Plan: RB, WR, WR,RB, QB
This was a high-risk, high-reward strategy that appears to have worked. Started out with Tomlinson naturally and then with the 2/3 swing opted to grab the two tier 1 receivers on the board - Chad Johnson and Torry Holt. Knowing that he had skipped RBs at a crucial time, went back and at the 4.12 found Duce Staley followed by Bulger at the 5.01.
Had some big value picks later on securing the PHI defense and Vanderjagt as a kicker. Heap with the 6.12 wouldn't be my personal pick, but a TE there could have been Clark, Shockey or Crumpler - all gone by his next pick. Ended with 7 possible Top 5 players in their position.
This strategy took the best RB on the board and then hopes for the best on the rest of the position. Would have preferred to see a player like Duckett at the 7.01 to ensure there would be some points if needed but with such strength at other positions and the best RB anyway, he swung for the fence on both Stephen Davis and Travis Henry. Could obviously have some problems with RB2 but with LT, he doesn't need to have a huge stud RB2. I love this team - no position is weak and the only hole is RB2.
Starters: Bulger, Tomlinson, Staley, Holt, C. Johnson, S. Moss, Heap, PHI and Vanderjagt

Plan: RB, RB, WR, TE, WR
Not unlike team #1, the securing of a top RB (Alexander) made him feel freer to hit some value picks later on. Took Jordan at the #2 and then Marvin Harrison. Went after Jason Witten with the 4.11 which was probably much too early - likely he would have been there at his 6.11 pick and he could have had Boldin or Clayton as his WR3 instead of Stallworth.
He was the "Ravens guy" spending the traditional late 6th round pick on the best DEF but that too was much too early as it worked out. NE went second over 3 rounds later. Got a gift in Hasselbeck at the 7.02 which set off the traditional QB run.
Ended with a team somewhat similar to Team #1 but has a lesser QB and WRs to show for getting a better RB2. Still a fairly solid team, but two picks went earlier than needed and had an effect on the other positions without gaining more than he likely gave up. The worst this team will do is solid and there is some decent upside on a few backups. This could end being the most consistent scoring team, whatever that consistent mark ends up being.
Starters: Hasselbeck, Alexander, Jordan, Harrison, R. Williams, Stallworth, Witten, BAL and Wilkins

Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, WR
This approach is a standard and it worked to create a good team. Went with James at the 1.03 and reached Steven Jackson with the 2.10 (made even better with Marshall Faulk at the 8.10). Took the best WR left after the first two teams went on a spree and came away with Javon Walker. Took Barlow as RB3 with the 4.10
Reached Favre with the 7.03 for a solid QB and finding McMichael at the 9.03 gave him a nice tier 2 TE cheaper than any other. Akers at PK offers probably a slight edge at the position and defenses were late and not likely to be a difference maker.
Overall, hard to argue with how this team came together. Has backed up both RB1 and RB2, and backups have some upside with Harrington, Williamson and Caldwell. Only recognized stud is James but this plan produced a solid team. Will need a few players to exceed expectations in order to compete for the top, but should be a lock for at least a good year.
Starters: Favre, James, Jackson, Walker, Boldin, Stokley, McMichael, DET and Akers
Plan Grade: B |
Plan: QB, RB, WR, RB, WR
Sitting in the fourth spot, this team had to decide on whether to take Holmes and his extremes of risk/reward, go for a Tier 2 RB or get Manning. Went with maybe the safest pick in the entire draft with Manning. Snagged Westbrook with the 2.09 and then surprisingly went after Andre Johnson with the 3.04 over Chris Brown or Tatum Bell and all the rookie RBs.
By the time the 4.09 rolled back, just missed Arrington and had to settle for Dunn which even he was fortunate to still be there. Clayton a nice 5.04 pick and then Taylor for RB3 is a feast/famine proposition. Getting Toefield in the 9.04 was a gift not to be relied on getting and makes a huge difference in his RBs.
Overall, like many teams taking the Manning plunge was put at a deficit for RBs which was compounded by passing on them in round 3. In this case, he got away with it but many might not. James is paired with either Dunn or the JAX rushing game of the week. TE, DEF and PK should not be a liability but likely not a big contributor here. This team ended up much better than what the plan would likely produce in other leagues.
Starters: Manning, Westbrook, Dunn, A. Johnson, Clayton, Burress, E. Johnson, TB and Graham

Plan: RB, QB, RB, WR, WR
This plan often works out well - particularly since players like Culpepper will last into the second round. Grabbed Holmes at the 1.05 - how could you not? Then Culpepper with the 2.08 could end up a steal. Reasonably went RB2 and got Chris Brown before mining three straight WR - Burleson, Bennett and Muhammad.
Other than Elam, held off on TE and DEF to get only average help there. Perhaps the most important pick came in the 7.05 when he found Larry Johnson still on the board and locked up the KC rushing game - major 'whew' there and he was stretching how long he could get away with skipping LJ given his likely importance.
Overall, this team could score some serious points in a given week, but may have some big down weeks too if Brown is injured and Bennett and Muhammad fall off their torrid pace from last year (likely of course). Like the backup Duckett and has upside in Gore, Edwards and Teyo Johnson. While the bottom half of the roster won't win many games, the top half just might win a lot. At the 5 spot, this worked out pretty well.
Starters: Culpepper, Holmes, Brown, Burleson, Bennett, Muhammad, Putzier, ATL and Elam.

Plan: RB, WR, RB, RB, WR
The mid-draft spot often allows for nice value picks and that's what this team walked away with. Grabbed McAllister at the 1.06 and then couldn't resist Owens with the 2.07. Still managed to get Bell at the 3.06 and then Arrington with the 4.07 as the final tier 3 RB. Considering he has two starting RB at RB2 and RB3, it was almost like getting Owens in the 3rd or 4th round. The RB values just fell to him perfectly there.
Went with Collins with the 7.06 but that could have been Plummer, Brooks, Palmer who whatever upside QB a drafter wants. Crumpler at the 8.07 was another big value pick. BUF at the 11.06 was yet another huge value pick coming 5 rounds later than BAL and one round after NE.
Some of the player names are not what I would have done, but this team did a great job taking the values as they floated past. While Deuce and Owens may be the only true stars here, there are no real holes anywhere. For a mid-round slot, this value picking worked out very well for the team
Starters: Collins, McAllister, Bell/Arrington, Owens, Coles, Mason, Crumpler, BUF and Janikowski.

Plan: RB, WR, QB, RB, WR
Natural pick of Davis was followed by the "can't resist" of Randy Moss at the 2.06. Rather than go for Bell or a rookie back, also could not resist McNabb for a nice three man start. When the 4.06 rolled back, settled for Michael Bennett over Arrington before all the RBs were gone by next pick.
Liked the value at 7.07 of Clark and while Jimmy Smith at 5.07 was proper, didn't personally like McCardell at the 8.06 though the well was quickly drying by that point anyway. Taking Mewelde Moore at the 6.06 may insure Bennett if Fason doesn't surprise.
Overall, there's no question of value with Davis and Moss but taking McNabb in the 3rd is a hard choice to make and yet to pass by. From this draft slot onward, it starts to hurt more since RB2 will be worse and worse. Has some nice upside picks in Leftwich, Claret and Colbert and yet Buckhalter a nice fallback "worst case" choice at RB. McNabb, Moss and Davis will have to carry this team and actually could. Considering the effect of taking a round 3 RB, the drafter did better than this plan usually allows.
Starter: McNabb, Davis, Bennett, R. Moss, J. Smith, McCardell, Clark, WAS and Vinatieri
Plan Grade: B |
Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, RB
Went with McGahee with the 1.08 - better value than most drafts and then followed him with Barber at the 2.05 who should do no less than that spot and as always - probably more. Horn at the 3.08 beefs up WR1 but Ward at the 4.05 (could have been Burleson or Roy Williams for that matter) meant passing on RB2 with lesser return. Took Foster with the 5.08 before all value was stripped from RB3.
Went with Vick with the 6.05 which was three rounds too late or early depending on whom you ask. Vick could have been Favre, Hasselbeck, Palmer or Collins.
Overall, team has some nice players and should be solid though has no obvious studs in any position. Should be fine at all positions with some upside but generally the plan ended up with a good team that will struggle to be great unless some big surprises happen. This looks like the sort of team most people would not like and yet the drafter would love.
Starters: Vick, McGahee, Barber, Horn, Ward, Moulds, Shockey, CAR and Reed.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, QB
If there is any one plan that would be the safest to follow, it is probably this one - RB, RB, WR, RB, QB. Started with Portis and Rudi Johnson and then dipped into WR for Reggie Wayne. The 4.04 gave him a very nice RB3 in Carnell Williams and then took Green at the 5.09. That was likely early on a QB unless the drafter had a very strong sense about Trent Green and could have taken Driver or Porter there and still likely reached Green. Instead, took Bruce at the 6.04
Nice upside on L.J. Smith though likely not a difference maker. Waited until the end for DEF and PK so no difference makers there as well.
Overall, this is a safe plan but it creates a team likely to be average. There are no players that are considered top 5 in their position but there are no holes either other than maybe grabbing a waiver wire DEF if one surprises. Problem with the way this unfolded is that the team just followed well established runs on all positions with the exception of Green which was probably a little too early.
Starters: Green, Portis, R. Johnson, Wayne, Bruce, Lelie, L.J. Smith, KC and Stover

Plan: RB, RB, TE, WR, RB
Like team #8, went RB-RB to get Lewis and Martin (get it - Lewis and Mart... never mind) but then took Gonzalez at the 3.10 for the best TE on the board. Had to go WR and found Darrell "where's Koren" Jackson before shoring up RB3 with Lee Suggs.
Nice value of Palmer at the 8.03 and PIT should be fine for DEF. Filled WR with nice set of low risk (Chambers) and upside (Rogers and Lee).
Overall, this plan worked better than the one next door with the Gonzo pick and waiting on QB to snag Palmer three rounds later than what Green cost. Should be solid at RB and TE of course, and has upside in QB and WR. Taking Gonzalez likely forced the patter of RB-WR-WR after that but the results were okay and likely a net benefit was still had. This was further boosted with Palmer so late. This team should be good and could surprise.
Starter: Palmer, Lewis, Martin, D. Jackson, Chambers, Lee, Gonzalez, PIT and Nugent

Plan: RB, RB, TE, RB, WR
Went with a similar plan as Team #10. After taking Julius Jones and Ahman Green, saw Gonzalez go right before him and knew he had to take Gates now or pass him by. Grabbed up Gates for a nice start and then still secured Ronnie Brown for RB3. Those are some nice RB's - maybe not top tier but three solid starters. Had to hunt WR's fast and walked away with the straight picks - Porter, Fitzgerald and Rod Smith.
Let PK and DEF wait for the end of the draft so won't likely get much difference makers there - may even need to keep an eye on the waiver wire for both of the positions since it is a lackluster grouping at best.
Waited until the 8.02 to get Brady but had already seen the glut go in the 7th round before it reached him. Backed up Jones with Thomas. Ended up with a lower tier QB, no obvious WR1 (in terms of desired quality) but solid at RB and a great TE. Drafting this far back allowed access to 3 nice RBs in this draft but other than Gates, there is not any player here in the top 10 in his position. That'll make it hard to emerge as a high scoring team each week.
Starters: Brady, J. Jones, Green, Porter, Fitzgerald, R. Smith, Gates, DAL and J. Brown

Plan: RB, RB, RB, WR, WR
Started out with a very nice trio in Kevin Jones, Dillon and Benson - hard to argue that's not nice to have. Reasonably went after WR with another string of three to get Steve Smith, Driver and Kennison then doubled up on QB to get Plummer and Brooks (which starts each week?).
Waited until the 9th for TE to get Wiggins and 10.01 of NE was early as it worked out but at the end - everyone is pretty much is early a value pick or is taken too early.
Overall, like many back-end swing teams, the results built a team that is certainly solid and yet without any standouts in any position really (maybe NE). Ended up with no holes to fill but no stars anywhere. There's nothing wrong with the team but not that much all that right about it other than three decent starting RBs. This plan produces a solid team to be sure but one without obvious difference makers.
Starters: Plummer, K. Jones, Dillon, S. Smith, Driver, Kennison, Wiggins, NE and Longwell
