Welcome to our week 4 edition of IDP INTERACTIVE. In our IDP Forum you will find a thread entitled "IDP INTERACTIVE" pinned to the top where you can submit your questions for consideration. If you question is not chosen to be answered in this column every effort will still be made to answer your question in the IDP Forum.
Now let’s take a look at the question that forum member Footballjoe needs answered this week.
“Who's the better play this week? Carlos Rogers or Shaun Springs vs Cowboys? 2 pts tackle, 1 pt asst tackle and 1.5 pass def. 2 pts int, FR and FF. Thanks”
I am sure that there are many that are saying how bad is Footballjoe’s team if he has to decide between two guys that are probably on 99% of leagues waiver wires. Well, the thing that you need to realize is that Footballjoe (FBJ) is in a 32 team homer based league and he is the Washington Redskins owner. FBJ happens to have one of the top teams in that league and there are many owners that would be happy to start either one of Springs or Rogers let alone having the ability to pick just one of the two. First we will take a look at each player’s background and then we will take a look at some numbers to see if they help make the decision a bit easier.
Shawn Springs has been in the league since 1997. He started his career with the Seahawks who selected him 3rd overall in the 1997 NFL Draft and since 2004 has been a part of the Washington Redskins.
Carlos Rogers has been in the league since 2005 where he was the 9th selection in the 1st round by the Redskins.
Now let’s take a look at some numbers.
Springs has logged 5 or more tackles in 23% of his games played.
Rogers has logged 5 or more tackles in 42% of his games played.
Since 2005, each player has played in two games versus Terrell Owens.
Springs has logged 13 solo tackles and 2 assists versus TO in those two games with TO catching 15 passes for 259 yards.
Rodgers has logged 6 solo tackles and 4 assists versus TO in those two games with TO catching 10 passes for 95 yards.
How Right Cornerbacks (RCB) and Left Cornerbacks (LCB) have performed this year versus the Cowboys..
Rogers plays RCB and Springs plays LCB for the Redskins.
RCB’s have posted 14 solo tackles with 1 assist.
LCB’s have posted 7 solo tackles.
Edge: Rogers (RCB)
The Final Answer!
Before I looked at the numbers I would have suggested that FBJ play Rogers over Springs this week. Now after doing this research I can justify my initial feeling about starting Rogers. Outside of the poor statistical performance last week by RCB Al Harris (1 solo tackle) RCB’s (Sheldon Brown & Brandon McDonald) posted very strong tackle numbers in each of the first two weeks. McDonald logged 5 solo tackles and 4 assists while Brown posted 8 solo tackles. With that said I would not be surprised to see Rogers meet or exceed the 8 solo tackles that Brown posted.
Footballjoe, thank you for taking the time to share your question with us and good luck this week in all of your leagues.
I hope that everyone has enjoyed our first installment with IDP Interactive and I look forward to seeing more questions in the coming weeks. If you have any comments or recommendations on what you would like to see in IDP Interactive you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
