Height - As expected, the top tight ends are certainly tall and realize that these are receiving tight ends - not just blocking tight ends that tend to be even bigger. The average of 6'4" is actually shorter than the average of all tight ends. Slightly smaller packages give more speed which is needed for a receiver - not a blocker.
Weight - Big boys compared to the wideout brethren, most top tight ends are over 250 pounds - only McMichael falls below that mark. But then only one tight end was over 261 pounds - Todd Heap. That's a pretty small variation for such big players.
Age/Experience - This is a mild surprise really. The average age of a top tight end was just 25 and they had played only three years. However - this is a function of college producing more receivers from the position and the NFL finally deciding to use them in the passing scheme more. What is truly amazing - only Gonzalez had more than 4 years of experience of the top dozen players last year. |

Rookies - Those youngsters that were in the top 12 last year almost never did anything as rookies. But look at what consistency those drafted tight ends had in height and weight against those who were successful last year. Almost identical. This was helped a bit by the 6'8" Leonard Pope in Arizona but in terms of height and weight - they are all consistent with what works in the NFL.
Notice too that no 21 year olds were drafted last April. These players had at least three years in college before declaring for the draft and all were noted receivers for their colleges. |
