The following mock draft considered a standard performance scoring of 1/10 rush and receive yards, 1/20 passing yards, 2 point conversion are two fantasy points each participant, all touchdowns are six except passing is four. Kickers receive the NFL points from their kicks and defenses have one point sacks and turnovers, two point safeties and six point touchdowns. This scoring also rewards one point per reception.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, TE
This team unfolded in an interesting manner. Took Tomlinson and then Jordan before getting Walker at the 3.01. Missed on Harrison by one pick. Went RB3 with Dunn as a solid backup and then Witten at the 5.01 could be a difference maker.
The RBs and Witten early left him scrambling a bit for WRs and the Collins pick at 7.01 could have been Palmer or Hasselbeck. Took first kicker drafted at the 11.01 with Vanderjagt.
Overall, this is probably going to be a thrilling or very disappointing team. Tomlinson lays the bedrock down but he took swings at the fences with RB2 Jordan, QB Collins and virtually all of his WRs. In all seriousness, this team could be #1 or #12 in the league. It looks like a team that the owner would enjoy seeing if he was right.
Starters: Collins, Tomlinson, Jordan, Walker, Muhammad, Edwards, Witten, Vanderjagt and DAL
Plan Grade: B (but maybe an "A" or a "C" in 2 months) |
Plan: RB, WR, QB, RB, WR
Very nice scoop on the first three picks that netted Alexander, Harrison and Culpepper. That's top tier players in each of the three biggest scoring positions. Went with Staley for RB2 and just missed out on Arrington which would make it look better.
Waited too long on TE and ended up with Wiggins as the 10th one drafted but landed PIT at the 8.11 for a nice value pick. Grabbing Bettis at the 10.11 makes the Staley pick less risky.
Overall, has Suggs as a potential sleeper RB but WR depth is aging and questionable. TE won't be any help either. Hard to dismiss what his first 3 picks could turn in every week but those left him backfilling on most the rest of the squad. Drafting at the #2 slot made him miss out on a strong #2 by waiting until the 4th round. Had he reached even Arrington, this would jump to an "A" plan.
Starters: Culpepper, Alexander, Staley, Harrison, Coles, Kennison, Wiggins, Wilkins and PIT

Plan: RB, RB, QB, WR, WR
This is a very safe approach that almost always has good results. Went with Holmes then Martin before grabbing McNabb. Waiting until the 4.10 left only Boldin then Driver for WRs. But he starts out with two very strong RBs and a top tier QB.
Crumpler should be at least average at TE and Troupe has upside. DEF and PK not likely to be a difference maker but as the lowest scoring positions, probably not a big liability either. Snagged the ever important Larry Johnson too.
Overall, it is a solid team though without major stars other than McNabb and Holmes/LJ. If Holmes/Johnson maintain their potential along with McNabb, team should compete and there is some nice upside picks in Shelton, Rogers and Troupe.
Starters: McNabb, Holmes, Martin, Boldin, Driver, Moulds, Crumpler, Graham and CHI.
Plan Grade: B |
Plan: RB, WR, RB, RB, QB
Most teams that end up with Bulger seem to look good this year for some reason. A good potential QB like him usually goes in the 5th round and allowed some solid picks up until that point with only a minor drop in QB points.
Took James then Holt, followed by Green and Arrington who was needed next door. Heap at the 7.04 a very nice value pick and NE defense should deliver well. WR and TE depth have nice upside.
Overall, this team should compete. Nice QB and RB, Holt a top WR and Heap, Stover and NE solid enough if not above average starters. There's a bit of room to grow in depth and taking Bulger in the 5th made this team much better - instead of an earlier QB he got an extra RB which is always valuable in a 12 man league.
Starters: Bulger, James, Green, Holt, Mason, Lloyd, Heap, Stover and NE.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, WR
Drafting towards the middle of a round makes this plan a fairly standard approach. Took McGahee and Jackson before mining Andre Johnson, Ward and Bennett. Then snagged Trent Green as a great value at the 6.08 pick.
BAL is always a top defense and the 7.05 may have been earlier than desired, but is the normal going price this year. TE Smith is a risk play that may work out but Pollard as a back-up not likely to help much.
Overall, this is a reasonable plan to follow and while personally I would have selected different names for the position in many cases, it did end up with a good squad. It does appear to lack the firepower needed to become a great team. In all cases, team just followed runs on players other than defense.
Starters: Green, McGahee, S Jackson, A Johnson, Ward, Bennett, L.J. Smith, Vinatieri and BAL.
Plan Grade: B- |
Plan: RB, WR, RB, WR, WR
This mid-round team was able to get the obligatory RB in Davis then snag Chad Johnson before filling RB2 with Benson. Then Clayton and Lelie rounded out starting WR before he nabbed Bennett as RB3.
McMichael at the 7.06 was the final TE from tier 2 so reached him just in time but waiting until the 9.06 for QB Brooks could hurt the set of starters. Some definite nice upside on the WR and TE.
Overall, this plan did not produce a team that appears headed for the top with Brooks as QB and following the runs on the other positions. I actually like the way the back-ups look more than the starters. Actually, almost every back-up has upside and could move up into the starting role if needed. The wait on QB looks like it was too long.
Starters: Brooks, D Davis, Benson, C Johnson, M Clayton, Lelie, McMichael, Longwell and BUF.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, RB
Mid-draft, this plan looks more like it will end up with only an average team. Went Lewis then Westbrook (could have been Martin or S Jackson) then took Horn and Burleson for a nice duo at wideout.
Palmer at the 7.07 was a great value with upside but waiting so long for TE only Cooley was available. RB3 of Barlow is a risk but Buckhalter should fill in just in case and Gore on the roster means team owns all of the worst rushing attack in the league (but still a prudent move).
Overall, waited late for TE, PK and DEF and not likely to have any edge there. Ended with a team that has not one player that is considered Top 5 or more in any position. That'll make it harder to compete unless some good surprises happen. Did like the Palmer pick.
Starters: Palmer, Lewis, Westbrook, Horn, Burleson, R Smith, Cooley, J Brown and TB
Plan Grade: C+ |
Plan: WR, RB, RB, WR, WR
Moss as the starting WR1 looks great. Carr as the starting QB does not. Taking Moss left him with Johnson and then Bell for starting RBs and Bell could have been Chris Brown or any non-Benson rookie RB. Roy Williams is a great WR2 and Fitzgerald at the 5.08 could have been Favre, Green, Collins or Palmer and made this team look much stronger.
Clark at the 6.05 was another nice player to take but cost a lot considering what it delayed - particularly since RBs and QBs are weak.
Overall, the splurge for Moss cost a lot in this slot but he will be a difference maker and will need to. The delay on QB just really sticks out as waiting too long on a high scoring position.
Starters: Carr, R Johnson, Bell, R Moss, R Williams, Fitzgerald, Clark, Elam and NYJ.

Plan: RB, WR, TE, RB, WR
Considering this was the 9th pick, it worked out nicely to create some good starters. McAllister was followed by Owens but still reached Carnell Williams even after taking Gonzalez - whew!
Hasselbeck at the 7.09 was a great value pick as was PHI with the 12.04. Strong at WR and TE and at least good at QB and RB. Owens, J Smith and Chambers could prove a very nice trio this season.
Overall, this team is like the inverse of team #6 because here I love the starters and don't like the backups. RB depth is questionable and could leave a major hole if either starter goes down. But you cannot dismiss starting a good QB and RBs along with Owens and Gonzo. This team just needs to stay healthy and could make some noise.
Starters: Hasselbeck, McAllister, C Williams, Owens, J Smith, Chambers, Gonzalez, Kaeding and PHI

Plan: QB, RB, RB, TE, WR
I've come to the conclusion that there are really 4 key players this year. R Moss, Manning, Gonzo and Gates. You spend so much on them that it effects the other slots a lot. When you end up with two of them, it really hurts the other starting positions.
Took Manning at the 1.10 and must have been amazed. Reasonably went with Kevin Jones then Chris Brown at RB and then snagged Gates with the 4.03. Great start with that, but that left only Evans as WR1, Fred Taylor as RB3 and a domino effect on down the line.
Overall, ended up with weak WRs and potentially no RB depth. But Manning and Gates are huge edges. If Brown ever stays healthy and three WRs step up to be at least average, this could be a great team. If Brown gets hurt and/or Gates slumps, this team could struggle. It is fascinating to see what taking two of those four mentioned above does to a roster.
Starters: Manning, K Jones, C Brown, Evans, Porter, Stokley, Gates, Reed and MIN.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, QB
This plan never did take real advantage of the near "swing" picks and it is a safe one that usually builds a solid team. It helps that I really liked the player taken within that position, when they were selected.
Went with Dillon and Barber which should be rock solid and could be as powerful as a Top 3 back mixed with a #18 back. Found Wayne and then Steve Smith before finally getting Favre for another solid pick.
This team took almost no chances but still ended up with just a rock solid squad and some upside on Foster, Moats, Stallworth and J Brown. There are no stars here, but no real duds either. It could be consistency that makes this team competitive. TE is weak but is the lowest scoring position. If you are not going to reach star players, it is hard to argue with at least getting rock solid players like Dillon, Barber, Favre and Wayne. This team may not be #1 in the league, but there's almost no chance it could fall to the bottom.
Starters: Favre, Dillon, Barber, Wayne, S Smith, Houshmandzadeh, E Johnson, Akers, CAR

Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, WR
This team is much like team #11. There are no stars here and limited use of the back-end swing. And yet, the selections seem to have produced a solid overall team.
Portis and J Jones were a nice start and could be very big. Took D Jackson as a weak WR1 but low risk. Ronnie Brown at RB3 shores up a critical area and Bruce is another solid pick. Shockey could be at least an average starter at TE and I did like the double up on Vick and Plummer. He took a late QB but followed it up with a high-risk, high-reward back-up.
This team has no major weakness anywhere and yet no major players. The plan produced another solid team that will find it hard to be the top team and yet probably impossible to be at the bottom. Hard to argue with the RB picture here as well. I don't think this could be an "A" team ever, but it is good all-around.
Starters: Plummer, Portis, J Jones, Jackson, Bruce, Branch, Shockey, Janikowski and ATL.
