Height: While there is a misperception that receivers need height to reach a pass, the reality is that they just need the talent to get open and catch the ball. The average top wideout last year was just six feet tall and onlythree players came in over 6'1". This is down two full inches from 2004 when Muhammad, Owens and Bennett raised the bar. You do not have to be tall to excel - you just have to catch lots of balls.
Weight: Speed is critical for a wideout and that is reflected in players averaging only 199 - one of the lowest in years. Once Owens finally retires, the average weight will likely decline more since seven of the top ten were under 200 pounds last year.
Age/Experience: There is no position other than quarterback that takes longer to learn and master than wide receiver and that shows up with an average age of 30 - compare that to running backs who are already registering for AARP when they hit their thirties.

Rookies: The same thing holds true every year. It is the "middle" sized wide outs that become the elite of the position (for the most part) and yet each year the NFL loves the tall guys. Of the first ten wideouts drafted, only two were under 200 pounds and not one was less than 6'0". If Calvin Johnson can meet lofty expectations, he'll be skewing the average way up for height and weight.
