Sizing Up the Tight Ends

Height: Last season held the biggest change of all - the average height of a top ten wideout was 6'3" - it was only 6'0" in 2007. That was brought about by the return of Randy Moss to the top ten and the progress of youngsters Braylon Edwards, Marques Colston and Brandon Marshall who were no less than 6'3". Marvin Harrison had long been among the shortest and fell way out of the top level last year. By this, it appears that the taller wideouts are the ones that are becoming more successful. None of these players were less than 6'1". None.

Weight: While 2007 had an average of 199 pounds for a top wideout, the bigger players that showed up last year bumped that up a full 16 pounds. No player in the top ten last year was less than 192 pounds (Chad Johnson) and he was the only one under 198 pounds. It was the year of the bigger receiver - speed decreases but receptions don't.

Age/Experience: Not unlike quarterbacks, age and experience is not a bad thing for a wideout. Over half of the top wideouts were over 30 years of age with at least seven seasons played. The safest bet is to take older wideouts - they just hold a notable advantage over the younger players.

Rookies: 2008 was a rare NFL draft since no wideout was drafted prior to the second round. But then ten players went. There was a huge variance in the size of those players though some will end up as special teams players (DeSean Jackson) and there is always a natural split between big possession receivers (Jordy Nelson, James Hardy, Limas Sweed) and the more average sized receivers. Smaller size usually helps as rookies since players can contribute better as a speedy slot receiver but then average or bigger players typically end up as elite wide receivers.
