Height: While there is a misperception that receivers need height to reach a pass, the reality is that they just need the talent to get open and catch the ball. The average top wideout last year was just six feet tall and only two players (Burress and Fitzgerald) came in over 6'1". This is down two full inches from 2004 when Muhammad, Owens and Bennett raised the bar.
Weight: You must have decent speed to be a top wideout and that means not carrying a lot of weight. Surprisingly both ARZ receivers are bigger than normal but only five wideouts last year were more than 200 pounds and only one in the top six. Must have speed and that doesn't come from having bulk.
Age/Experience: Last season saw a large number of wideouts come in with less than five years in the NFL and only Galloway, Harrison and Glenn snuck in over the age of 30. There were five in 2004. The reality here is that old receivers have a tendency to have a career year and sneak into the top but they don't do that consistently. Best bet - a wideout between four and six years of experience. |

Rookies: Time was when seemingly every top wideout in the draft was 6'4" but that has fallen to the wayside. Sinorice Moss is a comparative shrimp but none of the players are very big sized this year. We are coming off what it considered to be a pretty weak wideout class with only one taken in the first round so temper any expectations this year from a rookie wideout.
Those top six drafted wideouts are all the right size to become an eventual #1 wideout for a team, they'll just need a couple of years to show that they have the talent to take the job. |
