
PK Ryan Succop 3 FG 1 XP -
Pregame Notes: Nice win over the Vikes last week even if it did require five field goals and one fortunate 52-yard touchdown by Dwayne Bowe - a win is a win is a win. And getting off the schneid heals a lot of things. Back on the road this week the Chiefs have a weakened opponent to be sure but one that will not take them lightly either like the Chargers did. The bye follows this matchup and gives the Chiefs more time to figure out how to improve a No-Charles offense.

QUARTERBACK: Matt Cassel comes off a 260 yard, one touchdown effort over the Vikings but in all previous games he was held well below 200 yards and only has four touchdowns on the season. Then again - his passes are the only offensive touchdowns.

Cassel passed for 156 yards and no scores on the Colts last year. But the 2011 Colts have allowed exactly one passing touchdown per opponent and over 200 yards every game. No matter - Cassel is never a safe start this year and anything above an average game would be a surprise on the road against a desperate Colts team.

RUNNING BACKS: This situation just gets worse. Thomas Jones is the de facto primary back but he only averages 2.8 yards per carry and has never gained more than 40 yards in any game. Dexter McCluster is the best fantasy back here but even that has been no better than 50 or so total yards and four or five receptions tops. Now even Jackie Battle is getting five carries a game.

This is just a situation to avoid since it is now split into three and haws never scored a rushing touchdown this year. This should be a lock to remain the #32 rushing team in the league.

WIDE RECEIVERS: It is hard to fathom how Dwayne Bowe has managed to maintain decent fantasy value every week when none of the rest of the offense is working. He has scored in both of the most recent games and has two 100 yard efforts on the year. Steve Breaston even had 91 yards last week in Minnesota but has been much less productive in other games. This is an offense with only four touchdowns so not much here to distribute.

Bowe only managed two catches for 33 yards in Indy last year. He remains a viable start if only at the end of decided games or just one fortunate pass play that goes his way and he scores. But in Indy, no other wideout has fantasy relevance.

The first round draft pick Jonathan Baldwin is practicing some now as he returns from his broken hand but the Chiefs have not set a date when they intend to start playing him.

TIGHT ENDS: Leonard Pope does have one touchdown on the year (a quarter of the team total) but he never has more than two or three meaningless catches. No reason to consider him for even a fantasy spot start.

Colts Report | Statistics | Roster
INDIANAPOLIS vs KC Rush Catch Pass
QB Curtis Painter - - 210,1
RB Delone Carter 30,1 - -
RB Joseph Addai 60,1 10 -
TE Dallas Clark - 30 -
WR Reggie Wayne - 70,1 -
WR Austin Collie - 20 -
WR Pierre Garcon - 50 -
PK Adam Vinatieri 1 FG 3 XP -

Pregame Notes: The Colts lost, again, but at least they made it a close game on the road against a good Buccaneers team. Sadly even more defenders were injured and DT Eric Foster is probably out for the year with a broken fibula. The Colts defensive line has suffered numerous injuries that is not going to help stopping the run or pressuring the quarterback. The Colts need to win this game and "if not now, when?". And it not only just gets harder, but the Colts keep losing players along the way.

QUARTERBACK: The debut of Curtis Painter did not produce a win, but it had to be considered a positive when he passed for 281 yards and two scores with no interceptions. Kerry Collins never had more than 197 yards and one score in any game as a Colt. Granted he only completed 13 of 30 and 146 of the yards and both scores came on just two passes to Pierre Garcon. But it kept the Colts in the game and at least gives some hope that the team can start to turn around.

Peyton Manning only passed for 244 yards and no scores on the Chiefs last season.

The Chiefs secondary already allowed ten touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks and even last week gave up two scores to Donovan McNabb. It is still too early to expect more than an average game from Painter though the Chiefs on the road have been kind to quarterbacks.

RUNNING BACKS: No changes to the running backs with Painter under center. Joseph Addai rushed 11 times for 41 yards and added just one catch for seven yards. Delone Carter alternated series with him and turned in seven runs for 21 yards. Addai had the hot hand when the Steelers visited and gained 86 yards and one score in that home game.

The Colts rushed for 100 yards and one score on the Chiefs last year.

Good chance that the Colts will have success rushing since the Chiefs have already allowed six touchdowns to the position and both road games had them allow two rushing scores to both the Lions and Chargers. The yardage is going to be split up here but there is a decent shot at both running backs scoring this week.

WIDE RECEIVERS: With Painter as the starter, the results were no worse than with Collins and while he had several bad throws, he did have a few genuinely good strikes. Pierre Garcon only caught two passes but they went for 87 and 59 yard touchdowns. One was a bad play by the corner that allowed him free running down the sideline and the other was a screen play where the Buccaneers seemed to try to only look like they were attempting to tackle him. Reggie Wayne only ended with four catches for 59 yards. Worse yet, Austin Collie was left with only two catches for 16 yards. But overall it was encouraging if only compared to Kerry Collins.

No wideout scored or had more than 75 yards on the Chiefs last year.

You cannot rely on the long, lucky pass play so expect moderate yardage. I like the one passing score to end up with a wideout or a tight end so little confidence in who has that. It is premature to expect Garcon to repeat last week in any way.

TIGHT ENDS: Dallas Clark ended his first game with Painter with just three catches for 46 yards but spent most of his time blocking, The Colts lost LT Anthony Castonzo to an ankle injury last week and and the line already had injury woes. That's likely to continue and Clark ends up blocking more than he needed to in years past.
