Game Prediction: ARZ 14, STL 31
The Cardinals come off a thrilling win over the sweating
Packers who could not stand the heat nor the Arizona secondary
for all four quarters.
Jeff Blake threw for 273 yards and one touchdown in
his return from the heel injury that forced him from the Seattle
game. Anquan Boldin had five grabs for 99 yards in
the game and is locked down in the spot regardless of how
well Larry Foster recuperates. With Bryan Gilmore as the other
phantom starting receiver that never plays, Bryant Johnson
took his place and turned in a nice six catch, 86 yard day.
By the time Larry Foster and Bryan Gilmore
are able to play, they will probably become familiar with
the name of Wally Pip. Lose a starting job because of injury?
Why not when their replacements include the hottest rookie
receiver to ever start a season?
While Emmitt Smith may be getting older, he still
gained 50 yards on 20 carries in the blistering heat while
Marcel Shipp (7-24) continues to supply nothing more
than an occasional change of pace.
With the win, the Cardinals are now tied for second in the
division but that also means that they are in a three way
tie for the cellar. Perhaps the heat did in the Packers or
maybe it was that the Cardinals are improving. More than likely,
it was that the motivated Cardinals met the unmotivated Packers
on a very hot day and managed to take the all too rare win.
The Rams fall to 1-2 on a heartbreaking loss to the Seahawks
that ruins the notion that Bulger always wins his games.
St. Louis actually led 23-10 starting the fourth quarter
but allowed Matt Hasselbeck to get hot and score twice to
take the win in the final minute.
Marc Bulger threw for only 226 yards and one touchdown
but added a rushing score to balance out the fact he tossed
two interceptions. He threw for 21 of 34 and most importantly
made Kurt Warner seem even more like old news. Bulger is an
equal opportunity employer as well. In two games as a starter,
he has split throws between Isaac Bruce (11-132, 1
TD) and Torry Holt (11-132, 1 TD).
The story in the game was the loss of Marshall Faulk
for the next month or more after breaking the fourth and fifth
metacarpal bones in his left hand. He'll be replaced by Lamar
Gordon who now looks like a much shrewder fantasy draft
pick than a week ago. Gordon ran for 41 yards on eight carries
against the Seahawks and added four catches for 25 yards in
his best impression of Faulk.
While Bulger may have only started eight games in his career,
this week will be his third meeting with Arizona. Look for
Lamar Gordon to have a good rushing game while Marc
Bulger racks up some good yardage to keep his stats high
after last weeks lesser effort. The Cardinals are still giddy
about their win but they were swept by the Rams last season
and there is no chance of St. Louis wanting to go into their
week five bye at 1-3.
