Height - While tall quarterbacks are always desirable, surprisingly a few short guys snuck in like Vick (who mostly runs) and both Favre and Delhomme who are "only" 6'2". But mostly top quarterbacks tend to be 6'4" or 6'5". The findings are consistent with 2005.
Weight - An obvious function of height, most the quarterbacks are not "big bodied" compared to their frame. The average weight here rose 4 pounds from last year but that's insignificant. It is interesting that the heavier quarterbacks here are the pocket passers - Palmer, Manning and Bledsoe. They need the bulk to absorb hits.
Age - Just like 2005, the average age is 30 years. It would be slightly higher but Vick (25) and Eli Manning (24) brought the average down. Safest bet - that stud quarterback is going to be a veteran of at least 6 or 7 years. The very best performers of last year were all under that mark though - a sign of their talent and situation. |

Rookies - The top three quarterbacks taken were all the standard height and weight though Young is slightly heavier than the others and even is a noted runner as well. He is actually taller than either McNabb or Culpepper and a little leaner. The NFL is always in love with tall quarterbacks and the NFL draft almost always has far bigger quarterbacks drafted than what the average starter in the league is. No youngsters from last year's crop either - all are 23 years of age this season. That should help their development more than those who come out younger. |
