2003 NFL Preview -- Mid-Season Revision
by Bob Cunningham
October 31, 2003

I've always insisted that making preseason predictions for the NFL is essentially a waste of time, but it appears that I'm going out of my way to prove that theory this year.

As several of you have already taken the time to point out to me, many of my August prognostications are in dire need of revision. Among the teams I completely missed the boat on at the end of the summer were Kansas City, Green Bay, Dallas, Carolina and Minnesota.

Ah, but that's what midway points are for. We're roughly halfway through the season, so there's no better time for me to take a stab at re-doing my forecast. I promise I'll do better this time.

AFC EAST
AUGUST PREVIEW PICKS:
1. Miami 12-4; 2. New England 10-6, 3. Buffalo 9-7, 4. New York Jets 7-9.
MY REVISED PICKS:
1. Miami 12-4; New England 10-6, 3. Buffalo 9-7, 4. New York Jets 5-11.
COMMENT: I probably had this division pegged better than any other. I'm still a huge fan of the Miami defense.

AFC NORTH
AUGUST PREVIEW PICKS:
1. Pittsburgh 10-6, 2. Baltimore 9-7, 3. Cleveland 7-9, 4. Cincinnati 5-11.
MY REVISED PICKS:
1. Baltimore 9-7, 2. Pittsburgh 8-8, 3. Cleveland 7-9, 4. Cincinnati 7-9.
COMMENT: Yeah, I know. I'm stubborn. But I firmly believe the Steelers will rally, although they will fall far short of making the playoffs. Cincy is much improved, but it's not a winner just yet.

AFC SOUTH
AUGUST PREVIEW PICKS:
1. Indianapolis 10-6, 2. Tennessee 10-6, 3. Jacksonville 6-10, 4. Houston 3-13.
MY REVISED PICKS:
1. Tennessee 12-4, 2. Indianapolis 11-5, 3. Houston 5-11, 4. Jacksonville 3-13.
COMMENT: I like the Titans to win their rematch with Indy at home and edge the Colts for division honors. Both will make the playoffs.

AFC WEST
AUGUST PREVIEW PICKS:
1. Denver 10-6, 2. Oakland 9-7, 3. San Diego 8-8, 4. Kansas City 7-9.
MY REVISED PICKS:
1. Kansas City 13-3, 2. Denver 9-7, 3. Oakland 7-9, 4. San Diego 4-12.
COMMENT: OK, so I was a ways off in the beginning. I dare anyone to tell me they thought KC would be 8-0 heading into its bye week.

AFC Championship Game Preview Pick:
Miami over Indianapolis
My Revised Pick:
Miami over Kansas City
COMMENT: This is the year the Dolphins shock the world and win a road playoff game... the AFC Title Game at Arrowhead Stadium. It's all about the defense. Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil will definitely be crying after this one.

NFC EAST
AUGUST PREVIEW PICKS:
1. New York Giants 10-6, 2. Philadelphia 9-7, 3. Dallas 6-10, 4. Washington 5-11.
MY REVISED PICKS:
1. Philadelphia 10-6, 2. Dallas 9-7, 3. New York Giants 9-7, 4. Washington 6-10.
COMMENT: While I admit I grossly underrated the Cowboys, I contend they'll return to Earth and miss the playoffs. Philly's defense propels the Eagles.

NFC NORTH
AUGUST PREVIEW PICKS:
1. Green Bay 12-4, 2. Minnesota 8-8, 3. Chicago 5-11, 4. Detroit 4-12.
MY REVISED PICKS:
1. Minnesota 12-4, 2. Green Bay 9-7, 3. Chicago 5-11, 4. Detroit 3-13.
COMMENT: I'm certainly guilty of underestimating Green Bay's troubles on defense at the season's outset. The Pack will win more often than not but this division clearly belongs to the Vikes. Amazing.

NFC SOUTH
AUGUST PREVIEW PICKS:
1. Tampa Bay 11-5, 2. New Orleans 9-7, 3. Atlanta 8-8, 4. Carolina 6-10.
MY REVISED PICKS:
1. Tampa Bay 10-6, 2. Carolina 10-6, 3. New Orleans 7-9, 4. Atlanta 4-12.
COMMENT: I'm just not convinced the Panthers have enough complimetntary attributes to Stephen Davis to win the division or go beyond the wild-card round of the playoffs. The Champs persevere. I guess Michael Vick's injury affected the Falcons more than I anticipated, eh?

NFC WEST
AUGUST PREVIEW PICKS:
1. St. Louis 12-4, 2. Seattle 9-7, 3. San Francisco 9-7, 4. Arizona 3-13.
MY REVISED PICKS:
1. St. Louis 11-5, 2. Seattle 10-6, 3. San Francisco 8-8, 4. Arizona 4-12.
COMMENT: If the Rams can start winning with consistency on the road, and coach Mike Martz doesn't screw up too much, they'll unseat Tampa Bay. Seahawks make the playoffs... barely.

NFC Championship Game Preview Pick:
Green Bay over St. Louis
My Revised Pick:
St. Louis over Tampa Bay
COMMENT: If my divisional scenario plays out, the Bucs would have to win at Minnesota and at St. Louis in consecutive weeks to return to the Super Bowl. Won't happen.

SUPER BOWL XXXVIII PREVIEW PICK:
Miami 24, Green Bay 20
MY REVISED PICK:
Miami 24, St. Louis 20
COMMENT: A Florida-based, defense-oriented team wins the world championship of pro football for the second year in a row. A double-dip for the Dolphins and baseball's Florida Marlins. The game will be at Houston's Reliant Stadium, on grass. If it were on artificial turf, especially in a dome, I'd go with the Rams.
