Draft by Team
Evaluating a ten team draft means looking for playmakers - it is just easier to get them than in a larger league. Depth also becomes a much smaller issue with more players on the waiver wire and in particular when a draft is only 16 rounds such as this one.

| Started: RB, WR, TE, RB, QB
Having the first pick in the draft is always a treat and this plan kept the presents coming. Went with Larry Johnson and on his next swing, snapped up Randy Moss and Antonio Gates for top players in their position. Wisely snapped up Jamal Lewis (could have been Willie Parker) and then took in top QB of Eli Manning. At the end of five picks, he had arguably a player from the top three in four different positions. Now there is a nice start. And... it gets better.
Used even rounds to acquire Coles, Keyshawn and Willford for a solid enough WR crew and added Tatum bell and DeAngelo Williams for RB depth. Reached the best kicker in the 11th round as well. In a ten team league, this team is as stocked as you can hope for with star players in literally every position other than defense. He even managed some RB depth along the way. This is exactly why people hate the guy with the first pick in the draft. Try assembling this in an auction.
Plan Grade: A+ |
Started: RB, WR, RB, WR, TE
Here's a solid plan that makes use of the early picks by taking Alexander and then Fitzgerald with Kevin Jones as RB2 in the 3rd round. Added Andre Johnson for WR2 and then still reached Jeremy Shockey in the 5th round. That makes three top players for RB, WR and TE.
Went with Galloway at the 6.09 which missed Bulger by just one pick. Bledsoe was a prudent move in the 7th round and he picked up LenDale White for an upside backup. While not quite as splashy as team #1, this is a contender with Alexander, Fitzgerald and Shockey leading the way. Nice upside picks for all the WR depth and left DEF and PK for the very end.
There is some room to grow on this roster with upside picks and if Alexander and Fitzgerald hold on to their 2005 production, this will be one of the teams to beat.

Last of the Big 3 picks, Tomlinson landed here and then the team double dipped on WR's with Holt and Boldin. Solid start led to RB2 of Reggie Bush who could have been Lewis or Parker for less upside but less risk. Heap was taken at the 5th spot and then even Bulger came up in the 6th. A nice start with a top RB and two very good WRs and then upside Bush with Bulger.
Picked up McAllister to insure the Bush pick and grabbed CHI for a top defense and Rackers for a great PK. This is yet another top 3 team that used their position for many nice value picks along the way. While I personally did not care for the backups in most all positions, there is no debate that this team is putting a very solid set of starters on the field every week.

Started out with Tiki Barber as that #4 player drafted and then added Terrell Owens for some fireworks during the season. Droughns as RB2 came in the third round and then doubled up on WR with Mason and Horn. Nice enough start for the RB and WR but then went back and secured both Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. Now the RB's are definitely solid but all other positions besides RB and WR have been ignored.
That lead to L.J. Smith for TE and then Delhomme as QB. Other than Owens, this team likely has no players that will be top 5 in their position (okay maybe Barber too) and they took some nice upside picks like Mason, Smith, Watson and Rivers. But in a ten team league, will need those RBs and WRs to really come on strong because nothing else on the roster is likely to be a difference maker. Solid team but delaying the picks for the other four starting spots until the 8th round or later could hold this team back a little on what they could do every week.

Pretty standard plan for a mid-round pick. Went with James and then McGahee for starting RBs and then still reached Harrison and Roy Williams for starting wideouts. Went back for Parker at the 5th and then Walker serves as WR3.
Found McNabb at the 7.05 for a very nice value pick and then once again went back to RB for Curtis Martin. In a league with only 2 starting RB's, used five of the first ten picks to get depth while delaying TE until the 12th round (nice upside on Miller though). This is a solid team and it seemed that the team could not stop picking up RBs thanks to the increased availability in a ten team draft. Four starters (QB, TE, PK and DEF) were not started until the 11th round. Very possible this team has no top 5 players in any position and in a ten team league, that means no difference makers.

Have to like how this ended up. After snapping up Portis at the 1.06, went with Chad Johnson for a top WR and then found Manning at the 3.06 - how could you pass it up? Had to go RB in the 4th and found Julius Jones which was a steal and then still reached Tony Gonzalez with the 5.06. Despite starting mid-draft, still has a top WR, QB and TE, Nice upside on both RBs and could value pick from then on.
Ended up with decent WRs in Branch, Clayton and Stallworth while adding Dunn and even backing up Jones with Marion Barber. Amazingly waited until the 16.05 to get a kicker and still got Akers. I really like the way this came together and the starters are about as good as you could hope for - maybe better. Nice depth and backups too. This was team had some good fortune in players falling to him and used that to his advantage.

Started: RB. RB, WR, QB, WR
Went with Steven Jackson and Westbrook for a solid start and then went with Wayne at the 3.07 - just missing those top tiered wideouts. Taking Brady at the 4.04 was a nice move though early as it worked out since only one other QB was taken before he went again at the 5.07 and grabbed Kennison.
Still reached Witten at the 7.07 and left Taylor as RB3 a very nice find in the 9th. PIT offers a good DEF. Overall, other than Brady there are no stars on this team and almost no top ten players which make it pretty hard to compete in a ten team league that will have many teams with multiple superstars. This plan ended up with a solid team, but not much in the way of firepower that any other team won't have. Solid but will have a tougher time scoring in the upper half each week.

Started: RB, WR, WR, RB, QB
The 8th pick is never anyone's favorite, but this team made pretty good use of the tough spot. Started with Ronnie Brown and then doubled on WR with Steve Smith and Chris Chambers. Found a nice deal on Chester Taylor in the 4th round and then took Palmer as his QB with the 5.08.
Dillon (6th) was joined by Maroney (10th) to ensure that this team has the RBs he needs every week. Waited a bit on TE with Cooley at the 8.03 but liked the backups of Warner, Winslow and Parker and Elam at the 16.03 was a great find. There are no star players considering the league size other than Steve Smith but almost every position has a player that could really step up this year. Ronnie Brown, Palmer (considering his draft spot), Warner, Taylor, Maroney and Winslow could all step up. There is risk here but it is balanced by upside. This is about as much fun of a team as you can see with a #8 pick.

Started: RB RB, WR, WR, QB
This is a very standard approach to any draft and when it happens at the #9 spot, it ends up just chasing runs on positions. Began with Cadillac and Rudi Johnson, then went for Driver and Burress before grabbing Hasselbeck at the 5.09 pick. First four picks produced the 9th and 12th best RBs, and the 11th and 14th best WR. Hasselbeck then Crumpler addressed needs before it became too late but only offered up likely average starters in a ten team league.
Gore and Foster offer nice depth but Mike Anderson seems like a wasted pick to most. This plan picked the right players that were available at that time for those positions, but the overall team seems likely destined for an average season at best. The drafter has no real holes anywhere, but also has no big guns to use. Kind of a standard result from a standard plan.
Plan Grade: B |
Started: RB, RB, WR, WR, RB
Like team #9, this team started out RB-RB-WR-WR and had a similar result in Domanick Davis and Jordan, then Ward and Jackson. Very solid start but a chance that none of the players end up top ten this year. What happened next I actually liked.
Went with Addai and then Rhodes sandwiching Santana Moss. Now he has a solid set of RBs and three very solid WRs. Did not take a QB until the 8th round with Brooks but there's upside there and he also grabbed Green in the 9th to ensure there would be a decent QB every week. CAR as a defense helps too. The team is weak at TE but has last year's #1 PK in Feely which helps a little.
I liked this plan since it started out standard but then was able to make some plays that could help this team compete with the double down on QBs and getting the IND rushing game. He even landed a top DEF and PK.
