Draft by Team
A 12 team league looks for studs but has to also keep an eye on positional depth and upside since there are not enough great players to go around. An 8 team league mandates that the starting lineup needs to be as star packed as possible and there is far less need for depth since there's still plenty out on the waiver wire. A 10 team league as this is the midpoint - each team should have star players but a bit of depth is a good thing. The waiver wire is still productive, but no where nearly as good as an 8 man league.

Plan: QB, WR, WR, RB, RB
Went with Manning as the first pick which was a bit of a surprise. 10 man leagues mean you need stars and there is better RB depth, but this plan started out extremely "contrarian". Instead of scooping on RBs with the 2/3 swing, opted instead for tier one WRs of Holt and Harrison. That start looked great but the later results were less sterling because needs and not value were chased.
As it worked out - pretty much got away with it since 16 RBs were taken by his second pick but only four more went in the next two rounds. Selection of Dunn (4.10) could have been Ronnie Brown, Chris Brown, Cadillac or Arrington and it would have more upside and. Benson at the 5.01 was a steal as were all the rookie RBs to follow.
It this mock used reception points, then this plan would have worked out better. Since it doesn't, it still produced a good team with three tier 1 players but only average at RB, TE and DF.
Starters: Manning, Dunn, Benson, Holt, Harrison, Driver, McMichael, Vinatieri, CHI
Plan Grade: B |
Plan: RB, WR, WR, RB, RB
After picking himself off the floor from the Manning pick, started out with Tomlinson and then Owens and still reached Chad Johnson with the 3.02. Wisely shored up RBs with Bell and Ronnie Brown but the 6.09 pick of Bennett took RB4 before any QB or TE - wasn't really necessary.
Hasselbeck at the 8.09 was a great value as was Crumpler with the 9.02. Stover always solid as should be PIT DFense. Nice upside on pretty much every pick and Brooks as QB2 another bargain.
Overall, this is a strong team with firepower at RB and WR and good enough QBs for at least average if not better points. This is a very common plan for a 10 man league and had good results in waiting on QB and getting some value along the way.
Starters: Hasselbeck, Tomlinson, Bell, Owens, C. Johnson, Porter, Crumpler and PIT
Plan Grade: B+ |

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, RB
Here is a very standard approach that begins with Alexander and Martin, then swoops up Javon Walker and Steve Smith before grabbing RB3 in Chris Brown. Found Carson Palmer with the 6.08 for a solid start a bit devoid of stars outside Alexander but one that should produce consistent points.
Ignored kickers and DF until the end and took TE late but still landed Shockey. Will need for those RBs to shine and Palmer to meet expectations because the lower half of the starters were nothing special and could be a liability.
Overall, it is a solid team but appears to lack the starting firepower to compete every week. This plan allowed for a nice RB3 and QB over what a 12 team draft likely would yield but he couldn't know that both teams would go WR-WR before he picked again. Could have had Martin anyway and taken any WR he wanted besides Moss with the 2.08. Alexander is likely his only top 5 player.
Starters: Palmer, Alexander, Martin, Walker, S. Smith, Shockey, Janikowski and DET
Plan Grade: C+ |
Plan: RB, RB, QB, WR, TE
Started out with Edgerrin James and then Rudi Johnson before getting a great value in Culpepper with the 3.04. Found Boldin at the 4.07 for WR1 which a bit weaker than desired but Witten with the 5.04 was appropriate.
WR2 was Chambers but then had to get RB3 Staley. After that, NE was solid but his WR3 - a starter - came with the 9.04 in Rod "wisdom don't make you fast" Smith. Upside with Williamson may compensate for that.
While his WR's are maybe of the shakier in the league, if you have to make up ground in any position - that is the one which is easiest. Has Top 3 players in James, Culpepper, NE, Witten and Akers which makes the starters look much stronger. This could be a monster team IF the receivers step up and make a difference. There's enough on the roster to compete already but this team will be watching the waiver wire for WRs all season long.
Starters: Culpepper, James, R. Johnson, Boldin, Chambers, R. Smith, Witten, Akers and NE

Plan: RB, RB, TE, WR, QB
You have to like how this plan came together in a 10 team league. Started out with McGahee and Barber and then nabbed Gonzalez with the 3.05. That may seem early but for a difference maker like Gonzo, it's a risk worth taking.
Roy Williams likely not the strongest WR1 but Gonzo could have been Horn or Wayne. Considering the net effect, it was still worth doing. Finding Bulger at the 5.05 was a great pick-up.
Overall, Top 5 picks in Gonzo, Bulger, Vanderjagt and solid in RB and WR with no home run hitters but DFinite baserunners. Foster and Shelton nice pairing for RB depth. Like team #4, grabbed value while letting WR wait and will have to tend and nurse the group but has Edwards for some upside depth. If the starting wideouts can just meet last year's production, the team will compete every week.
Starters: Bulger, McGahee, Barber, R. WIlliams, Lelie, J. Smith, Gonzalez, Vanderjagt, CAR
Plan Grade: B+ |
Plan: RB, RB, RB, WR, RB
This plan looks like someone who normally drafted in 12 team leagues couldn't believe the lasting RB value in a 10 man league. Took Holmes and later Ahman Green, then RB3 of Jordan. Finally WR1 was Jackson before once again going RB with the necessary handcuff of Larry Johnson. Starters would have looked stronger with the Jordan pick going for Horn, Wayne or Andre Johnson or even Gates.
Solid at QB with Favre and later Brady but waiting until the 10.05 left him with only Wiggins for a TE1. Left PK and DF until the end for no difference makers there as well.
Overall, this plan ended up with some nice RB depth to be sure, but it came at a big price of delaying other positions - compounded by having to take Larry Johnson. The only top player on the roster is Holmes and he may not last the whole year. The rest of the team is largely made up of players outside the top 10 in their position. This would be a squad that make it hard to compete each week for high score.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, WR
This is a fairly standard approach for a mid-round team - took Portis and then Julius Jones before mining the WRs with Horn, Burleson and Clayton - nice group there. Normally most teams would grab RB3 next but went for top value with BAL (probably a round early) and then Plummer.
Liked the value of Clark as TE1 with the 8.04 and then pulled off a slight coup with Fred Taylor and Toefield with the next two picks. Waited on kickers but took two I personally like a lot.
Ended up with a team that is DFinitely solid enough but his only stud is BAL and that was a little too early. Otherwise merely chased well-established runs though he got good values where he picked. This would likely end up as an average team, maybe a bit better with some players stepping up.
Starters: Plummer, Portis, J. Jones, Horn, Burleson, Clayton, Clark, Brown, BAL
Plan Grade: C+ |
Plan: RB, WR, TE, RB, WR
This team made a very nice use of the #8 slot and took some nice value picks along the way. Went with McAllister and then Randy Moss. Since RB depth lasts longer in a smaller league, grabbed Gates with the 3.08 and still reached Steven Jackson before getting Ward with the 5.08.
Green at the 6.03 was good though not my personal pick (could have been Favre or Palmer) and BUF DFense sets up a difference maker for the team.
Overall, has top WR, TE and DF with solid choices at QB and the rest of the starters. If the team has one Achilles heel it is DFinitely at RB depth - the one area that is hardest to make up ground if needed. I'd like the results if RB3 had been Bennett or Staley or the like and delayed WR3 or QB a round.
Starters: T. Green, McAllister, S. Jackson, R. Moss, Ward, Stokley, Gates, Graham, BUF

Plan: RB, RB, WR, QB, RB
Started out in a traditional way with picks of Domanick Davis and Dillon and then grabbed Wayne as WR1 - so far, so not star-studded. Taking McNabb with the 4.02 was a great value and then went RB3 with Cadillac Williams. And then, in a "I can't ...stop...myself" moment, went RB4 with Arrington. Too bad the league doesn't start 4 RBs instead of the 2 RBs.
Delaying the other positions left WRs of Moulds, Mason and Muhammad like a museum of famous WRs with names starting with "M" and who are old and likely for a downturn. Eric Johnson at TE with the 10.02 also well after runs underway.
Overall, great QB and twice as many good RBs as he needed but the rest of the roster will probably struggle to turn in even average numbers every week. I'm giving this a "C+" grade but we all know that RB4 of Arrington would end up traded to another team for upgrade at WR if not more. He'll be watching team #8 and waiting for one of her RBs to get hurt before offering a "win-win" trade (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
Starters: McNabb, D. Davis, Dillon, Wayne, Moulds, Mason, E. Johnson, Tynes and IND
Plan Grade: C+ |
Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, WR
After the obligatory RB-RB start of Lewis and Kevin Jones, went to Andre Johnson with the 3.10 and then back to grab Westbrook as RB3. Later filled out WRs with Bennett and Coles.
Heap (7.10) and Collins (8.01) are both players that people think will either be huge or duds this year and how the mighty have fallen with Vick as QB2 at the 9.10. That was a nice back-up for Collins just in case he really is Kerry Collins.
Elam was a nice value at the 14.01 and DF will be average at best. Overall, there's not a top 5 player in the bunch and maybe not even a top 10 other than Elam and Heap. This is a riskier roster but has some nice upside depth at WR and QB. This team ended up using the final pick of the round to pretty much just follow what had been already happening. He looked for value within the position but just followed the crowd for the most part. Did like the pairing of Collins and Vick - it was the only move that really made use of a backend swing.
Starters: Collins, Lewis, K. Jones, A. Johnson, Bennett, Coles, Heap, Elam and WAS
