CHI (5-9) vs DET (5-9)

Game Prediction: CHI 10, DET 20

This is a rematch of week one when the Lions won 20-16 in Chicago and finally killed the road curse. These are two pretty similar teams, both 5-8 on two game losing streaks but at least the Lions have an offense.

Pre-Game Notes - CHI

When the offense only scores 8 points over the last two weeks, it may be time to rethink the offensive scheme.

Quarterback: Chad Hutchinson remains the quarterback because no one can forget he threw three touchdowns against the Vikings three weeks ago. Never mind that he has spent the last two weeks with no scores, three lost fumbles and two interceptions. THREE TOUCHDOWNS! It's like the only warm memory from the entire season.

Running Backs: It doesn't really matter who or where they play. Thomas Jones will gain around 70 to 80 total yards and never score. Been that way for the last five weeks. Jones had 105 yards and two scores back in week one but that was a very long time ago. It was three quarterbacks ago.

Wide Receivers: If you get more than 40 yards from any Chicago wideout, it is a major success and proof that you can beat random odds. You'd still be better off buying scratch-off lottery tickets and have slightly better chances.

Tight Ends: Just because Desmond Clark is as good as any wideout on his team does not mean that matters.

Match Against the Defense: The Detroit rushing defense has been fairly good this year which means that Jones will gain around 70 to 80 yards this week because it does not matter what the defense is like.

The Lions can give up big games to quarterbacks but the Bears have yet to actually find one other than the week 14 version of Chad Hutchinson. He had three touchdowns then. THREE TOUCHDOWNS! But more likely none this week - one tops.

Pre-Game Notes - DET

The Lions have lost their last two games but both of them were three points or less. The offense was suddenly hitting on all cylinders last week, other than, you know, that whole extra point thing.

Quarterback: Sometimes all it takes is a game against Minnesota to save your season and make everything all right again. Joey Harrington had 361 yards and two scores last week in what was easily his best game though he did throw for two interceptions. After five weeks of sub-par efforts, he needed that one big game thanks to the Vikings. Actually, a little know fact is that the Vikings also allowed Chad Hutchinson to throw for three touchdowns too. THREE TOUCHDOWNS!

Harrington only had 187 yards and one score in the first meeting against the Bears.

Running Backs: Kevin Jones is only 62 yards away from gaining 1000 yards as a rookie and has scored in each of the last three games. His big yardage games of weeks 14 (196) and week 15 (156) came down hard last week when he only managed 79 yards against the Vikings. Jones first NFL start was against Chicago but he only had 36 yards on 15 carries and was not completely healthy during opening week.

Wide Receivers: Roy Williams had almost disappeared over the last six weeks but against the Vikings had 104 yards and two scores - his first decent game since week seven. Williams gained 69 yards in week one against Chicago and had scored five touchdowns in the first seven weeks before the Detroit passing game went south.

Az-Zahir Hakim had 108 yards last week and scored a touchdown in the first meeting with the Bears.

Tight Ends: Stephen Alexander just blocks now that Kevin Jones is running well. He only has 31 yards over the last three weeks.

Match Against the Defense: The Bears rush defense has allowed on average one rushing score per game over the last seven weeks and have allowed some nice yardage efforts as well. Expect that Jones gets at least a moderate game here with 80 rushing yards and he could top 100 yards again if the Lions get a nice lead.

Harrington faces a secondary that is about average - maybe a little better. There's more reason to expect Harrington to revert to his non-Viking form so he'll do well enough to match his 190 yards and one score from week one when he had no running game to use.
