Draft Slot Analysis |

RB-RB-WR-WR-WR
Plan Grade: B - |
Started out with the standard
LT pick then opted for Eddie George and Eric Moulds at
the 2/3 turn. Passed on all QBs except for Vick (snicker)
and used the 4/5 to gain more depth at WR with Isaac Bruce
and Jimmy "sniffy" Smith (good thing he missed
Vick) who was later suspended for 4 weeks. Took Heap with
his 6th pick which was probably a mistake in a league
that does not require a TE since he passed on Lelie, Morgan,
Wayne and several other WRs that will likely score more
points. Perfect timing on grabbing Trent Green in the
7th before a mini-run started though personally I preferred
Hasselbeck there. Taking that 3rd WR before his 3rd RB
meant that he passed on Dunn, Hambrick and the like and
then waiting until the 9th round to get that RB3 left
him with Duckett ( a nice grab at that point) and Davenport
who has minimal value. This strategy produced a nice set
of starters but fairly unreliable backups in every position.
Biggest knock is waiting on RB3 for so long. |

RB-WR-WR-RB-RB
Plan Grade: A - |
Started out great with Portis
and then went for the WR-WR ploy at his 2/3 gaining solid
WRs with Robinson and Burress for a very nice start. Smart
move was to fall back to RBs the next two picks and with
James Stewart and Warrick Dunn to use the two interchangeably
for his RB2. Later took McNair as his QB (7) and immediately
backup his WR with Travis Taylor (6). I would have preferred
some slightly different names at a few of the starting
spots but overall, this plan worked out pretty well with
solid starting WR, Portis and a duo for RB2 and safe McNair
for his QB. It works but I would have rather seen a few
more sleeper types later on than older guys like Galloway,
Schroeder and McCardell. |

RB-RB-WR-WR-WR
Plan Grade: A |
Had a great start with Ricky Williams
and then still reaching Jamal Lewis (2) for a very nice
RB pair. Grabbed Horn (3) and then Stallworth (4) which
is a little questionable considering they play for the
same team but still added Rod Smith (5) and Morgan (6)
for a solid set of four WR. Reached Hasselbeck (7) and
Plummer (10) for a nice upside pair taken so late. Antowain
Smith (8) is a little weal for a RB3 but got him pretty
late anyway. Wheatley is a throw away probably. Loved
taking the Dolphins (9). Ended up with a squad strong
and deep in all positions other than RB, but had such
a great first two he could end up with a very strong contender.
This worked out very well for him. |

RB-RB-WR-WR-WR
Plan Grade: B + |
Evidently liked Team 3's game
plan and it worked out about as well. Took Alexander (1)
as a safer pick than Faulk or Holmes but what he loses
in high end potential he makes up for in a higher floor
for his RB1. Reached Dillon (2) and then went after WRs
netting Price (3), Conway(4) and Chambers (5). Still reached
Favre (7) and Brady (10) just like Team 3. This plan worked
about as well, but is downgraded from having less strong
backup WRs and RBs. The Strategy did work though for the
drafter who "drafted" behind Team 3 and got
similar results, just not quite as attractive backups
in my opinion but obviously they were in his guys. |

RB-QB-RB-WR-RB
Plan Grade: C |
This is the all "cross your
fingers" team partially beyond his control. Took
Marshall Faulk (1) who had fallen in most people's perspective
and then was "the one" that got burned with
Vick at the 2.07 pick. Personally, given that no QBs had
been taken yet I would have thought that aggressive anyway.
Third pick wisely went back to RBs and got Stacey Mack
(3) ahead of Curtis Martin which seems also aggressive.
Landed Porter (4) as his WR1 and then returned to get
Hambrick as his RB3 later adding Emmitt Smith (8) for
four starting running backs of which three are likely
average at best and one could be great or just injured
when you really need him. Took Kevin Johnson (6) and then
made some very nice upside WR picks in Lelie (7), Finneran
(9) and Boerigter (11). Defenses were backburnered and
shows with only SEA and DEN. Even disregarding the Vick
fiasco not his fault, this was a very aggressively assembled
team that has a shot at being great only if it hits on
all cylinders and several players significantly exceed
expectations. Taking a QB so early put him behind in RBs
and WRs and though a good job was done on getting a mixture,
it still looks more like a team destined to .500 or less
unless Vick comes back and makes a big difference and
Faulk returns to form. |

RB-RB-QB-WR-WR
Plan Grade: B - |
Started out Holmes who had fallen
pretty far and then nabbed Garner (2) which looked good
but together they qualify for social security. McNabb
(3) was a great pick and then widely went after WRs heavy,
getting Booker (4), Gardner (5), Rogers (6) and Josh Reed
(7) which as a group should always provide two decent
starters. Liked the CAR defense (8) and even went early
to get a top PK (11). This worked out reasonably well
for his starting crew, but his "best guess"
backup of Holmes could well be wrong and Toefield has
real value mainly to the Taylor guy, not as a potential
backup RB which, technically, this team has none. Harrington
as a backup to McNabb is also pretty weak. This is a team
that could produce great games with solid starters but
bye weeks or injuries will kill this team. I liked the
initial plan of five, but not nearly as much where he
went after that. |

RB-RB-QB-WR-WR
Plan Grade: B + |
The vaunted 7 spot that has done
so well - let's see here. Took McAllister as final Tier
One RB, grabbed Taylor (2) as a risky upside RB2, then
still netted Manning (3) and reached Coles (4) and Darrell
Jackson (5). Solid and unspectacular backups in all positions
deals some strength of depth. The only real downgrade
to this plan is that it resulted in WRs that will have
to be mixed and matched deftly each week and I did not
like taking the risk on Taylor when Lewis or Dillon was
still available. Still, pretty solid draft all in all
but a team that would require some good management to
succeed. |

RB-WR-RB-WR-WR
Plan Grade: A - |
This team faced the big decision
this year - use the 1.08 on either the best WR (Harrison)
or take a chance that Edgerrin James can return to 2000
form and make us forget the past two years. He rolled
the dice with Edge and then landed Randy Moss (2) and
even Curtis Martin (3). Toomer (4) and Rice (5) added
nice depth to WR and though I did not care for the rest
of the WR, there are many who would like them so they
are fine. Got Anthony Thomas (7) and tried to backup James
with Rhodes (11) which is smart except this year his backup
could be one of four different RBs and very likely not
Rhodes due to injury. Eagles (8) gave him a great defense
and taking Warner (6) is yet another risk pick but Brad
Johnson is a solid fallback if needed. Thanks to a few
players falling, this strategy actually worked as long
as risk is not bothersome. If Warner and James return
to form - this is a monster team. If not, it will only
be average. I give it the high grade on nice backups where
he needed it most and a good set of starters - at least
it seems that way now before the season starts. |
| 9 |
WR-RB-WR-WR-RB
Plan Grade: C |
With all Tier one RBs gone, wisely
nabbed Harrison (1) and then still reached Henry (2) before
filling out WRs with Holt (3) and Mason (4). Waiting on
RB2 yielded Canidate (5) and Alstott (8) which are weak
or at least questionable. Took Garcia (6) and thankfully
tapped Collins (9) for a good duo. Did not like WAS or
CLE for defenses and there is no true RB2 on the team.
Tough spot to draft from, this strategy would have looked
a little better with Hambrick, Dunn or James Stewart than
Mason with the 5th pick and not put him quite so far behind
trying to make up ground at the end of runs. As it ended
up, probably could have been stronger with WR-RB-WR-RB
and then WR or QB. The 5th pick dug a slight hole but
was in the midst of a huge WR run and that may have impacted
the decision. It is normally not a good idea to take a
WR3 before a RB2 and that caused the lower grade. |

WR-RB-WR-RB-QB
Plan Grade: A + |
Opted to get Owens (1) and then
reached Ahman Green (2) on the wrap back. Got a nice value
with Chad Johnson (3) though most would have taken Boston
or Driver. I think the pick is fine myself - nice upside
and already had Owens for the stable WR. Wisely went back
to RB with his 4th and got Onterrio Smith earlier than
I have seen him ever go but as it worked out, not really
that bad and he already had two WRs while all the other
teams were draining that pool in the 4th. Took Brooks
(5) and got Kitna (11) for a nice set of QBs. I loved
the Andre Johnson (6) pick and Bates (9) is a decent,
solid player. Was the "TB" guy taking them early
in the 6th and Akers in the 10th. Was able to get Hearst
(7) AND Barlow (8). This team is not quite as strong looking
as perhaps teams 2 and 3, but this is about as well as
I have seen the 10th spot deliver. Consider he has the
#2 WR, #1 PK, #1 DEF, a solid QB situation and enough
RBs to throw two decent ones out every week. Bold picks
on some like Onterrio Smith and Chad Johnson but sometimes
that is what making a winning team is about. Even considering
that I absolutely hated the Pollard and Franks pick, I
like the way the plan worked out in a very tough spot
to draft from this season. This team should be solid and
could be very good and one that surprises. Even if it
fails, it was put together boldly and with both good forethought
and luck. Thumbs up for the 10th spot for once. |

QB-RB-WR-WR-RB
Plan Grade: C - |
This strategy was interesting.
Starting out with Culpepper (1) which I view as too early,
gained William Green (2) as a nice upside grab. Followed
that with Hines Ward (3) and Driver (4) and finally went
back for RB2 which yielded Buckhalter (5). Later added
Keyshawn Johnson (6) for a solid backup WR and was fortunate
to still find Bettis (7) and Staley (8) for RB depth.
Waited too long on a backup QB in Blake (15) and the rest
of the receivers of Kennison (9), Bryant (13) and McMichael
have little upside. Defenses and kickers are fine. The
problem with this team is that it looks more like last
year's team than this season's. Bettis, Staley, Ward and
Driver all need to post better than expected numbers to
keep this team going. This plan fails because taking a
QB in the first round meant that every other pick was
making up ground after runs started. I understand what
the team was trying to do, but the best available players
in the positions he needed were almost always about a
round behind where he needed to be when he took them.
This is a good example of the problems created in taking
that QB in the first round. |

RB-RB-WR-QB-WR
Plan Grade: B - |
The swinger in the league started
out with the standard RB-RB ploy, gaining nice, solid
picks in Barber (1) and Stephen Davis (2) and then headed
over to WR for Davis Boston (3). Was able to reach Gannon
(4) as a falling tier one QB and then ran back to receivers
to gain Troy Brown (5). My first inclination was to give
this team a "C" because he managed to get almost
entirely players that are not "my guys". The
objective reality is that he has two solid RBs, a great
QB situation and a lot of receivers I do not like. Then
again, starting out RB-RB here is a solid start but led
to him to miss the better WRs and then by the time he
got back to RBs they were fairly stripped for RB3 and
RB4. Lucked into Gannon. Discounting my player preferences,
I think this drafter went after his perceived value about
as well as could be done and did a good job with what
he was left with, but the strategy did not work out as
well this time. |
* Grading reflects how well drafting plan worked out plus
more than a little personal opinion.
