Plan: RB, WR, RB, WR, RB
After starting with Tomlinson, took the best WR with Holt and then scooped up Westbrook over Chris Brown and all the rookies. Likely safer IF Westbrook remains healthy though his role will likely be reduced anyway. Grabbed Bennett at the end of the 4th and then used his 5th to get a back-up RB in Barlow who was the last starting RB to get besides Dunn.
Waited until the 11th to get his first QB so at best this team will have average QB points and could be a liability. Some upside in Mewelde Moore, Caldwell and Clayton. Pick of Clark at the 6.12 may have been early but a swing slot either takes someone early or gets a steal late.
Overall, Tomlinson will have to carry this team and Westbrook/Barlow cannot disappoint or LT won't be enough. Waiting so long on QB hurt the team considering he could have had Brooks, Brady or Palmer with his 9.01 pick instead of Caldwell. LT, Holt and maybe Clark seem only difference makers.

Plan: RB, WR, RB, WR, RB
Like Team #1, grabbed RB in Alexander and then Chad Johnson with the 2.11. Risky pick of Bennett with the 3.02 that may not be there when he needs him. Went back to WR with Clayton and then used 5.02 to grab Dunn.
Grabbed nice value of Shockey with the 8.11 and took an optimistic swing at the fence with Collins at QB with the 7.02 over Hasselbeck and Favre. Backed him up with Brees in the 10th as a nice fallback. Solid on defense.
Overall, team doesn't seem very stocked but a closer look bumps up the grade. Should be okay at QB as long as it sorts it self out quickly and love Dunn and Duckett as RB depth. Even if Bennett gets hurt - this team will always have someone to plug in. Doesn't hurt either that I love his first four WRs and all but Clayton have at least decent upside. Could be in a little trouble with injury to Shockey but there's decent depth all around on this team.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, TE, WR
Without looking at names, the plan seems pretty tried and true at the #3 spot. Took Edgerrin and then Jordan which cleared out Tier 3 RBs just in time. Still reached always solid Harrison and then nabbed Witten for a difference maker at TE - just missed Gates by one pick so Witten was a little early. Probably was too excited about getting Gates... but didn't.
Picked up Trent Green with the 6.10 and visited WR every few picks to take best value. Must like CHI defense more than most but Akers was nice with the 11.03.
Overall, Green is solid at QB but Boller will likely not be a factor even if needed. RB depth with Faulk may be okay and Shelton is everyone's favorite "sleeper". Zereoue likely a wasted pick but nice starters and backups at TE and PK and WR should be at least average with the chance to be very good. DEF not going to be difference maker here. Ended with a solid team but will need some expectations to be exceeded to become a great team.
Plan Grade: B |
Plan: RB, RB, QB, TE, WR
Fourth pick made the choice every draft sees now or at the 3rd pick - take Holmes or not? By the 4th pick, it's almost impossible to ignore what Holmes can do and yet not possible to accept the big risk of injury. Went with safe pick of Martin at the 2.09 which was likely wise and then took McNabb with the 3.04 as final Tier 1 QB on board.
Could not resist Gates with the 4.09 pick and after four picks looked very strong. However - WR did not start until 5.04 and Coles is better cast as a WR2 not WR1. Then had to take Larry Johnson with the 6th before someone stole him and rendered the Holmes pick as wasted late in the season. After that, it was mostly chasing needs instead of value picks.
Toefield could be the JAX starter and Gore a nice risk pick. At best these WR's will be only average. Strong at QB and starting RB, TE and DEF and weak at WR and PK but those are the two areas easiest to upgrade on the waiver wire. Taking an early QB and TE, along with having to get LJ was probably too much to aim for as other positions were being stripped.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, RB
This is a standard plan for a mid-draft slot and usually works out well. Started with McAllister and Green, then grabbed two upper tier WR in Andre Johnson and Burleson for a nice 1-2 at WR. Went back for backup RB and took Fred Taylor which could be a feast or famine risk.
Took Hasselbeck in the 7th as an excellent value and still reached McMichael in the 9th for the final Tier 2 TE (AKA tight ends that matter). Waiting until the final rounds for DEF and PK mean there'll be no difference makers there but should manage to produce average number from his selections.
Overall, this team (like most mid-draft slots) has no tier one players from any position but is rock solid in depth and upside. With players like Taylor, Bettis and Clarett, Troupe and Mike Williams, there is a ton of both upside and risk here. Depending on injuries and luck, this team could be a top team or a bottom team and most likely will end about where he drafted.
Plan Grade: B
|
Plan:QB, RB, RB, WR, RB
By mid-round, Manning is always an option that gets harder to pass by - but one that comes with a price. Had to take RB's with the next two picks and ended up with the 15th and 21st best RBs. Had to get a WR which Roy Williams was best available and could be okay. Got a steal with Staley at the 5.06 but while others were warming up to QB, this team had to look at finding best values left at RB and WR.
Pick of Wiggins at the 9.06 was earlier than needed and he just missed McMichael by one pick. Tier 3 TE's could wait for a few more rounds. Should be fine at DEF and PK - no less than average with some upside there.
Overall, this team took the Manning plunge and had the same problems round 1 QB's always create - had to chase to get average RBs and then later take some risk moves like Henry hoping to get lucky. After Manning, there are no players on the team that are in the top 12 in their position. Manning is a treasure to be sure, but not one that comes cheaply this year. This team is basically Manning and just average players which is what happens normally with taking a QB at the 1.06.

Plan: RB, WR, RB, WR, RB
Started out with Lewis which was a bit high for my tastes and followed him up With Owens than back to get Chris Brown. Went back to WR for Steve Smith and then settled on Foster as RB3.
Loved what happened next - grabbed great value in Bulger then took BAL (a round early really) and later picks of L.J. Smith and Palmer have great upside this year. Longwell should be fine to very good at PK and got Taylor to backup Lewis.
Overall, I didn't agree with the actual players in every case but the plan seemed to work very well. Lot of risk in Owens, Brown, Foster and Steve Smith comes off injury (but should be fine). For a set of starters, this team looks pretty good with some nice difference makers in Owens, Bulger and BAL, probably good on RB (though risky) and WR depth has nice upside. Cannot deny the risk in many of the players, but cannot deny this plan looks like it worked well for a mid-draft slot
Plan Grade: B+ |
Plan: RB, WR, RB, RB, WR
Went after McGahee and then took Moss with the 2.05 - big drop there from most drafts. Still reached Ronnie Brown with the 3.08 and more surprisingly, caught Carnell Williams with the 4.04 - another surprising drop. Major start there with some fortuitous players falling.
Rounded out WR with Smith and Bruce for a solid group and used the 7.08 for Delhomme though I would have taken Favre there. Picked up NE with the 9.08 and by the 10.05, Johnson was all that was left for TE. With Vanderjagt and Wilkins, likely has the best set of kickers in the league.
Overall, this plan worked great. Three starting RBs, best WR with solid (though decidely aging) WR depth. Weakness really only at TE but strength at RB clearly an advantage. Change a few names and I would love to own this team. Did take a few KC players but oddly none of the ones that matter. This is a team that should prove solid throughout with big time upside in three RBs. Have to love that. Maybe it was just how the draft broke out, but he was there for some great values.

Plan: RB, QB, WR, TE, WR
This is a fascinating plan that tries to compensate drafting late and yet still three spots away from the swing. Took Kevin Jones and then grabbed Culpepper for a great QB. Walker at WR a nice value and then Gonzalez at TE gives him the best there. After 5 picks, he has a nice RB, the best QB (arguably anyway) and TE and a top 5 WR. That is nice. And then...
Waiting until round 6 for RB2 landed Suggs and was probably lucky to get him. Buckhalter in the 8.04 might end up the starter and Droughns has upside relative to the 10.04 pick. DId a decent job on WR depth given what was still there to choose from. Elam as the 7th kicker taken is plain stealing.
Overall, I liked what this plan tried to do and the results are interesting. Great players in Culpepper, Gonzalez and very solid with Kevin Jones and Walker. Didn't care for Fitzgerald over Driver, Porter or Mason. If this team gets either Suggs, Buckhalter or Droughns to hit, it could surprise. RB depth always scary but drafter tried against the grain moves and it worked for the most part.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, QB
Pretty standard approach for a 10th pick with pretty standard results. Nice value with Portis at the 1.10 and Barber at the 2.03. Then went after WR with Ward and Jackson before using the 5.1o to take Vick (who I admittedly would never draft). Vick could have been Bulger. Personal preference and all.
Surprisingly mined WR again in the 6th and 7th and took name players of Mason and Moulds who both could have down years. Crumpler at the 8.03 solid pick at a good spot. Used 11.10 to get Franks in case Crumpler crumples but likely a bit early.
Overall, this built a solid team though not one that appears right now to be a challenger. All RB depth could be worthless when needed and WRs read like ex-studs of the past on the downslide (but should be at least solid in fairness). Using a standard approach produced no apparent difference makers on the team and it appears to be headed right for the middle of the standings to me. Safe plan but only ended up with a team that will aspire to be just good - not likely ever great.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, WR
Used the back swing to get Davis (great value) and Jackson (bit early maybe) and then WR1 was locked down with Horn. Benson at the 4.02 may never happen again this year. Mined the WR with Driver, Kennison and Muhammad.
Waited until 9.11 to get QB in Brooks (nice value) and TE Cooley at 10.02 likely not the best choice for TE1 though personally I like him a lot. DEF and PK are mostly throw ins that will not make any difference and could even be a liability since none of them are clearly better than the other.
Overall, this team got lucky at QB and RB to be sure and it made a huge difference. Even backed up Benson with Jones. WRs will be at least good with a chance for nice numbers every week. Bottom part of roster nothing special. Disliked the Roethlisberger pick as QB2 but his strength is at RB and WR and should be okay at QB. The rest score less anyway and could be finagled through the waiver wire if needed. For a backend swing, this plan worked out fine and in this particular draft worked great with a few very fortuitous drops of players.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, TE
Like team #11, this team grabbed Julius Jones and Dillon for a great swing start, then tabbed Wayne and went back to find J.J. Arrington still there at the 4.01. Little surprising he passed on Benson, but the step down is nothing huge and with rookies - who knows really?
Grabbed Heap at the 5.12 which seems much too early to me given the changes in BAL and likely would be stronger looking had he been Kennison or Mason and taken a TE with his 7/8 swing. PIT fell to him at the 12.01 for a nice pick.
Overall, this team used a similar strategy to team #11 but with slightly better results since he has Favre over Brooks and the same strengths at RB and WR. There is great upside on all the WR and nice backups for RBs for insurance purposes. This team could surprise and I liked it a bit more than what happened next door as it played out in this draft. Both teams got RB3 as top rookie runners which cannot be counted on. Room to grow and some nice players to watch.
