Sizing Up the Quarterbacks

In all positions, size does matter to at least some degree. Obviously talent is critical but without the size to play in the NFL - does it really matter how fast a player is or how well he can pass the ball? The intent of these positional reviews is to arm yourself with the conventional wisdom about fantasy positions and typically what is successful. There are always exceptions to every rule, but it is nice to know the rule in the first place. There is a surprising amount of consistency in the measureables of star players.

# Team Name Ht. Wt. Age Exp.
1 NE Tom Brady 6'4'' 225 31 8
2 DAL Tony Romo 6'2'' 225 28 5
3 NO Drew Brees 6'1'' 209 29 7
4 IND Peyton Manning 6'5'' 230 32 10
5 CLE Derek Anderson 6'6'' 229 25 3
6 GB Brett Favre 6'2'' 222 38 16
7 SEA Matt Hasselbeck 6'4'' 225 33 9
8 PIT Ben Roethlisberger 6'5'' 241 26 4
9 CIN Carson Palmer 6'5'' 230 29 5
10 DET Jon Kitna 6'2'' 220 36 11
    Average Top 10 6'4" 226 31 8

Height - No surprise here - height matters. With the loss of Michael Vick from the top ten, the average height inches up to 6'4" this year which was helped in particular by the 6'6" Derek Anderson. Tony Romo and Drew Brees are slightly shorter than most stud quarterbacks but marginally so. The quarterbacks that are hanging on every season at the top are all 6'4" or more.

Weight - Other than Roethlisberger at 241 pounds and Drew Brees at just 209, every single top quarterback weighed in between 220 and 230 pounds regardless of height. That is a rather consistent weight range to play the position in the NFL.

Age - The average age for a top quarterback has inched upwards thanks in no small part to the now-retired Brett Favre and Jon Kitna who hangs on. But most of the top quarterbacks have been right around 28 to 32 years of age - the "prime time" apparently.

Drafted Team Name Ht. Wt. Age

7.02 GB Matt Flynn 6'3'' 227 23

Rookies: The first three quarterbacks drafted all measure up to the standard for the position - 6'4" or more and around 220 to 230 pounds. There were no quarterbacks drafted at less than 6'2" though Josh Johnson and Colt Brennan come in as relative light weights.
