Vick (3). Waiting on WR's made his first as Boston (4)
and then instead of taking his WR2, went for Gonzalez
(5) and later Jimmy Smith (6). Ended up with a top defense
in CAR (9) and Feeley (12) for a kicker. This worked out
well for this draft slot, getting difference makers at
both RBs, QB, TE and DEF and the only hole it may have
left was in WR where almost all receivers are coming off
bad (for them) seasons except for the risk play of Charles
Rogers(10) and afterthought Antonio Bryant (16). Great
depth in all non-WR positions and with six receivers to
choose from, should at least be okay in that area. This
would be one of the early contenders, no doubt. |

RB - RB - WR - TE - WR
Plan Grade: B+ |
Like most #2 teams in a ten man
league, this plan worked out well too though less so than
team #1 to me. After Portis (1), missed out on Davis and
settled for Curtis Martin (2) which may be fine but there
is a bit more risk. For his third pick, snapped Torry
Holt for WR1 and was able to reach Shockey (4) for a nice
start. Waiting on a QB until the 8th round may work out
okay since Green (8) or Pennington (10) could be fine
but there is a bit more risk involved. The second pick
in the draft only ended up with three main difference
makers in Portis, Holt and Shockey but decent depth in
QB, RB and WR will allow team management to either keep
the team up or bring it down. A good team but not a great
team to me, decision to go with Martin at the #2 seemed
to have missed opportunities to get other stars from other
positions and while taking Shockey was a coup, waited
a bit long on that QB considering the points it scores
and the difference a top one can make in a smaller league. |

RB - RB - QB - WR - WR
Plan Grade: B |
Pretty standard plan that worked
out fairly well. After getting Williams (1) and Taylor
(2), went ahead and took Culpepper (3) for three high
point potential starters. Fourth pick went naturally for
a WR and he claimed Price who was the #14 WR taken. That
is a risky move but probably a decent risk in order to
gain a top WR at least in potential. Later drafted Bruce
(5) and Rice (7) which will provide stable numbers in
case Price does not pan out or is slow to start. Liked
the McMichael (9) pick and waited on his defense until
all starters were gone. This plan worked fairly well for
the draft slot, managed to get Culpepper, Williams and
Taylor which should provide a high-powered nucleus for
the team but will need the rest of the starters to rise
up in order to become a top team. |

RB - WR - RB - WR
- RB
Plan Grade: B+ |
You have to love how
this started - Holmes and then Moss(2) but then took the
#18 RB in Garner when he could have had McNabb or Moulds.
In doing so, he returned to WR for his #4 pick and received
great value with Chad Johnson for a very nice set of starting
WR. Used his #5 pick on Staley but still could have had
other RBs in the 6th to 8th round with the same risk/reward.
Got away with the move by landing Warner in the 6th. Also
grabbed MIA (8) for a nice set of starters. While I did
not like the Garner or the Staley pick, he pretty much
got away with it and with Warner, Holmes, Moss and MIA
could have a tremendous set of starters each week. He
gambled and won, or at least got lucky in the way players
fell. |

RB - RB - WR - QB - WR
Plan Grade: A |
This slot plan is perfect for
this pick. After getting McAlister (1) and Lewis (2),
still managed to get Moulds (3) and Manning (4) who fell.
Returned to WR for his #5 and still got Booker. In the
course of five rounds, managed to get the top 5 scoring
positions filled with either bonafide studs or solid #2
players. Great backups in Dunn (6) and Gardner (8) while
sneaking in a nice tight end in Pollard (7). Also took
PHI (9) to create a very nice team. Good depth in all
positions with the slant towards the highest scoring ones.
I like the 5 spot in a ten man league so far the best. |

6 |
RB - RB - WR - WR - QB
Plan Grade: A |
This spot gets the same benefits
of the previous team. Starting out with Faulk and Ahman
Green (2), snatched Robinson (3) and then Mason (4) and
yet still could get Gannon (5) for a nice and potentially
explosive set of starters in the best scoring position.
Pulled Franks (8) and BAL (9) to round out the weekly
crew. Very solid backups in all positions though as in
most cases deep WR are likely a waste of roster spots.
This team essentially followed the #5 lead, except for
swapping QB and WR in the 4th and 5th rounds. Very solid
with good potential to be an immediate contender. |

RB - WR - RB - WR - WR
Plan Grade: C |
After Alexander, team landed Owens
(2) and then went for the natural play of George (3).
Getting Owens is a benefit to be sure, but his RB2 may
make him pay for it if George acts his age. The backup
RBs of Mack (8) and Antowain Smith (9) are likely not
players you want to rely on if George does get hurt. Spent
his #4 and #5 on WR with good value of Driver (4) and
Jackson (5) but in taking Jackson and then Stallworth
(6), decided to get two backup WR before his first RB
backup. Tight end and defense were left for much later
as well while team focused on four WR and then two deep
"middling" RBs with risks. Landed a great QB
value in Hasselbeck (7) but his starters each week could
have been stronger and the depth at WR cost him more than
it should have |

8 |
RB - RB - WR - WR - QB
Plan Grade: B+ |
This strategy seems prudent and
it is hard to bypass two running backs in those first
picks. Took Edge (1) as a calculated risk and then Henry
(2) to make a potentially powerful backfield. Drafting
this late allowed him Burress (3) but then down to Toomer
(4) for his next WR. Though he waited on QB, he clearly
got value with Favre (5) and then Garcia (6) and later
added TB (7), Akers (12) and a decent shot guy for TE
in Crumpler (10). Not particularly fond of his backup
RB in Canidate and the stolen Gordon and was able to wait
until late to get Rhodes (16) who may - or may not - be
the right backup RB for Edge. Admittedly, hardly any of
his players are "my kind of guys" but he did
extract decent value early and went beefy on the lesser
positions of TE, DEF and PK. If Edgerrin gets hurt or
does not return as he seems to be doing, then this team
will struggle but a strong performance by James and Favre,
Henry and Toomer delivering similar performances to 2002
will make him a contender. |

9 |
WR - RB - WR - RB - QB
Plan Grade: A- |
Probably his spot helped him on
this draft strategy, but you have to like how the players
fell to him and how he was able to make several very strong
strategic picks. Started with Harrison (1) and Dillon
(2), then went back to Horn(3) to lock up his WR starters
with top notch players. This made him fall back in the
RB tiers to only James Stewart (4), but he later added
Hambrick (8) and Emmitt (10) and between those three should
manage to produce at least an adequate RB2 each week.
Grabbed Heap (5) before the Big 3 TE's were gone and then
lucked into Brooks (6) as a QB. Considering his decision
to delay getting two RBs, appears to have gotten away
with it and has a solid team that can score top points
many weeks. Only problem may be the strengths lie in all
positions except RB and that could turn into a less consistent
team that sometimes scores the highest in the league,
followed by some low weeks. |

10 |
RB - RB - WR - QB - RB
Plan Grade: B |
Built his team almost opposite
from team 9, he grabbed William Green (1) and Barber (2)
to set up his RBs immediately, then got a high tier WR
in Ward (3) and still reached McNabb (4) for a very nice
1-2-3-4. After that, team backed up RBs with both Bettis
(5) and Zereoue (8) and Porter (6) and Chambers (7). Waited
on TE and PK but GB (9) for a defense. While he did manage
to get some good value picks when players fell to the
back of their tier (McNabb, Ward), will need some breakout
performances from Green, Porter and Jolley to reach the
upper levels of scoring each week. Team was thoughtfully
put together, but at the end could only react to the end
of tiers instead of starting runs and getting top talent
in any position. Has the look of a good but never great
team. |
* Review of the strategy of positional picks with a bit of
my own wisdom/plain old prejudice.
