The results from 2004 showing how many times a tight either gained 50 yards in a game, scored at least one touchdown during a game or did either event in a game. “Plyd” indicates how many games were played by each tight end.
Games with 50 yards or more: This statistic shows exactly how many tight ends in the NFL are of any true fantasy consequence – about eight. Once a player falls below 33% (or one in every three games), his production is not reliable nor much of a difference maker for a fantasy team. If you want to find a tight end with any consistency at all, you had better draft one earlier than later. The review only considers games with just 50 yards (five fantasy points in most scoring). There’s just precious little consistent yardage in any of them.
Games with at least one touchdown: The most interesting finding here is that the Washington Redskins produced two of the top seven tight ends for scoring – Robert Royal (4 TD’s, 44% of games) and Chris Cooley (6 TD’s, 38% of games). Royal only had eight catches for the entire year but four of them were scores and all came in the final five weeks. This could continue and if Royal’s share goes to Cooley as he continues to develop, Cooley will become a top tight end in the league. Notable also was that Marcus Pollard (5 TD’s, 42%) and Dallas Clark (4 TD’s, 31%) combined for nine games with at least one score (both Pollard and Clark had one game with two scores) and never once did they both score in the same game. Pollard has left for Detroit and leaves behind a tremendous opportunity for Clark.
