Game Prediction: JAX 17, IND 23
The Jaguars fall to 0-2 with their 17-38 loss to the Bills
and much of the gains seen in week one did not translate into
week two.
After opening with 272 yards and two scores against the Panthers,
Mark Brunell only had 122 yards passing and one rushing score
against the Bills though he left the game with a sore back.
Byron Leftwich replaced him at the end of the game and threw
7 of 8 for 92 yards and one trash-time touchdown. Brunell
is expected to be good to play this week.
Fred Taylor rushed for 71 yards on 14 carries for a five
yard average but was not used much since the Jaguars trailed
by 14 points or more after the second quarter. Jacksonville
was unable to hit their wideouts in the game and Cortez Hankton
led the receivers with only three catches for 42 yards. This
team needs Jimmy Smith back.
Kyle Brady had five catches for 42 yards and fellow tight
end George Wrighster scored the passing touchdown.
The revamped defense of the Jaguars was picked apart by Drew
Bledsoe and gave up 314 yards passing. They were able to shut
down Travis Henry's running until the Billsa reached the goalline
when Henry had three rushing scores.
Jacksonville took Carolina by surprise in week one but still
allowed the Panthers to mount a comeback and beat the Jaguars.
Last week, Jacksonville looked more like expectations - an
offense that sputtered and a defense that could be great only
in one area of focus at time.
Jermaine Lewis is now lost for the season with a torn ACL
last week. The Jaguars are working out JaJuan Dawson and Robert
Baker this week as potential replacements.
The defense has also lost LB Keith Mitchell with a neck injury.
DB Kiwaukee Thomas (groin) and LB Eric Westmoreland (Strained
MCL) may miss this week as well. DB James Trapp may return
from his ankle injury.
The Colts are 2-0 and while the offense is finally catching
up, the defense is second to only Tampa Bay in points allowed
this season (13).
Peyton Manning Is still far behind his normal numbera but
finally threw a touchdown last week thanks to Marvin Harrison's
ability to make magic catches in the endzone. After opening
with only 67 yards rushing in Cleveland, Edgerrin James looked
back to form with a 30 carry, 120 yard effort against the
Titans with one score.
The passing offense has not yet taken off and Marvin Harrison
still only has 103 yards receiving for the season. Reggie
Wayne is even worse with only 61 yards on the year. Defenses
are keying on not allowing Harrison to get deep and he has
12 short catches to prove it. Last week rookie TE Dallas Clark
actually led all receivers with four catches for 63 yards.
Brandon Stokley is still unsure if he will be ready to play
this week.
Last year the Colts beat the Jaguars in the first and final
games of the 2002 regular season. This year's edition of the
Jaguars is still missing Jimmy Smith in the passing game and
the Colts have been outstanding against the rush. Look for
Manning to get back on track against a secondary that has
been burned two weeks in a row.
