The following mock draft considered a standard performance
scoring of 1/10 rush and receive yards, 1/20 passing yards, 2 point conversion
are two fantasy points each participant, all touchdowns are six except passing
is four. Kickers receive the NFL points from their kicks and defenses have one
point sacks and turnovers, two point safeties and six point touchdowns.
The draft was conducted on the premise that all players
would be kept from year to year unless cut or traded (dynasty). It shows the
long-term considerations given to draft selections and elevates younger players
while dropping those veterans in their final years.
These experts were hand-selected from knowledgeable members
of The Huddle.

| Picking
in the #1 spot is always tough, but this year there seems to be plenty of
talent waiting on the way back in rounds 2 and 3. Getting Jones at 2.12 was
sweet. Didn’t overstock with rookies, but did take Addai a bit early since I
wanted to lock down a rookie RB quickly before they were picked over. I
pulled in some great young WR talent with A. Johnson, S. Moss, T.J. and
Burleson. Not upper echelon, but all will provide solid production for years.
Quarterbacks
went quicker than expected so I waited, landing Bledsoe in the ninth. Great
value at the 14th QB taken. No long-term value, but upside this
season with the addition of Owens. A few rounds later in the 12th I grabbed my future passer in the Gruden-groomed Simms. Took a stab late on
promising rookie Maurice Stovall, a potential long-term target for Simms. The
always consistent Crumpler in the seventh will keep the TE points coming.
Rookie Klopfenstein has a nice future in St. Louis and only cost me an 18th round pick.b |
My
initial goal was to start out securing a few elite players and then mix in
both solid veterans and upside youngsters to complete and balance the team.
The result exceeded even my own expectations. After locking down Tomlinson
and Randy Moss, I managed a steal on Carson Palmer who may start slowly this
year but in a dynasty format – I should have the #2 best QB for years.Though I
waited a bit on RB’s after Tomlinson, taking Maroney, and Williams were
definite coups for the future and Chris Brown gives me something to get me
started for this year. Witten gave me a rock solid tight end while Scheffler
offers big upside in Denver.Coles and
Rod Smith join Randy Moss for this year and knowing that Smith may be in his
final season, I tabbed Roddy White for potential and Lelie comes as a bargain
given what he could do as a 14th round pick.I really
loved this team and believe it is the best of the field. A definite contender
this year, it is set up for even bigger things in future seasons. |

| With an offense built on Jordan, Moss and Porter, I’m expecting Brooks to put up around
4000 combined passing/rushing yards and 25 combined TDs. He was a big
time value in the 12th! Volek has shown flashes of huge FF
potential which can only be helped by Norm Chow. He will be a solid #2 QB
until Young is ready. Although Droughns isn’t a “wow” pick, he and
Alexander will combine for 3000 total yards and 25 TDs. I’ll stack that sort
of production against any other team here. Holt, Boldin and Driver will put
up 3500 yards and 30 TDs. Clayton is better than some teams #2 or #3 WR, and
he’s my #4. Henderson and Thorpe are simply waiting for Horn and Kennison to
move on. Both Clark and Hilton can be Top 10 TEs and were nice values where
picked.Later in the draft, there were no other real difference makers
at RB or WR. So instead of taking flyers, I took two Top 5 DEFs and PKs
because it would force the other teams to draft lower quality ones. |
I grabbed
Antonio Gates with my 2.09 pick and with Portis made a great start but I went
with Bush and then McAllister. That meant I had the NO running game and the
most exciting RB in Bush but it also meant I ended up without any decent #3
RB which could be a problem. Brady gave me a great QB in the fourth round
though and my WR’s were solid enough I think.I liked
having some youth on this dynasty team with Bush and Sinorice Moss and I have
plenty of veterans for the next couple of years. In my view, I have top QB
and TE, very good RB’s and decent WR’s. The only hole I see is RB depth but
the rest of my team is solid enough for my liking. In
retrospect, this team could have been better off either skipping McAllister
and taking Foster or Dunn for more depth than wrapping up just one team’s
running game. I think you either can take Gates OR you can take a set of
early RB’s like I did but probably not both or it leaves a hole. Still – this
is a pretty solid team. |

| Starting
at the 5th spot meant that I needed to get the best value that I
could as picks went past – it is too long between positions for too much
planning. After taking the requisite RB, tabbed youngster Fitzgerald to set
up my WR’s for years and then went back to RB with Parker as best available.
Chambers followed for a nice 2 WR’s and then I took the dive on Manning in
the 5th round which may have been a little early but I didn’t want
to pass up on perhaps the one QB that is young and has greatest potential. My ploy of
grabbing two TE’s with my 6th and 7th pick maybe wasn’t
the best but Cooley offers a super solid pick and Davis has undeniable
potential in the dynasty format. In this format, I wanted top players and
took a risky shot here but I can always deal away Cooley later if Davis proves to meet his expectations. I already had the backbone of QB, RB and WR that I
wanted. Lloyd
and Curtis give me very nice WR depth with young players that should improve.
Drafting in the middle like this means taking the values where you find them. |
I love
this team (of course). Drafting mid-round means taking a structured approach
and I had intended to start out RB-WR-RB. But after James and Chad Johnson,
Terrell Owens fell to me at the 3.06 pick! I had to take him but that put me
behind in RB’s a bit and I grabbed Gore and White next. Upside on both of
them.Heap gives
me my #3 ranked TE and I wrapped up the Arizona passing game this year and
the future with Warner and Leinart. Chicago defense is tops to me so it means
I have solid QB, solid RB, the best set of WRs in the league, a great TE and
Defense. This is a very balanced team with the chance for posting big weeks.I even like
my WR depth here with Givens and Jennings. This team will be one of the best
ones I am confident and is set up for years with top players and upside value
picks. My favorite picks were LenDale White in the 5th round and
Matt Leinart in the 8th round. I may pay a price for one gamble
when I drafted Frank Gore with my 4th round pick when I passed
over Rueben Droughns but I have White in case Gore does not work out. I think
White takes at least a scoring role in TEN if not the primary back role. |

I am happy with this team. A good mix of solid veterans with quite a few
young players with big upside.
At QB, I have no superstar, but Delhomme has averaged 24 TDs over the last 3
years, and McNair has shown he can be very consistent when healthy. QN won't
win me a lot of games, but I won't lose games because of the position.
At RB, I really like my mix of young guns Ronnie Brown and Chester Taylor,
and my productive veterans in Dunn and Martin. Washington gives me some
insurance on Martin and has good long term upside. I like Taylor in this
scoring system, as he is a good receiver out of the backfield (41 catches in
limited time last season) and he has averaged a little over 4 yards per carry
in his career.
At WR, I have some real good young guys, with productive Steve Smith leading
the way, a recovered and inspired Javon Walker, Joey Galloway coming off a
great season, and long term potential in Mike Williams and Michael Jenkins,
if Vick could ever find a WR.
At
defense, Pittsburgh is solid, and Buffalo brings a recovered Takeo Spikes
back to a unit that was very highly ranked heading into last season. |
One thing
when drafting for a keeper/dynasty league that needs to be remembered is that
you need to pull talent for this year as well as future years. That being
said, I’m not overly fond of this teams chances in the early going. The first
4 rounds went well, but that’s when things started to fall apart. I missed
out on both Lawrence Maroney and Eli Manning, both of which would have
solidified the future of this team. After that
I was always playing catch up. There’s not a lot of depth at RB unless some
folks get hurt. WR core is solid with proven veterans and young talent to
develop but Amani Toomer in the late rounds was clearly a mistake. The
McNabb/L.J. Smith combination is strong with no true #1 receiver in Philly
plus there’s young talent to develop at the QB spot. Defenses can make a
difference in close games and with the addition of Sam Madison and Lavar
Arrington the Giants could well have the best D in the league this year. |

| I
feel this team has a good mix of youth and experience, with Williams and
Jones providing a solid core at RB, if Jones gets used the way he can with
the new regime in Detroit. Ward and Wayne are not spectacular, but solid WR's
year in and year out. Bulger for now, Vick in case he ever gets it, and Campbell should be handed the Washington offense no later than 07'. Foster
is an injury risk but should give this team a few years as the primary in Carolina, and Heath Miller and Holmes blatantly provide a unique Black and Gold look to
this franchise. Middle round (7-9) may hurt a bit, but look out for Reche
Caldwell to step it up this year and be a force in the future. |
I entered this draft with a goal of building a
roster to win immediately and have long-term viability. And with a few
notable exceptions, that objective was met.I was quite pleased with the trio of QB – Matt Hasselbeck,
Drew Brees and Tavaris Jackson as the developmental prospect. RB was an early
priority with three of my first four selections (Jordan, Westbrook, Benson)
used on backs in or entering their prime, the key pick being Cedric Benson of
the Bears. I also am hopeful of the potential of Ron Dayne in the vaunted
Denver RB factory Another error may have occurred with my first WR
selection, taking Detroit's upside wideout Roy Williams over the guaranteed
production ofReggie Wayne. Call me greedy, but I fully expect
Williams to be Top 8 under the pass happy Mike Martz. After two higher
upside youngsters (Deion Branch and Koren Robinson) I was happy to add
veterans Mushin Muhammad and Keenan McCardell. Adding Ravens youngster Mark
Clayton was a nice bonus in the 14th.I made a calculated gamble at tight end by taking two
unproven talents in Kellen Winslow Jr. and Mercedes Lewis and at kicker, I
was happy with Neil Rackers and Jeff Reed. Rackers is highly accurate and
has a warm weather location in Arizona. |

| I really
loved the way this team came together. Managed to scoop three RB’s to start
with and while Barber is not young, he has a few years left and Bell and Davis should provide a solid #2 for me. Culpepper in the 5th seems a
reach in a redraft but in a dynasty league I am not worried about the first
month of this season. I reached Green with my 12th round pick to
offer a very solid (if not great) QB to use until Culpepper is ready and
Smith in the 19th was a steal for the first overall pick last
year.McMichael
offers me a solid TE while Alex Smith is a youngster with promise. Not sure
how I ended up with two Alex Smith’s on my roster, but I am okay with it!The Colts
and Stover will be solid enough for me and my WR’s have a nice blend of
veterans (Jackson, Mason, Bruce) and promising younger players (Stallworth
and Bradley). This team has a nice blend of veteran and up-and-comers with
some very nice value picks in my opinion. I even got the duo of Staley and
Haynes to wrap up the touchdown half of the Pittsburgh running game. |
Figured I
had to take one RB at my first turn but could not pass up on Manning with the
2.01 – maybe the best player in a dynasty format! I went back and double
dipped on RBs with my next pick and while it felt good, I am not as happy
since I missed getting Benson to go with Jones. Shockey gives me a top
playmaker at TE.Since I
waited until round 5 to get a WR, the best I could find was Lee Evans. The
problem with this team is that my WR are all pretty average or worse and
while I took some upside picks there, in retrospect I should not have delayed
WR so long. Maybe the longest tenure of positions and I won’t start out with
any known playmakers. I love having Manning and some nice RBs which is
important since they score the most and are the hardest to find.Overall,
this could have worked better by taking a WR in the fourth round like Darrell
Jackson or especially Reggie Wayne and waiting on my RB3. I will compete this
year okay but I will need my WR to step up. Next year I would be looking for
WR no doubt. |
