Welcome to our week 7 edition of IDP INTERACTIVE. In our IDP Forum you will find a thread entitled "IDP INTERACTIVE" pinned to the top where you can submit your questions for consideration. If you question is not chosen to be answered in this column every effort will still be made to answer your question in the IDP Forum.
Now let’s take a look at the question that forum member PoorAvatar has this week.
“My team is currently 1 DB short as I scrambled to grab 2 QBs to cover for Romo being out on Sunday.
I am wondering if Allen Rossum is worthy of my open DB roster spot now that he is taking snaps at WR to go along with KR and PR duties?
He doesn't technically play defense any more, but is still eligible at DB in my super-competitive 12-team keeper league (max 3 keepers).
We award 1pt per 30 return yards, 1pt per solo tackle (1/2 point per assist), 3pts per sack, 1pt for pass defended, 4pts for INTs, 2pts for Forced Fumble, and 1pt for Fumble Recovery.
On offense we award 1pt per reception and 1pt per 10 yards rushing/receiving and ALL TDs are 6pts (Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams)
We start a total of 6 D players and have a short bench, so very few D players are kept through their byes.
Other DBs available are in the range of:
Charles Tillman (I just dropped him due to injury and approaching bye)
My full roster is:
QB (1) - Romo, D.Anderson, Garcia
RB (2) - AP, Chris Johnson, J.Stewart, Buckhalter, Pittman, Chester Taylor
WR (3) - Marshall, Wayne, S.Holmes, Engram
TE (1) - Witten
K (1) - Changes every other week
DL (2) - R.Lewis, D.Harris
DB (2) - Josh Morgan
D (2) - Ruud, Posluszny
So, in order to field a full team this week I would also need to decide which player to drop:
Chester Taylor - Might be left with below average options if AP goes down.
Pittman - If he has earned the starting role he is worth holding, but is a major question mark with Young and Torain in the mix.
Buckhalter - Would be a fantastic bye-week fill-in for AP next week if Westbrook is out again, but if Westbrook is healthy he is droppable.
Garcia - I think Garcia is the better start this week, but I could live with only D.Anderson for the next 4-5 weeks after he showed some life on Monday.
Who to pick up and who to drop is the question.
This is actually a very good question. Reason is because it really is a pretty easy answer but what makes it so good is that it shows how fantasy owners can try to think things thru a bit to much. PoorAvatar wasn’t able to provide a link to his league so for player values I am using a league that I am in that is close scoring wise to his league. In my league punt return yards equate out to .75 points/30 yards and in PoorAvatar’s it is 1pt/30 yards. For kickoff return yards, my league awards 1.2pts/30 yards and his 1pt/30 yards. With that said, Allen Rossum ranks as the #83 DB in my league. Rossum has never topped double digits in points scored. Actually, he has only topped 5 points scored twice. While the 49ers could continue to use him in the passing game, expecting him to put up viable catch stats wouldn’t be wise. As a semi comparison, Devin Hester is ranked 40th among WRs in my league and Rossum is no Hester. I should also point out that I don’t expect Hester to be ranked in the top 50 WRs by years end and wouldn’t be surprised if he ranked outside the top 80. Now with all that said let’s take a look at the options available to you.
Charles Tillman? I think we can stop right there. Tillman ranks as the #1 DB/CB in every one of my leagues. He, in my opinion is a no brainer pickup. I know that Tillman has a bye week next week but I would still pick him up in a heartbeat. When next week rolls around I wouldn’t release Tillman instead I would find someone else to drop and pickup during his bye. Normally, I would pull up all sorts of stats to defend my position on Tillman but trust me when I say they are not needed.
Now onto the whom you should drop part of your question. In my opinion, I would look at cutting Garcia and rolling with Derek Anderson this week. Anderson did struggle at the start of the season but he performed very well versus a tough Giants defense on Monday night. Yes, the Redskins are coming off of a tough loss but I still think that Anderson is the better play. As far as Garcia goes you may like his matchup this week but when Griese is ready Gruden will have him back under center. If you really really really are dead set on starting Garcia then you should consider dropping or trading Micahel Pittman. Ryan Torain is practicing again and he is going to get his shot to carry the ball in Denver. If I were you, I would actually look to package Pittman and Engram for a slightly better WR.
The Final Answer!
Grab Charles Tillman the #1 DB in probably close to 100% of all IDP leagues this year. Drop Garcia or Pittman. That is if you can’t work out a deal where you deal Pittman and Engram for a better 4th WR.
This really was an easy question to answer and I hope that it helps to show that you shouldn’t try to over think things as a fantasy owner.
One thing I would like to point out is that I actually am not sure who PoorAvatar’s other DB on his roster is. In his post, he listed Josh Morgan but Morgan is a WR. Depending on who that DB actually is I may recommend picking up Chris Horton too. PoorAvatar feel free to contact me via my email or PM in the huddle forums about “Josh Morgan DB” and I will give you my additional thoughts based on who Josh really is.
PoorAvatar, thank you for taking the time to share your question with us and good luck.
