Draft by Team
When leagues exceed 12 teams, there is a premium on having starters and depth is both highly coveted and yet more difficult. It pays well to have some mixture of solid, low-risk players and a few risky "upside" players so the roster has room to develop. Once a league goes to 16 teams, the less valuable the waiver wire becomes since there is simply nothing there for the most part. What your roster is after the draft is going to be pretty similar to what you will have at the end of the season. The bigger the league, the more you want upside players on your roster since drafting known difference makers is very watered down.

Plan: RB, RB, TE, WR, WR
The first pick is always valuable in any draft and in a 16 team league - even more so. Three of the best 33 players plus the very best one! This team made great use of the slot, taking Tomlinson and Arrington and then snatching Gonzalez for a powerful start.
Ended up with weaker QBs but Tomlinson and Arrington could be the best two combo backs in the league plus Buckhalter for insurance. Gonzo is a natural advantage as is the BUF defense. WRs has solid veterans with nice upside on Brown and Taylor. Overall, this is about as good a plan at this slot as you could hope for in a league this large.
Starters: Pennington, Tomlinson, Arrington, J Smith, Muhammad, Givens, Gonzalez, Peterson, BUF
Plan Grade: A
|
Plan: RB, WR, QB, RB, WR
Started with Alexander but waited on RB2 while he went after Walker and McNabb. Those are a nice three man start but the 4.15 netted only Fred Taylor as RB2 and without Toefield who could have been the 5.02 pick that was Porter. In that case, the duo is needed to ensure a starter is had.
Ended up with a great QB, RB1 and WR1 but good chance there is no RB2 with Taylor slow to return and no Toefield. Solid picks in other areas built a good team but the hole in RB will be almost impossible to compensate for and selection of Frerotte does not guarantee a starting QB2. The plan worked to create a good set of starters if Taylor pulls through, but otherwise Alexander and McNabb will have to keep this team afloat.
Starters: McNabb, Alexander, F Taylor, Walker, Porter, Burress, E Johnson, Longwell, DET

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, QB
This is probably the most common plan that almost always builds a solid team. Went with James and Martin before getting Horn and Lelie. Collins with the 5.03 ended a five player run that gave team a solid set of initial starters.
Ended up with Cooley for TE and Vinatieri as kicker always solid. MIA defense is a bit less attractive this season than in recent years. Overall, this plan built what it always does - a solid team. There are no holes and while there are no stars there are no dogs either. RB and WR depth don't appear to have much upside, so not a lot of room to grow.
Starters: Collins, James, Martin, Horn, Lelie, Moulds, Cooley, Vinatieri and MIA
Plan Grade: B |
Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR QB
Same plan as team #3 netted Holmes and Bell before getting Andre Johnson and Coles. Palmer with the 5.04 a nice upside pick. This is virtually the same sort of start as team #3 in quality and position.
Problem here is that he was unable to get Larry Johnson who went with the 4.07. Duckett provides a decent fallback in case though. TE, DF and PK are no difference makers but has an RB3 with some reliable numbers in Duckett and WR depth has a nice mixture of veterans and upside players. The selection of a player with risk like Bell means there is a reasonable chance that Holmes is hurt, Bell is hurt or replaced and only Duckett remains.
Starters: Palmer, Holmes, Bell, Duckett, A Johnson, Coles, Williamson, Putzier, Bryant, DAL

Plan: RB, RB, TE, WR, WR
Started with McGahee and Westbrook like most teams but then grabbed Gates for a big difference at TE. Wisely went for WRs with Bennett and Driver for a very solid start.
Faulk at the 7.05 could be a steal in the sense he should have weekly numbers and Fason has upside. Unlike the two previous teams, at the 3rd he managed to get a top TE instead of jumping the run on WR and did not pay a very big price for it. This is a solid team in a league this large with some depth and upside. May have to decide between Leftwich and Griese each week, but both should manage average numbers at least.
Starters: Leftwich, McGahee, Westbrook, Bennett, Driver, Calico, Gates, J Brown and ATL
Plan Grade: A- |
Plan: RB, RB, QB, TE, WR
This draft slot meshed very well with the plan. After McAllister and Chris Brown, Bulger at the 3.06 was a nice value for a top QB and Clark at the 4.11 carries the same sort of value. Delay on WR left no stars but virtually all wideouts here have upside other than Bruce. Vanderjagt and IND should be better than average as well.
Liked the upside of Shelton and the "weekly something" of Kevin Faulk. There is a good bit of upside in almost every position. This team may need to sort itself out for the first few weeks, but for a large league it is upper tier. Pick of Brown could disappoint with the potential for injury, but there is some fallback here.
Starters: Bulger, McAllister, C Brown, Bruce, Fitzgerald, Engram, Clark, Vanderjagt, IND

Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, QB
Standard RB-RB netted Lewis and Cadillac Williams followed by Reggie Wayne. 4.10 pick of Barlow was a risk of sorts but could prove to be a boon if only for trade material. Hasselbeck at the 5.07 was a need and the mid-draft slot meant he could wait no longer or risk getting very little for QB.
Ended up with a solid team as this plan almost always produces but there are no big stars. There are no known difference makers but there are no holes either. What is nice is that team took upside risk shots at almost every position with players like Barlow, Matt Jones and Heath Miller. The roster has some room to grow and yet has solid picks to start the year.
Starters: Hasselbeck, Lewis, C Williams, Wayne, R Smith, Stallworth, L.J. Smith, Akers and NYG
Plan Grade: B+ |
Plan: RB, RB, WR, QB, TE
This is a good example of the difference in a 16 team league to a 12 team league. This is a solid plan but the results here are noticeably less. Davis and Benson give a great RB start and Burleson is a nice WR1 but not upper tier as happens in smaller leagues. Green always a solid pick but could be Bulger and Crumpler at the 5.08 is just a few players back from what would happen in the smaller league. All good picks and a solid result, just not as flashy.
Overall, this is a solid team. Each position has a top ten player and there are some upside picks and a backup for Davis which happens much less in big leagues as teams constantly steal RBs. The plan builds a solid team that will need some players to step forward to make the final difference.
Starters: T Green, Davis, Benson, Burleson, Kennison, Stokley, Crumpler, Wilkins and MIN

Plan: QB, WR, RB, DF, WR
This is a fascinating team since the owner tried valiantly to make things happen from a very tough drafting spot. Grabbed Manning for an advantage but paid a major price since went with Harrison at the 2.08 and ended up with only Bennett and Droughns as starters.
Overall, has the best QB and DF, a tier 1 WR and there are several upside picks that could grow the roster but the hole in RB could end up glaring. For a position that is typically the most consistent, this weakness means team will have to get very lucky at RB and it just does not seem likely. And in a 16 team league, those free agent RBs are almost impossible to expect to get. The bigger the league, the more the "Manning guy" seems at a disadvantage overall, particularly when waiting for the 41st overall pick to get RB1 and 80th to grab RB2.
Starters: Manning, Bennett, Droughns, Harrison, Evans, Edwards, Kleinsasser, Nugent and BAL
Plan Grade: B- (but A for effort) |
Plan: RB, RB, WR, RB, TE
Started RB with Dillon and Jackson and then took Roy Williams for WR1 before dipping back to get Larry Johnson as RB3. That one play hurt the Holmes team deeply and gives him some big time trade bait with that team but at the expense of other starters.
Overall, his QB situation looks very risky but undeniably upside with Vick and Eli Manning. RBs are very solid and WRs have a nice mixture of top players, older veterans and upside players. Heap should be no less than average and likely better. This is a solid team that needs the QBs to deliver above expectation in order to excel. Oddly enough, this team's future is relying on two players. Vick and whatever RB he decides to trade away and for what in return.
Starters: Vick, Dillon, Jackson, R Williams, Rogers, Toomer, Heap, Janikowski and PHI
Plan Grade: A- (but depends on a trade, otherwise B+) |

Plan: RB, RB, WR, QB, TE
This is probably the safest route to take in a league this large. Started with Rudi Johnson and Jordan and then added Steve Smith and Favre for a big start. Shockey at the 5.11 gives him five solid starters.
Picked up the PIT defense at the 7.11 for a difference maker and ended with a solid team just like this plan typically produces. There are no stars here but solid players at every position and with that. the chance one or more steps up his play and makes this one of the top teams. There is no chance that this ends as one of the lower ranked teams but if no player exceeds expectations, there is probably no chance it will be the top team. Solid and safe with room to pick personal sleepers.
Starters: Favre, R. Johnson, Jordan, S Smith, Chambers, McCareins, Shockey, Hanson and PIT
Plan Grade: B+ |
Plan: RB, WR, RB, WR, TE
This is an interesting team that had about the same results as team 11 though used a different plan. Took Kevin Jones but then snagged Holt at the 2.05 for a tier 1 WR. Dunn at the 3.12 could have been Ronnie Brown but Dunn is likely safer anyway. Added Hines Ward as a great WR2 at the 4.05 and then McMichael gives him an above average tight end.
Ended with a solid team that has better wideouts than many teams without paying too big of a price. RB depth could be nonexistent though Moats a nice upside play. This is a solid team that is perhaps slightly less safe than team 11 but with Holt he has a difference maker that could turn in the big week that wins the game.
Starters: Brady, K Jones, Dunn, Holt, Ward, Colbert, McMichael, Carney and NYJ

Plan: RB, RB, TE, WR, WR
Another very good plan with solid results. Started with Portis and Green for a very nice set of starting RBs and then added Witten for a big difference at TE. Boldin and Mason should be at least average at WR1 and WR2.
Overall, this team took a few chances on the players selected and has room to grow with some upside depth, Warner is a risk but has upside. Gore could be nice with some luck but otherwise there is a hole in RB3. WR depth could work out though most wideouts are likely to decline this year. This is a solid team with a bit of room for growth. Two good RBs will help keep the engine running and Witten should be gold, but the rest of the roster will likely struggle to keep up.
Starters: Warner, Portis, A Green, Boldin, Mason, Houshmandzadeh, Witten, Kimrin and CHI
Plan Grade: B+ |
Plan: QB, WR, RB, RB, RB
in a 16 team league, this draft was wildly different and would likely result in a lesser team for most drafters, In this case, it may work out very well. Started out with Culpepper and Chad Johnson for tier one players back at the 14th pick. Had to mine for RBs and still reached Brown, Foster and Toefield. That is a group with risk since all three could have problems. However, all three could have big seasons and he only need two each week. It was a risk that Culpepper and Johnson made more palatable.
Overall, the roster has some solid players and upside in WR. This team needs Culpepper and Johnson to meet expectations and then get lucky with two of the three RBs. Drafting so deeply, you have to love the attempt to secure top players and it worked out better here than most could expect.
Starters: Culpepper, R Brown, Foster, C Johnson, Branch, S Moss, Wiggins, Elam and TB

Plan: RB, RB, WR, WR, QB
This is a good comparison between this team and #14. While the previous team tried for shrewd moves, this team took the safest plan and worked it to build a team just as good or better. Started with Julius Jones and Barber for the best 1-2 punch in RB in the league and then secured Michael Clayton and Jackson for WR before grabbing Brooks at the 5.15
The difference this team has is the depth. Bettis as RB3 is wonderful plug in for an already strong crew and C Wilson is a nice WR4. TEs are strong with upside Troupe and a steal on Franks at the 11.15. Stover always a solid kicker. McNair at the 10.02 is another nice value pick. This was a solid plan that worked out well, boosted higher with some great value picks for depth.
Starters: Brooks, J Jones, Barber, M Clayton, Jackson, Lloyd, Troupe, Stover and WAS
Plan Grade: A |
Plan: WR, WR, RB, RB, QB
This league was fascinating at the end of the draft. Looking for high value if not high drama, started out with R Moss and Owens for an unreal set of WRs and then locked down Staley and Suggs with Henry at the 6.01 who looks like at least good for some points every game. Haynes backs up Staley as a prudent move.
Later took NE for a difference maker at TE and while the path taken was almost opposite from team 15, this would be an exciting team to run. The RBs may seem weak, but if Suggs hits well and either Staley or Haynes prove reliable each week this could be a top team with solid gold at the least consistent position in the draft. Team 15 took a safer route and made it better, this team took a very risky route and kept it on course. There is more risk here, but more potential firepower as well. I can safely say this is the first time I have seen a WR-WR ploy to start a draft that I actually liked the results but getting the #1 and #2 WR could be huge IF the RBs hold up. At the #16 pick, the risk was worth taking.
