| Started: RB, WR, RB, QB, TE
Played it safe with Alexander and then used the swing to pick up Randy Moss and Willie Parker as another safe pick. Tabbed Hasselbeck with the 4.12 pick as another safe play though not the one I would have taken. By round five, the core of the team was created.
Ended up with with a solid team that has some upside in LenDale White (with Chris Brown) and Michael Clayton but overall this is a surprisingly safe team with less upside players and homerun hitters than usually comes at the #1 pick. Moss was a great pick but Parker could have been Gates, Boldin or Harrison and still allowed him to get Thomas Jones on the next turn. This is a solid team and it has no real holes. It will compete well but most of the players will do well enough to hold on to what they did in 2005. With the first pick in the draft, usually you see more than just two top players (Alexander and Moss)
Plan Grade: B+ |
Started: RB, WR, TE, QB, RB
Went with a very nice streak on high value players. Took Larry Johnson, then Holt and Gates for top players in each position. Brady with the 4.11 yet again gives him a top QB and he still reached Thomas Jones with the 5.02 pick. Wisely mined for RB's and grabbed Curtis Martin and then Cedric Benson for the CHI bookend.
Later on went with solid receivers in Glenn, Coles and Jurevicius and took the big name kicker with Rackers. Have to love how this ended up. Has literally the #1 or #2 players for QB, RB, WR, TE and PK. RB depth is fine with CHI backs and Martin which will produce a decent #2 RB at the worst. The only thing I do not like on this team are the defenses but that is not a big deal with all the other firepower. Oddly enough, this pattern has been in almost all the mocks this year - top 3 pick scoops on WR/TE and still ends up with CHI backfield for great value.

The final golden top 3 pick went with Tomlinson, then Owens and Lewis. Went with Gonzo in the 4th and then settled for McNabb in the 5th. This start gives him an incredible team if this was 2004. It still works in 2006, but a slight concern is that Owens, Lewis, Gonzo and McNabb all come off bad seasons. They could all rise back up and this team could be golden but that is a risky bit of optimism.
Started mixing in RB and WR for the next six rounds and while Taylor could surprise, he is yet another player coming off a down year. Waited until the end to take DEF or PK so likely no advantage there either. If McNabb has any problems, will have to rely on Chris Simms. While I loved the first two picks, the rest of the way went with players that almost all had good seasons in the past but have realistic reasons why they may not rise back up to previous form. The names are all big but mostly from the past. Team could do well if all of them rise back up, but that's a tall order.

Started: RB, RB, WR, QB, WR
Pretty standard plan at work here. Grabbed James maybe a little early since he is on a new team and then went with Kevin Jones at the 2.09 which was another pick higher than usually happens. Luckily still managed to end up with Boldin and then went for Carson Palmer and Roy Williams. The Palmer pick is gold if he ends up healthy this year. If not, he passed on Brady, Eli Manning and other good QBs without health issues.
Stole Dominic Rhodes with the 7.04 which nice and has some very nice upside players in Williams, Rhodes, Brown, Davis and Kitna. This is a riskier than usual roster that could flop if Palmer is gimpy, Jones ends up the same and Davis really is just a rookie TE on a horrible offense. For a fourth pick, the risks seems more unneeded that necessary but with some luck could surprise. With some bad luck or even just the expected outputs of most players, this team could struggle just as easily. Risky picks that weren't the risks that I would take personally.

Heading toward the middle rounds, usually the best bet is to look for values to float past and this team made good use of that plan. Started with Portis, then Chad Johnson and when Harrison was still there at the 3.05, he went with the best value. That led to a hole for RB2 that was nicely filled by a 3 RB spree that netted Bush and then both backs for CAR.
Still reached Bledsoe for a decent QB with the 7.05 pick and surprisingly went with two more QB's that may be overkill. Took a big risk relying in Kellen "hey, watch this" Winslow with only Zack Hilton behind him. Overall, does have nice RBs with upside, great WRs that include upside guys in Burleson and Chad jackson and decent enough PK and DEF. This was good, but it would look a lot better with a reliable TE and one less QB traded for shoring up another position. Cannot discount those RB's and WR's though, odd as this draft seems to have come together.
Plan Grade: B+ |
Started: RB, WR, WR, RB, WR
Not unlike team #5, this plan worked out similar. Grabbed Barber and then double scooped on WR's with Fitzgerald and Wayne before going back and tabbing Dillon. That was made much stronger with adding Maroney at the 8.07 pick. Addai is an obvious upside RB depth choice as well.
Finally went with Vick at QB and took Brees for a reasonable back-up. Though he waited on TE, have to love getting Miller and Smith back-to-back. Figure out which one correctly each week and that could work out well. CHI a nice pickup and Vanderjagt a nice name PK in a new spot. Overall, I personally hate the QB's but it could work out well with a healthy Vick. RB's should be solid and with Addai and Maroney who knows? Could be very nice. His WR depth is very suspect but starters of Fitzgerald, Wayne and Horn are plenty. Other than WR depth and a risk at QB, this plan seems to have worked out well. Drafting mid-round is pretty tough.

Started: QB, RB, RB, WR, RB
Drafting mid-round is tough on planning and taking Manning only delays everything else anyway. Went reasonably after RB and got Julius Jones and Bell which could be spectacularly good or bad. Andre Johnson was a weaker WR1 but had no real choice after the Manning pick. Tried to shore up RB with Green though Addai, Williams, Gore and others may have been more prudent to give him upside or at least less risk than a RB returning from a knee injury.
Witten offers a decent choice for starting TE but the rest of the picks are almost all not ones I would have made. Bryant has promise and Elam is always steady but the others have pretty big question marks this year. Overall, this plan did what so often happens when the first pick went to a QB in the mid-round. He tried to play catch up in all the other positions from then on and the results are not as solid looking as desired. Taking a RB with that first pick (Jackson, Cadillac, Johnson, etc.) would have given him more freedom down the road than he ended up having. It is the Manning curse - how can you let him go by but look what happens when you don't.
Plan Grade: B- |
Started: RB, RB, WR, TE, WR
This plan worked out pretty well. Started with Jackson and then McGahee was still available and negated any temptation to dive into WR early. By the 3.08, the WR's had just been drained though and Chambers was the pick (could have been DJax, S. Moss, Ward or Burress for that matter). A little weak at WR1 but Shockey next secures a top TE and Galloway at the 5.08 shored up WR though he comes off a career year and likely will not repeat. He could have been Mason, Branch or Houshmandzadeh and looked better.
Culpepper in the 6th is a big risk but have to love reaching Brooks in the 10th as a fallback. PK and DEF should be fine. Overall, There is risk here with Culpepper but balanced with Brooks. RB depth is very suspect with only Jacobs a certainty to play some when needed (and he only scores TDs). The wideouts are a very solid group even if they were not the ones I would have gone for, there is no doubt that the crew will provide at least 3 decent choices per week. Loved the first two RBs and Shockey but the rest of the team won't likely be difference makers if not end up as a risky pick.

A solid plan for the 9th pick that worked out pretty well. Started with Jordan and then snapped up Steve Smith with the 2.04. Repeated that pattern by taking Taylor with the 3.09 (very nice value) and then Burress at the 4.04. Ended up reaching Eli Manning in the 5th for a solid start with nice stars in Manning and Smith and solid picks in Taylor and Burress.
Missed out on top TE's and settled for McMichael but reached #1 DEF of CAR. Overall, has star players in WR, QB and DEF which at the 9th spot is about the best you can hope for. Did not like his 5 player RB depth since none are certain to have a role other than Barber as a third down back. Liked this team a lot until after the 10th round when the craving for more RBs superceded shoring up other positions. Still have to like the starters of Manning, Jordan, Taylor, S Smith, Burress and Branch. Not sure the roster will grow at all but the starters should turn in good numbers and the ninth pick needs someone to fall to do better than this.
Plan Grade: A- |
Started: RB, RB, WR, RB, WR
This plan had the look of "they can wait". Started strong with Cadillac and Westbrook and then a nice grab in DJax but then grabbed RB3 in McAllister returning from a knee injury and sharing with Bush. That 4.03 pick could have been any QB other than Peyton, any TE other than Gates, Burress or Roy Williams. Seems a tradeoff with questionable value. Reached Mason and Walker which were nice picks and then took Rod Smith to make sure whatever happens in the DEN passing game happens to this team.
Waited until the 8.03 for QB and dipped twice to get Delhomme and then Trent Green. High scoring position so waiting seems to have hurt this team. Did not take a TE until the 11.10 and even then went with Jerramy Stevens who is recovering from surgery and may not even play in week one. This plan started well but the shift to RB again in the 4th round for a backup cascaded back into all the positions and waiting on TE and QB means lesser points than most teams. Taking a third RB early can be prudent but not so much when he is returning from an ACL tear. And ignoring all positions besides RB and WR until the 8th round meant below average players.

Started: RB, RB, WR, RB, WR
With WR's not starting until mid-second round this year, began with Johnson and Droughns and by the 3.11 pick had to settle for S Moss. Opted to get a back-up RB with the 4.02 which like team 10 meant everything else got shoved back. Figure that he could have taken any WR he wanted at the 2.02 and still have reached Dunn with the 4.02 for a much bigger bang for starters. Had to go WR next and landed solid Houshmandzadeh in the 5th.
Cooley at the 6.02 was just another second tier TE and meant that the 7th round could only produce Plummer for a QB. Drafting at the back end swing means either taking some chances and allowing some holes in exchange for star players in other positions or, in this case, literally following every run after the best players are gone and accepting average players at virtually every position. This was exacerbated by taking a third RB with the 4.02 pick and ensured that there would be no stars on this team. That all means ending .500 would probably be due to good management, not bad.

Started: RB, RB, WR, WR, TE
This team is an interesting juxtaposition next to team #11. Also started RB-RB with Brown (major steal in my book) and Davis which meant only Ward and then Driver were left for WR. Solid pair to be sure, though unlikely studs. Reached Crumpler with the 5.12 for another nice pick and then followed that with Bulger for a nice passing game. Still reached Gore/Barlow with the 7/8 swing for a decent backup RB situation and PIT defense should at least be good.
This team too did not make use of swings to walk away with any true stud players but was a safe route that netted some solid players. Notice the difference that happened when he waited on RB3 and was able to lock down better TE and QB than team #11 that put himself behind the eight ball once his 4th round pick went for a back-up player. Also had the best kicker for whatever that may be worth. This was a safe route to take for the 12th pick that made some use of players falling to him and overall, worked out well for the last pick in the first round.
