This mock draft was based on standard performance scoring for
a 12 team league that starts 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 "Flex"
(RB/WR/TE), PK and DEF each week. The difference in this
mock is that the league uses a flex position which ideally is
a RB, and awards one point per reception. This draft was
conducted just prior to the injury to Michael Vick and the promotion
of Kelly Holcomb, as well as the release of Derrick Alexander.
Below the listing of resulting teams
is a quick synopsis of each team's draft strategy and success.

Draft Analysis
Note - the change of allowing a flex
position and one point per reception changes the analysis
from all other prior mock draft reviews so far this season.
| Team |
First 5 Picks/Grade* |
Draft Slot Analysis |
| 1 |
RB-WR-TE-RB-WR
Plan Grade: C |
Starting out with Tomlinson, Team 1 went to Robinson
(2) for an upside receiver and then tabbed Gonzalez
with the 3.01 pick in the draft. This one seemingly
attractive move caused a chain reaction that likely
hurt the team more than helped. Needing a RB2 in the
fourth round, just missed out on Warrick Dunn (nice
since he gets receptions) and settled for Barlow (4).
For an indication of how problematic that pick was,
consider that after this pick, only three other RBs
went in the next 24 picks. End of the run that was forced
caused the highest scoring position to use a RB that
shares time with Hearst as an RB2. Tapping Mason (5)
and Morgan (6) were solid choices at that time but took
their WR3 before RB3. Not a real choice though since
RBs had been so drained and team returned to RBs with
Canidate (7) as another "share carries" guy
though with equal risk and upside. Waiting until the
8th round to take a QB in Plummer (8) and then McNair
(9) meant they started their QBs after the best 12 were
already gone. Even with lower scoring by QBs, that is
a bit long to wait but could prove to be okay.
Team looks great with CAR (10), Gramatica (14), Gonzalez
(3) and Tomlinson (1) but in a league that starts 6
RB/WR and a TE, spending that early pick on a TE just
does not prove out to be beneficial. Consider last season,
Gonzalez scored 182 points in this scoring system. Bubba
Franks (5th round pick) and Shannon Sharpe (7th round
pick) only scored about 36 points less with around 146.
However, guys like Horn (264 pts), Booker (257 pts),
Toomer (264 pts) and a ton of other receivers scored
better and were available. By the time the team reached
another receiver in Mason, they just gave up about 60
points. Having a top TE is an advantage, but it cannot
come at the detriment of other positions that score
more points. Hines Ward was taken three picks later
and he scored 337 points in this scoring system last
season, so the point differential could be far greater.
The reality is that if you want a top TE, you will need
to overspend for them in most every draft and then MUST
get lucky with a sleeper later on or it will not pay
off.

| 2 |
RB-RB-TE-RB-WR
Plan Grade: B - |
Took the risk with Holmes which
is gamble that could pay off huge in a league with reception
points. Then got Curtis Martin (2), took followed the
normal "tight ends are going!" and took Shockey
(see above for that idea) with the 3rd pick and made up
ground by getting Dunn (4) as the final good RB. Holmes,
Martin and Dunn could be a killer trio in this scoring.
Concerned with all the receivers already gone, went Troy
Brown (5), Conway (6) and Porter (7) and the starting
receivers. This is team one with just different names.
Also went Bledsoe (8) and Pennington (9) in an attempt
to secure the best available QBs that never gain rushing
points. This plan provided a great trio of rushers which
is good. A great TE. And then only average players, at
best, for QB and WR which make up 4 starters every week.
Team was fortunate to reach Dunn and that one pick is
the only thing keeping this team afloat. Little depth
in RB, TE, DEF, PK and WR most likely are all middle of
the road. |
| 3 |
RB-WR-QB-RB-WR
Plan Grade: C |
Starts with Alexander (1) and
then Moulds (2) for a nice combo. Then headed to Vick
(3) which then broke his leg. Problem with that move,
aside from the ambulance thing, is that the difference
between Vick last year (331 pts) and McNair or Green or
Brady was only a whole 14 points for the year. Went back
wisely to RB and took Anthony Thomas (4) who will have
to do well in order for the team to succeed since the
rest of the five running backs drafted could all have
no carries in any given week. Moulds, Rod Smith (5) and
Chambers (6) was a good set where they were taken and
Lelie (9) could come on to help. The tight ends continue
to be early, though McMichael (7) is nothing near as bad
as Gonzalez or Shockey in the early third were. Even with
a healthy Vick, this team would have problems putting
up the nine different starters each week with only Alexander
and Moulds as probable difference makers. |
| 4 |
RB-WR-TE-WR-QB
Plan Grade: B |
Team started naturally with Ricky
Williams (1) and then grabbed nice possession guy in Burress
(2). Then, having seen the tight ends flying could not
resist taking Heap (3). Managed Jimmy Smith (4) which,
prior to the suspension was a decent pick and then landed
a whopper in Manning (5). While QB scoring is not greatly
diverse in this scoring, there is likely no more solid
choice than the durable and productive Manning. This was
a gift for them and actually allowed them to make up ground
from the Heap pick. Did not address RBs until the sixth
round and landed Hambrick (6) which, by this point, was
another player falling pretty far. Grabbed TB (7) for
an advantage and Elam (9) for another, how ever slight
it might be. This is hard one to grade. The best picks
were the falling Hambrick and Manning but like team three,
there are five backup running backs that might not have
a single carry in any given week. Receivers are not an
advantage but not a huge weakness either. This team got
lucky in the draft and that works too when you can get
it. |
| 5 |
RB-RB-WR-WR-QB
Plan Grade: B + |
Started out with Marshall Faulk
(1) and still reached Stephen Davis (2) who is a little
less valuable since he does not receive much but by this
point I like to see a team with a solid #2 RB. Wisely
went for Holt (3), Price (4) and still reached Gannon
(5) as a top tier QB. Donte' Stallworth (6) rounded out
the starting WR and with Walker and Northcutt, the backups
will likely be little help. Liked the Moe Williams (11)
move since he will get something every week. Pittman (20)
may be a jailbird soon, but still is a huge steal at the
20th pick. You have to like high paid lawyers versus district
attorneys. Favre (8) was a great backup QB and Bulger
(15) had no business being available that late. Not a
great team, but a fairly solid one at the starting positions.
|
| 6 |
RB-RB-WR-QB-WR
Plan Grade: A - |
Pretty nice to start out with
Portis (1) but taking Taylor (2) is a sadly risky move.
Had to choose between him and Stephen Davis and the reality
is that Davis does not catch a lot of points in this system.
Snagged Hines Ward (3) and still managed to reach McNabb
(4). Wisely shifted back to WR and got Bruce (5) and Gardner
(6). Stacey Mack (8) offers a good backup but in a league
that allows up to three RBs to start, he might prove a
bit weak and he has no other RBs that will likely touch
the ball outside of Davenport (11). He still got away
with waiting so late on RBs with Mack and Davenport. Very
solid set of receivers with big depth and upside and solid
in TE, PK and DEF. In order for this team to excel, will
need Taylor to stay healthy and deliver and at least one
of his WR to really breakout. Solid team with upside,
the plan worked pretty well and managed a few nice value
picks in McNabb, Ward and Mack. |
| 7 |
RB-RB-RB-WR-WR
Plan Grade: A |
At the seventh spot in this scoring,
I liked the team before I even saw the names attached.
First picks netted James (1), William Green (2) and James
Stewart (3) and then fell back to get Chad Johnson (4)
and Coles (5) for a very solid start. Added Jamel White
(13) very late as someone who fell unreasonably. This
is a very solid team with a good QB taken late in Brooks
(7) and three starting RBs and Shipp and White as players
that either backup his stars or provide something every
week. Bennett (12) was taken sort of early but could be
a late season gold mine. Just a solid team throughout
that can post consistent points and will not have to rely
on one or two players to make the difference. |
| 8 |
RB-WR-RB-RB-WR
Plan Grade: A |
Great pick in McAllister (1),
followed by Owens (2) and then back to still get George
(3). Wise move with Onterrio Smith (4) but would be better
if he later tapped Michael Bennett too for insurance.
Emmitt (8) provides depth. Only five receivers but likely
would only need to start two of them and Owens and Rice
are a nice pair with Josh Reed to provide upside as his
WR3. Landed Garcia (6) and Brady (11) which are not my
kind of players but this plan worked out very well for
the very tough 8 spot. Personally I might have taken a
few different players, but the positional plan worked
out well and allowed him to make some nice value picks
as well as upside ploys. |
| 9 |
RB-RB-WR-WR-TE
Plan Grade: C + |
Started out with Henry (1) and
Jamal Lewis (2) which are unlikely to challenge as a top
5 RB, but offer very solid beginnings. Next two picks
mined the WRs and came away with Booker (3) and Driver
(4) and then opted for Franks (5) instead of a RB3 or
WR3 which in this scoring seems questionable. Still reached
Hasselbeck (6) and backed him up with both Maddox (9)
and Stewart (18). This plan created a team that is loaded
at QB and RB started out well and then were ignored until
the 11th round which yielded only Wheatley (11) and later
Levens (15). Beyond the starting WRs, Edwards (12), Freeman
(19) and Glenn (20) may not even be playing in a given
week so WR depth is questionable. Solid on TE, PK and
DEF. This team will provide a nice set of starters but
will have problems in bye weeks for RBs and WRs which
can be very telling. I liked the plan up until the TE
pick with the 5th. Akers (7) was taken much too early
for instance, and the team passed on Reggie Wayne, Antowain
Smith and Stacey Mack to get him. In the attempt to get
a balanced team - a good idea, the earlier picks left
him with little depth where it counts most - RB and WR. |
| 10 |
WR-RB-WR-RB-TE
Plan Grade: A |
Could not resist Harrison (1)
and was smart not to skip him. Added Dillon (2) and then
Toomer (3) and then took a shot on Staley (4) which could
prove a genius or idiot move depending on Staley's whim.
Taking Zereoue (6) proved a great move in light of his
recent promotion. Pollard (5) was maybe a little early
but about the best shot at getting a TE to move up into
the vaunted top three this season so waiting until the
5th spot was okay, particularly landing Zereoue the next
round anyway. Landed some great late QB talent in Green
(8), Brunell (11) and Holcomb (20). This is one lucky
team! Grabbed Miami (9) for a top defense too. I love
the way this team ended up, even if it was partially luck
(though I am sure the drafter feels different). With Kevin
Faulk has a nice RB4 to use and while I am not crazy about
the WR depth, he can easily start 3 RBs a week anyway
so he only needs two. Very solid team that will post consistent
points. |
| 11 |
RB-RB-WR-WR-RB
Plan Grade: B + |
I already like the look of the
plan. Started out with Garner (1) who is big in a scoring
| |
