Height - As expected, the top tight ends are certainly tall and realize that these are receiving tight ends - not just blocking tight ends that tend to be even bigger. The average of 6'4" is actually shorter than the average of all tight ends. Most tight ends are 6'5" or even taller but you need the slightly smaller size to get speed enough to matter as a receiver. Not like they are not already far taller than most any defender. The average height is the same this year as in 2007 and pretty much every year.

Weight - Just like other seasons, there is really not much variation in weight for top tight ends. The average weight is exactly the same from 2007. Surprisingly the two heaviest (Witten and Gates) were the most successful but after those two, all top receiving tight ends came in between 247 and 258 pounds. Small window there.

Age/Experience - Tight ends are like running backs in that they peak around 27 years old with about five years experience. Gonzalez was the only tight end with more than five years experience. Some tight ends start to matter as early as their second year. This is indicative of the gradual change in the NFL to include the tight ends more in the passing scheme as well as the college ranks producing better players in the position. It is notable too that Jeremy Shockey and Todd Heap were injured last year and would have likely increased the age/experience had they been healthy.

This season there are really only four main rookie tight ends of note for 2008 - Keller, Carlson, Davis and posibly Finley. What is notable is that the college ranks are producing more recieving tight ends and they are tending to be smaller. Both Keller and Finley are only 240 pounds - more like a heavy wide receiver. But that translates into speed and those four are all 6'4" or more.
