NYJ (7-3) vs ARZ (4-5)
Game Prediction: NYJ 14, ARZ 17
This game should be better than the records indicate. The Jets are only 3-2 in the road and the Cardinals are 3-1 at home. Both teams are starting new quarterbacks for various reasons and Curtis Martin comes in dinged up. This is a toss up game.
Update: Emmitt Smith has been held out of practice with a sore knee but is expected to play, especially since Troy Hambrick is now on injured reserve. But be aware there is some risk there, even with the Cardinals wanting to use Emmitt relatively heavily.
Curtis Martin is probable and has been getting treatment for his bruised knee. He is expected to play without any limitations.
Pre-Game Notes - NYJ
The Jets come off a three point win in Cleveland in spite of only scoring 10 points. With the Patriots unwilling to fall apart this season, every game is a must win regardless if it has to come with Quincy Carter or not.
Quarterback: Quincy Carter threw his first Jet touchdown last week but only ended with 116 passing yards and one interception. He is following the tradition laid down by Pennington by completely ignoring Santa Moss.
Running Backs: Curtis Martin tweaked his knee last week but should be probable to play. I am assuming that Martin is good to go but will share a little extra with Lamont Jordan to prevent overusing him.
Wide Receivers: Justin McCareins had his third score in the last four games and a season high 71 yards against the Browns last week. Santana Moss - two catches for 24 yards though combined the two wideouts accounted for all but 20 of the very meager passing yards in the game. Moss had 75 yards the previous week with Carter, so he's not without any production. It's just too infrequent to ever count on.
Tight Ends: "whiff"
Match Against the Defense: The Cardinals are usually attacked most successfully with the run where they are only average. Expect a good game from Martin that will not turn into a big game since Jordan is likely to get involved. With Carter throwing, the Cardinals will maintain their five game streak of holding opposing quarterbacks to less than 200 yards though he could throw one score.
That one passing score actually favors the tight end position which the Jets almost never use. If it happens, McCareins has been the only consistent threat to score on a pass. It's just as likely not to happen given Carter as the starter.
Pre-Game Notes - ARZ
The Cardinals opted for a change after beating the Giants, so they installed Shaun King as the quarterback and received the worst loss of the season in Carolina. Nice move, Denny.
Quarterback: While Shaun King did throw for a season high 343 yards by an Arizona quarterback (and easily since the previous was only 231 yards), he also turned in a season high with three interceptions and one lost fumble. This may be good for fantasy leagues but questionable for the health of the Cardinals record. While no word has been formally given, the assumption is that King again starts.
Running Backs: Emmitt Smith played last week with a foot that was still sprained and only gained 26 yards on 11 carries. Troy Hambrick also injured his foot and will likely be out this week. Josh Scobey should replace him though Scobey is used exclusively as a third down pass catcher and has only two carries on the year - both in week one.
Wide Receivers: Larry Fitzgerald was the main recipient of all those passing yards last week, catching seven balls for 92 yards and one score. Anquan Boldin had six receptions for 75 yards for his season best but the odd fact is that since Boldin has been back for four weeks, he has not scored and yet Fitzgerald has two touchdowns and two games with 92 yards - both on the road. At home in week 10, Fitzgerald did not have any catches.
Tight Ends: Shaun King did notice Freddie Jones who had a season high five catches for 73 yards last week. Jones only totaled three catches for 17 yards in the three previous games.
Match Against the Defense: The Jets secondary has been very solid this season and allowed a high of only 230 yards on the road this year (Brady). No team hosting the Jets has thrown for more than one touchdown as well. Expect Shaun King to settle in more around the 200 yard range this week in a game where they should not trail by such a large and early margin that forces constant throwing.
Emmitt Smith should manage a moderate game here with an outside chance at a score since the Jets have allowed only five runners to score this season and never more than once a game. This should be a much more defensive matchup and the Jets have held every opponent since week three to less than 22 points. Six games have kept opponents to 14 points or less.
This looks like a definite "under" game since the Cardinals have not allowed the last three visitors to score more than 17 points.
