First 5 Picks/Grade* |
Draft Slot Analysis |
|
1 |
RB - QB - WR - TE - RB
Plan Grade: A- |
Knowing that he could not reach a great
RB, Team 1 went for top picks in RB, QB and WR at first
and then grabbed the remaining Top 3 TE with his #4. Put
himself behind the 8 ball on his RB2 but if Anthony Thomas
can return to form this is a good team - solid with at
least one starter in each position. Instead of backing
up CPep with Garcia at his #6, probably better off with
a higher reward WR than Chambers (#7). If Thomas does
not deliver and Chambers mirrors last season, might struggle
some weeks. If Culpepper, Tomlinson and Robinson all hit,
will post some monster weeks as well. |
|
2 |
RB - RB - QB - WR - WR
Plan Grade: B |
Reached a little potentially in taking George
with his #2, but followed that up with nice #3 in Manning.
Then hit WR next two round getting Coles and Keyshawn.
Took a value steal in the 6th with Warner who fell tremendously.
Like the McMichael pick with the #7 followed by top defense
of Miami with #8. Solid team that needs George and Coles
to replicate last year. Bigtime trade bait in Warner.
Also stole Gordon. Very standard approach to a #2 pick
though using his #2 on a RB like George while passing
up chance to get top QB and WR with next two picks made
him accept a much less impressive set of starters but
at least he did not have to worry about landing a sleeper
RB to get the job done. |
|
3 |
RB - WR - WR - RB - WR
Plan Grade: B+ |
While I do not completely agree with the
picks made for receivers, this plan worked out pretty
well. After Ricky Williams, took two top receivers to
cover starters and still managed to get James Stewart
with his #4 and backed him up with Hearst which could
work out well enough. Received great value by waiting
on QB and grabbing Favre with his #7 pick. If Boston can
display 2001 form as a Charger, this team will be good
with solid starters and RBs that can be mixed enough to
provide at least adequate numbers. Surprised that he backed
up his WR before getting a QB or a backup RB, but actually
looks like he got away with it. |
|
4 |
RB - RB - RB - WR - WR
Plan Grade: B- |
This plan had him taking his backup RB3
before any other position but with the set of Faulk, Martin
and Barlow certainly has a strong rushing unit. Managed
to make up waiting on WR by getting great value with Booker,
Conway and then Morgan with his #6 pick. Surprisingly,
team then grabbed a RB4 before getting a QB or TE. By
reaching for Alstott with the #7, put himself in "make-up"
ground mode and settled for Pennington (#8) as his starting
QB when he could have had Hasselbeck, Bledsoe or McNair
for a QB with his #7 instead of a RB he may never use.
While the CAR pick at #9 was solid, he lost out on getting
Gordon to backup Faulk. Super solid at RB as long as Faulk
is healthy and good at WR, needs surprise performance
at QB and TE to gain consistency. |
|
5 |
RB - RB - WR - TE - WR
Plan Grade: B+ |
Interesting blend of players. Should be
good at RB with Holmes, Garner and Emmitt to fill in.
Used a good strategy to gain a solid backfield, a top
WR and TE. Probable reach on Brad Johnson at #7 was compensated
with Trent Green falling to #10. Not scared of young receivers
with Stallworth and Rogers but could end up with very
nice receivers each week. Will have to play mix and match
at QB and team is very dependent on KC with Green, Holmes
and Gonzo. If Holmes returns to form and Stallworth or
Rogers hits well, will be a very solid team. Taking the
TE with the #4 delayed WR2 or a QB, but may have gotten
away with it. |
|
6 |
RB - WR - QB - RB - WR
Plan Grade: B |
Made good use of his draft slot by grabbing
a solid RB in McAllister, then a top WR with Moss and
a top QB with Vick. RB2 with Dunn may be a little iffy
but with him and later Zereoue and Moe Williams should
be able to fill in weekly. After getting his starters
for QB, RB and WR, backed up his WR first with the #6
of Jackson which is a nice pick that he appears to get
away with instead of getting a RB3 which he did the following
round with Amos. Sharpe is declining but may be okay but
forgot to factor in the week 4 bye for Sharpe when his
TE2 was Chamberlain that is suspended still that week.
Pretty solid at most starting positions and spectacular
in a few places. |
|
7 |
RB - RB - WR - TE - RB
Plan Grade: A |
Made great use of his draft slot and the
value available when he picked. Alexander was a no-brainer
and Tiki fell to him as an RB2. Holt with his #3 followed
by Shockey with the #4 was very nice indeed. Waited on
QB's but may be okay with Maddox and Harrington. Backed
up RBs with #5 and got Staley - great #3 RB. While QBs
could be a weakness and WR2 may be only adequate at most,
solid job throughout and has four difference makers in
Alexander, Barber, Holt and Shockey. Great job on getting
value after taking the last Tier 1 RB. Skipping the WR
at #4 in preference of Shockey may seem like missing out
on some points but if there is any position you want to
have needing breakthroughs, wide receiver is the one. |
|
8 |
WR - RB - QB - WR - RB
Plan Grade: A- |
This is a very good plan for the #8 slot.
Took the best WR on his board, followed up with a solid
RB in Davis before the lower risk RBs were gone. Still
able to reach McNabb with the #3 and then a little surprisingly
got a WR2 before a RB2 but may be more than fine with
Bettis and Antowain Smith to fill in and Duckett sits
on the bench as well. This was a good use of the #8 position.
Instead of reaching for a RB with his #1, ended up with
top WR and QB and still more than fine at RB with Davis
and a solid set of second RBs to use. Pollard in the 6th
was nice and helps round out a good set of starters. Only
weakness is receiver depth but big deal. Brady in the
11th is extremely nice as a backup. |
|
9 |
WR - RB - WR - QB - RB
Plan Grade: A- |
Like the previous team, played out the draft
slot well taking Harrison with the #1 and still getting
William Green with the #2. Able to reach Horn with his
#3, the play worked out well since he still reached Brooks
at QB with his #4 and then used #5 and #6 to get great
value picks in Hambrick and Mack. This is about as good
as you can get for a #9 pick with two top WR, a great
QB and upside and depth at RB. Possibly with four difference
makers in Brooks, Green, Harrison and Horn, the only downside
to this team is lack of proven stars at RB (the highest
scoring position) but has no worries at QB or WR. If he
can hit with the RB's, he will offer very consistent points. |
|
10 |
RB - RB - WR - WR - RB
Plan Grade: B |
At the #10 pick, the wonders of the end
of the first round are seen - Ahman Green and Jamal Lewis
as starting RBs! Maybe not spectacular but likely solid
and this deep in the draft that is about the best you
can hope for though this strategy passes by some very
attractive WR and QB in order to fill those starting RB
slots. By the time he picked again, he grabbed his two
starting WR in Ward and Driver. The difficulty drafting
like this in the #10 spot is that getting those two best
available RB means that the WR picks will either be risky
picks or, as in this case, they are selections of WRs
that you have to hope will maintain their big surprise
seasons in 2002. Filled in RB3 and WR3 the next two picks
and Canidate and Porter are risks that could pay off well
but are less reliable. Waited until #7 to get a QB and
took McNair over a few other QBs I would have preferred
but could be fine. With Fiedler as the #2, he better be
right about McNair. Made up for some lost ground by taking
TB defense. This team was put together well considering
what taking two RBs first caused, but the main difference
making player on the team is the Defense. Taking those
two RBs first ended up making him take several players
he felt he needed to take instead of the best player available,
but seeing the two teams before him grab RB-RB already
likely forced him to make a decision with big implications
down the road. |
|
11 |
RB - RB - QB - WR - WR
Plan Grade: B+ |
This is an interesting comparison to the
previous team. Both took solid RBs with their two first
picks but instead of using the WR for #3, this team opted
for a upper echelon QB in Gannon. This allowed him to
take Price and Gardner as his two starting WR. Price is
a gamble but was probably about the best he saw at that
time and he needed to take a roll of the dice to get a
solid WR. Gardner was a good value pick at #5 but decision
to go WR3 with his #6 pick instead of getting a RB3 meant
he passed on Mack or Hearst and ended up with a fairly
weak Jordan and Buckhalter as backup RBs. Still, he has
a fairly solid team which is the best you can hope for
taking two RBs and then waiting until the 3.11 for any
other position. Starters could be fine but his strongest
depth is probably WR. |
|
12 |
RB - RB - WR - WR - WR
Plan Grade: B
(maybe an "A" or a "C") |
Everyone loves the swing picks and this
team took a big gamble on greatness by taking Taylor and
James. Sort of like expecting that by the end of the season
you could either have the best or worst set of runners.
There is a chance that by week 14 he may have no starting
RBs. He may have the top two. Went for the natural play
by taking the two best receivers next which was decent
value in Toomer and Chad Johnson but then used #5 to backup
his WRs. The only thing more surprising than this is that
he absolutely got away with it by finding Onterrio Smith
with his #6 and Hasselbeck with his #7. This team is a
fairly big gamble that could pay off well if Hasselbeck
picks back up from last year and James and Taylor reach
their potential and remain healthy. A hard team to completely
evaluate since there are question marks that may be busts
or great picks. |
* Grading reflects how well drafting plan worked out plus
more than a little personal opinion.
