Draft by Team
When leagues exceed 12 teams, there is a ohpremium on having starters and depth is both highly coveted and yet more difficult. It pays well to have some mixture of solid, low-risk players and a few risky "upside" players so the roster has room to develop. Once a league goes to 14 or 16 teams (or more), the less valuable the waiver wire becomes since there is simply nothing there for the most part. What your roster is after the draft is going to be pretty similar to what you will have at the end of the season.

Plan: RB, RB, WR, QB, WR
If you want a standard plan for a large league, this is probably it. Started out with Tomlinson and Bell and then grabbed Ward and then Green. The 5.01 pick could have been Staley for a RB3 depth, but starters matter most and he chose Bruce.
Overall, this plan created a solid team. No dogs in any positions and each position has some depth including RB with Duckett as a decent fallback. Solid team with few holes though no real stars outside of Tomlinson.
Starters: T. Green, Tomlinson, Bell, Franks, Ward, Bruce, Mason, Akers, SD
Plan Grade: B+
|
Plan: RB, WR, TE, RB, QB
This was a riskier track to follow but the results were nice. Started with Holmes but secured Larry Johnson with the 7.02 pick. Walker gives him a top WR and Gates locks up the TE position with a star. Went Suggs for RB2 which is weaker than desired but best available. William Green insures the pick slightly but Droughns would have been much better.
Overall, this could be a fun team to run. Upside values in Palmer and Ricky Williams with some solid yet boring wideouts. Getting star points from Holmes and Gates will be huge and the rest of the roster appears solid enough to keep pace.
Starters: Palmer, Holmes, Lee, Gates, Walker, R. Smith, K. Johnson, Carney, IND

Plan: RB, QB, RB, WR, TE
After snagging Alexander, went with McNabb for a top QB and then Benson for RB2. Impressive start and the McNabb pick happened after Tier 1 WR were gone. Hard to pass up.
Overall, ended up with a good team though may struggle to ever see greatness since so many of the players come off career years and will naturally be challenged to just meet last year's numbers. RB depth may be nothing though Shelton was a nice risk pick. There's nothing on the roster that really shines outside of McNabb and Alexander but no holes either.
Starters: McNabb, McNair, Alexander, Benson, Shockey, Muhammad, Kennison, Burress, J. Brown, DAL
Plan Grade: B |
Plan: QB, RB, RB, WR, TE
As the 4th pick, had to decide on either a top RB like James or take the Manning plunge which proved too great. That set back the RB's to be Jordan and Westbrook which could be fine but are also two of the riskier RBs. Buckhalter helps insure Westbrook and Clarett a nice risk pick.
Overall, ended up with a great QB that made his RB's a bit weaker than ideal. Crumpler always a solid TE and WRs should deliver at least average numbers from the veteran starters. Liked the WR depth. PK and DEF no difference makers. As with most teams taking Manning, had to play catchup on RB which delayed stars at other positions. Hard choice to make but a hard one to pass up. In a 14 team league, missing on those RBs could be very painful.
Starters: Manning, Jordan, Westbrook, Crumpler, Bennett, Chambers, Moulds, Kasay, NYJ

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, QB
Drafting 5th, this plan is a natural to follow since it addresses both starting needs and the reality of how players are taken. Went with James and Jackson for the RB slots and then snagged Horn and Driver as WRs. Still managed to scoop up Bulger at the 5.05 - that worked out very well for a 14 team league. Very well.
Ended up with a nice set of starters though personally didn't care for the depth in almost all positions. Good value picks the first six rounds will keep this team in the hunt but the depth is either questionable or pretty risky. A great plan that was followed well.
Starters: Bulger, James, Jackson, Horn, Driver, Rogers, Wiggins, Longwell and BAL
Plan Grade: A- |
Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, RB
This team was similar to #5 but in the 5th round went for a backup RB with Staley since the QB's looked less enticing. Very nice RB crew through RB3. Wayne and Coles offer some punch as well.
Overall, ended up with a solid team with better depth than team #5 but the starters appear less formidable. It is an interesting comparison to the team next door since only one pick away ended up with a different look team even though a similar plan was originally used. This team can weather injuries better than #5 but likely won't score as many points to start the season.

Plan: RB, WR, TE, RB, WR
Interesting plan for a team that tried to make something happen that could break it out of the mid-round "follow the leader" problem. Went with McGahee and then snapped up Harrison and Gonzalez for tier 1 players in WR and TE. Found Dunn with the 4.08 and was actually lucky to get a player that good.
Ended up with Brady at the 6.08 and took NE and Vanderjagt at other top tier players. The effort yielded strength at RB1, WR1, TE, PK and DEF which cannot be discounted though RB2 may be a problem. Have to love the contrarian moves made by the team and has a little upside depth with Fason, Clayton and Terrell. Paid the price of depth and RB2 but assembled a strong team otherwise. It would be a fun squad to manage but will need to cruise waiver wire for RB like all teams.
Starters: Brady, McGahee, Dunn, Harrison, Lelie, Colbert, Gonzalez, Vanderjagt and NE.
Plan Grade: A- |
Plan: RB, RB, RB, TE, WR
Here's a fascinating comparison the team #7. While he went for high value picks at the expense of RB, this team mined the position for K. Jones, Green and Brown - nothing wrong with that crew and likely one of the best RB sets around with something to trade or fall back on. Witten was a nice value pick but TE is one of the lowest scoring positions and might have worked better as a QB.
Overall, this team has a step down in TE, PK and DEF from the #7 team but has far better RBs. This would be more comfortable entering the season and could provide trading material in a 14 team league since having 3 RBs is tough to get. While WR did not start until the 5th round, team took some very high upside players that should produce 3 starters each week if they sort out quickly enough. The starters are not quite as strong than next door, but the depth and upside is better.
Starters: Brees, K. Jones, A. Green, Witten, Fitzgerald, Porter, Edwards, Lindell, MIA

Plan: RB, WR, RB, RB, WR
Interesting start netted Davis and then Holt for a Tier 1 WR. Followed that with Arrington and then Foster for RB3. Pretty risky pick to backup RBs with the often injured player but not all that different than what Team #8 did with Brown.
Overall, I liked the back-to-back picks for QB that should net at least one solid starter if not star and mixture of old veterans and youthful upside gives the team room to grow. Starters would have been stronger with RB3 delayed but this team would make the drafter feel safer heading into the season.
Starters: Plummer, Davis, Arrington, Jolley, Holt, J. Smith, S. Moss, Graham and PIT

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, QB
This plan was the same as team #5 and though it was five spots later, the results were about as good. Started out with Portis and Lewis before taking WRs A. Johnson and Clayton. Favre at the 5.10 always a safe pick for a nice 5 player start.
Took McMichael for a good TE and ended with a team that is very solid though devoid of any certain stars. Very nice depth with upside in Faulk, Leftwich, Teyo Johnson, Mike Williams. This team will need good things to happen in order to compete for the top spot but for drafting at the #10 spot and following all the established runs made good picks in their position.
Starters: Favre, Portis, Lewis, McMichael, Clayton, A. Johnson, Houshmandzadeh, Kaeding, ATL

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, QB
This plan is used for the third time and this deeply shows the strain of following the runs though as a standard, this is probably the overall best one. Went with Dillon and Barber for solid picks and then grabbed S. Smith and Jackson for WR. Netted Hasselbeck as QB. Compare that to team #5 that followed same pattern but got Bulger, James, Jackson, Horn and Driver.
Ended up with BUF as his only tier 1 player but solid picks throughout. Has some upside on a few picks but overall, this plan built a lesser team seven spots later than team #5. BUF was the only pick that stepped out to grab a known difference maker. Solid team but mostly devoid of difference makers.
Starters: Hasselbeck, Dillon, Barber, L.J. Smith, S. Smith, Jackson, Branch, Vinatieri, BUF

Plan: RB,
This would have been a decent team even in a 12 team league. Went with Moss for the best WR, then still managed J. Jones and Cadillac for RB before getting R. WIlliams and TE Clark. Went with Evans for WR3 but that could have been a QB like Plummer, Brady or Brooks.
Ended up soft at QB which could hurt but strong at RB, WR and TE which will help. Other than the softness at QB, this "deviating from the norm" with Moss worked out well and most players have upside as well. Drafting this deeply, it was a nice effort to grab difference makers where he thought he could get away with it but delaying QB until the 7.12 seems to have been a wait too long. Particularly since a QB2 did not come until very late. This is a big league - not much waiver wire QBs out there.
Starters: Pennington, J. Jones, C. Williams, Clark, R. Moss, R. Williams, Evans, Elam, MIN

Plan: QB, WR, RB, RB, RB,
Drafting back at the 13th slot, you have to like what the drafter tried to do here. Went with Culpepper and then Chad Johnson (could have been Holt or Harrison) and then reached Ronnie Brown and Bennett for RB. Snapped up Heap for a top TE and PHI at the 12.02 a great value.
Ended up with a nice set of starters - very nice for the 13th spot and even has Barlow for RB3. WR are weak after Johnson but if there was any position that offered a glimmer of hope on the waiver wire, it is WR. Picking up Ricky Williams or Mewelde Moore to insure RB would have been better but likely not possible. Nice, thoughtful attempt to make a difference at the 13th pick.
Starters: Culpepper, R. Brown, Bennett, Heap, C. Johnson, Stokley, Stallworth, Stover and PHI
Plan Grade: A-
|
Plan: WR, RB, WR, WR, RB,
Not unlike Team #13, tried to do something different by taking Owens and then Rudi Johnson. Then surprisingly mined WR for Boldin and Burleson which left RB2 of Taylor - that's scary. Droughns and Gore are decent upside depth but in the end - could easily end up with a major hole at RB2 all season.
Ended up with lower tier starters for TE, PK and DEF and Collins was a reasonable risk to take at QB. Going WR heavy in a 14 team league means focusing first on the deepest position in the draft - it just delays everything else so much that difference makers are almost impossible to find. This team will find it very hard to compete every week without "lottery" sort of luck.
Starters: Collins, R. Johnson, Taylor, E. Johnson, Owens, Boldin, Burleson, Janikowski and CHI
Plan Grade: C+
