Height - This was a year of change. The average height remained around 5'10" but that was balanced out by the tall Steven Jackson and the short Maurice Jones. While there is a standard height, the top runners have never had so much variation.

Weight - The average is 218 again this year and all those light weight college players take notice - not one was less than 203 pounds and Westbrook is always an exception anyway. The very best runners need some bulk to get through attempted tackles but not so much that it affects their speed.

Age/Experience : This is the youngest group of top ten runners for many years. While in many years there was one rookie that made the top ten, 2006 saw both Addai and Jones-Drew land as a top back by the end of the season. What should be interesting to track, there were no top ten backs older than 28 and yet five of them are 28. Unless 1979 was a freakishly good year to give birth to a running back, there is going to be some dropping off coming in the next year or two.

Rookies: This is another down year for running backs since only two are considered likely to have much playing time this year (Peterson and Lynch). Both weigh right around the average for the position though Peterson has more height. Overall, this is a taller group than the top runners in the NFL were last year and only one was less than 5'11 - Garrett Wolfe who is expected to play more of a third down role because he is so light. It is a favorable sign that the runners are bigger since in previous years the draft contained mostly sub-200 pound runners and they mostly had problems with being large enough to take a primary role.
