Game Prediction:
CHI 20, KC 34
This game could take two different turns depending on earlier
games. The Chiefs will already know if the Patriots won on
Saturday and if New England goes to 14-2 on the season, the
Chiefs have nothing to win. That could end up causing some
players to take it easier in the game though it is a certainty
that Holmes will pursue the touchdown record.
After last week, the Chiefs need a big win to propel them
into the playoffs.
Chicago Notes
The Bears rise to 7-8 and have won their second game in a
row. They have a shot at a .500 season which is most notable
because it is not a losing record. Semantics perhaps, but
important to coaches on the hot seat.
Rex Grossman showed very nice development in only
his second start. He threw for 249 yards and two scores against
the Washington secondary. He threw an interception and on
the next offensive play tossed a 59 yard touchdown to Marty
Booker over the head of Champ Bailey. "You're not
so bad! You're not so bad!" (Rocky II).
Besides the nice pass to Booker, Grossman connected with
Justin Gage for another touchdown and threw completions
to all six of the Bear wideouts. It was a solid effort that
left the coaches impressed. Both Dez White and Justin
Gage suffered sprained MCL's in the game and are not expected
to play this week.
Grossman's passing allowed even more rushing room for Anthony
Thomas who ended with a season best 141 yards rushing with
one touchdown. That was Thomas' fourth 100 yard game this
season and sixth touchdown.
Match against the Defense:
The Bears are still motivated to win with a .500 season in
sight and HC Dick Jauron looking any additional reasons to
keep him around next year so he never has to take off his
baseball cap.
The Chiefs' CB Eric Warfield is doubtful to play this week
after injuring his back against the Vikings and that means
a replacement gets to cover Marty Booker which could spell
good things. The Chiefs have allowed at least one passing
score over the past seven games though almost all quarterbacks
have remained around 220 yards passing.
The big key will be Anthony Thomas who will face the worst
rush defense in the league. The only reason he will fall below
100 rushing yards is if the Chefs score so quickly and often
to start the game that the Bears never run.
Kansas City Notes
The Chiefs fall to 12-3 and may have lost the final homefield
advantage over the 13-2 Patriots. The loss to the Vikings
led to fights in the showerroom after the game and beyond
friendly towel-snapping. The Chiefs defense was so readily
shredded that their confidence is shaken and stirred.
Trent Green only completed 18 of 38 passes last week
for 224 yards and no scores - his first game without a touchdown
since week seven. He returns home this week where he had thrown
for two or three scores in four of the last five games and
over 240 yards in his last four games.
Priest Holmes looked like he was going to bet blanked
until the second half in Minnesota when he knocked in three
rushing scores. He only had 55 yards on 18 carries in the
game but has now tied Emmitt Smith's single game record of
25 rushing touchdowns and is one touchdown from tying Marshall
Faulk's 26 total touchdowns. The Chiefs will give Holmes every
opportunity to surpass those marks against a defense that
has allowed rushing scores much of the season.
Last week Tony Gonzalez had five catches for 65 yards
but did not score. He enters the final week with ten touchdowns.
Match against the Defense: The
Bears have allowed at least one passing score in six of the
seven road games this season though no quarterback has thrown
for over 238 yards. The Chiefs will be using the pass to setup
the touchdown for Holmes and the most likely candidate for
that one passing score is, of course, Gonzalez. Chicago has
given up six tight end scores already this season.
Chicago was allowing runners to score almost every game in
the first half of the season but only Ahman Green has scored
on them since week nine. That is an accomplishment since Chicago
has played against most of the best runners this season -
Faulk, Portis, Green, Alexander and of course Onterrio Smith.
