The most important criteria for comparing quarterbacks to their schedule are the talent level and situation of the player more than the challenge he faces. In cases of the extremes, the schedule certainly will have an effect on the numbers he produces. But most telling is how talented the quarterback is and if he plays in an offense that will use the pass more than most.
The EOS is a score of “good games” minus “bad games” but just as important is merely the number of tough match-ups a quarterback will have. The Packers stumble off a horrible 2005 season but are rewarded with one of the best schedules as does the Raiders where Aaron Brooks is put to work with Randy Moss. Matt Hasselbeck should do well when he is not handing off to Shaun Alexander and the 49ers round out the best schedules which is ironic given they possess likely the worst passing game in the NFL.
Chris Simms and Michael Vick get the toughest path to the playoffs though Vick is the one quarterback in the league that can compensate with running the ball. Donovan McNabb shows back up without Terrell Owens and without an easy schedule to go against. He’ll be up against just as challenging a season as will Drew Brees in New Orleans.
Before drafting McNabb, Charlie Frye or Ben Roethlisberger, make sure you can live with a very tough string of games during the fantasy playoff weeks.
